Jamming with Doug Goodkin.  Jazz Orff - one day Workshop for Music teachers at the San Francisco School on March 5th 2016.

Practicing layered melodic ostinati which Doug called out to us on the various SAB Metallophones, Wood/Marimbas, Xylophones.  No sheet music.  Not sure this was on the original agenda.  But this token Latin mambo sure was fun.  It was pouring rain outside so this was probably the best part of the day, and a nice nod to those Teachers attending who were looking for more acknowledgement of Latin music in mainstream teaching.  (Thank you Doug).

In the morning, the workshop focused on learning songs with swing (Mama Lama) incorporating stomping, clapping and body slapping - yep - body percussion - for lower and middle elementary.  Then the afternoon on the instruments, teaching chord progressions, pentatonic transposition on SAB, on some classic jazz pieces for upper elementary/middle students.   Ended the workshop with videos showcasing the history of jazz, discussing the racist/sexist portrayals of early 20th century jazz/swing performers - starting with black face minstrel shows and how this came about.  The social struggle and legacy of the African, Jewish minorities, as well as sexism (e.g. Big Mama Thornton vs Elvis Presley).  Discussed how children respond to these clips - questions and reactions to anticipate from Students.  The responsibility of Music Teachers to be Teachers of Social Justice.    

For those who were able to do so,  Doug also invited the teachers to perform at a Senior Center at the end of day.  This should have been advertized as as possible extra on the agenda so that those attending could have planned for the extra time.  

All in all, a fun workshop to revisit and practice Orff methodology; and bemoan the Music Budgets of Public vs Independent Schools for instruments.
