Mesh Series 015: Kayla Painter 

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, and what they listen to.

Adopted Bristolian Kayla Painter connects us (Mesh) to sound on this months series, which is also the name of her aptly titled radio show on Giles Petersons' World Wide Fm. Kayla brings us an hour long demonstration of her innovative and experimental palette ranging all the way from mid-paced downtempo bass stompers, bouncy jovial electro to warping melodic IDM productions with also some firm original works from her own projects. Big thanks to Kayla for contributing to the series.

"The cover for this mix was a collaboration between myself and my longstanding visual artist, Jason Baker.  We work closely together on creating a unique audio visual world with my live show, and this carries across to artwork too.  I wanted to reflect the detail in some of the tracks I’ve chosen for this mix in the artwork, which we did by choosing the texture of the landscape.  The artwork is an extension of the visual world we create, which explores lost futures through recontextualising objects and spaces that feel familiar."

An esoteric and effervescent voyage into the sound bank of Niels Orens. A sound designer, composer and artist based in Brussels, Belgium. Driven by technology, Orens is constantly searching for new ways to generate sound. The harmonious cohesion between his acoustic and electronic sounds results in a colourful palette of that invoke a joy for the senses. 

Niels worked closely with Mesh during his tenure as Dolby Atmos mixing assistant with studio String & Tins, London and Mesh on the Unspoken Words project by Max Cooper. Niels has added 2 original tracks featured in this mix to explore, along with other eclectic sounds reaching across the broad electronic spectrum.

“For the artwork of this Mesh Series I wrote an algorithm that displaces all the things I love with noise. Because there are also two tracks of my latest EP ‘Make Null and Void’ in this mix I used the same technique here as I did for the artwork of the EP.

Mesh Mix Series 020: Niels Orens

Electronic innovator Max Cooper steps up to Atomnation with one of his standout remixes.

Cooper is someone who combines his academic background and science PhD with high concept electronic music-making. He has worked with machine learning specialists, often uses video to enhance his music and is someone who brings personal emotion as well as technical skill to his work. It comes on his own Mesh label as well as Fields and most recently in the form of his acclaimed Unspoken Words album back in March.

His take on Awe Kid's 'Eve' is built on breakbeats that float through space. Plunging bass dives down deep as the celestial ambient pads float up top. There is tension in that duality that tugs at you both emotionally and physically as well-crafted synth patterns unfold in their midst.

This is a heady, pensive track that is perfectly suited to those late-night moments on the dance floor and compliments Awe Kid's lush debut LP 'Body Logic' that was released in April this year.

I’ve made a little ambient mix of some of my all time favourite peaceful music.

The mix was originally made for a clinical trial for people undergoing something of a reconstructive therapy. It was designed to repeatedly and slowly transition between relaxed reflection, and stimulation of new thoughts, running for a 2 hrs 30 mins session. You’ll probably hear what I mean in the structure.

It also includes some unreleased music of mine which hasn’t been heard before, alongside many of the most beautiful pieces I could find. I hope you enjoy it.

Max Cooper has carved a unique space as an audio-visual artist with a science PhD & an international reputation as a leading electronic musician. 

His work carries an emotional resonance & sensory immersion, often focusing on humanity’s place in the world.
