superb intro Max! and a great track!..deep sounds..catchy and hypnotic B-)

Le Carousel is Phil Kieran's latest LP, which is great, it was a pleasure to work with this track, and all the better because I decided I was going to do something weird with it! The lovely pads and vocals provided the backbone for my remix, and I just tried to accentuate these with a long ambient build.

The track would probably work better just with this ambient part and no more, but I decided to add on some sort of odd drop at the end, where it goes all hectic with lots of double timed randomised beats. To continue with the unexpected theme I went for another extended build to total distortion, climaxing in nothingness!

It's probably not the easiest track to fit into a set unless you just use the ambient part, but it's always nice to just let go and mess around with a track without worrying about how it might function outside of what you feel you want to do musically at the time.

This is the second track from the Tileyard EP, where I went to a recording studio with some jazz musicians and I played them different tracks which they improvised over. This one was much more of an ambient venture, where I've added lots of reverb and delay to Kathrin's vocal and Quentin's trumpet, to try and blend them into the airy pads and create a feeling of space. 

I added a high end squeal that sounded to me like an army of crickets in a hot country at dusk, hence the name of the track. 

The whole EP is out now on gearbox records on vinyl and digital, with the more beat driven a-side, another ambient experiment, and some sort of abomination of a piece of music called theatre of the absurd.

Sean etienneBio:
Stephan dreht Vinyls schon seit 1995. Im September 2009 begann er sich fürs Produzieren zu interessieren.
Nach 2 Jahren war es endlich soweit.
Er gründete Anfang 2011 das Projekt "Sean Etienne", welches sich hauptsächlich mit allen Styles von House und Techno beschäftigt.
Nur wenige Wochen danach wurde seine erste E.P. auf Beatwave Records / UK veröffentlicht und danach ging es schnell.
Nach einigen Remixen und Radio Broadcast auf der ganzen Welt begann er zusätzlich auch Tracks für "More than Musiker" zu produzieren.

Im November 2011 wagte Stephan einen kompletten Neuanfang und übersiedelte von Österreich nach Deutschland.
"Sean Etienne" hat mittlerweile einen gewissen Status erlangt, vorallem wenn es um die Deep House / Deep Tech House Szene geht.

Als DJ braucht uns Stephan nicht mehr beweisen. Er ein Vollblut-Oldshool DJ, der den Geruch von Vinyls liebt.
Seine Skills und sein Gespühr für die Musik macht ihn einfach unvergleichbar. Seine Sets entwickeln sich zu einem Gesamtkunstwerk und er versteht es auch verschiedenste Styles einer Session unterzubringen, ohne das es jemand merkt :D

Zur Zeit laufen mehrere Produktionen von "Sean Etienne" und zudem auch einige Remixes die in nächster Zeit nach und nach abgeschlossen und vielleicht auch veröffentlicht werden.

Dimitri Vegas, Moguai & Like Mike - Mammoth [Spinnin']

Continuing with the theme of the Movements EP, this one is about movement through fractured space. We used Nick's great operator patch again (the same one as for Ellipse), and Nick came up with this nice riff. I mainly just made lots of strange noises and worked on the drums, automation, arrangement, details and overall feel, trying to keep it pretty simple and too the point - that is a nice flowing club style with plenty of broken reality moments.

This one has a really straight groove, with all the drums quite quantised to a linear grid, while Ellipse uses some of the same elements with a heavy shuffled groove - you can hear the really different club feel that results in the two tracks.


Max Cooper and Nicolas Bougaieff - Fracture (out now)

I've been experimenting recently with some more traditional song type arrangements - more of a quick changing shortened format instead of my usual drawn out style. This is the first of the experiments - although there's also an extended version of this on the same EP, with my usual mixable/home listening balance (soundcloud clip coming tomorrow).

It was a really fun project to work on right the way through. It started with some glitchy beats and a couple of big basslines I was messing around with, with a general idea of a deep but almost overpowering feeling. Kathrin came to my little studio in London and we talked a little about the idea, before she just let go and free-style sang over the loops, using my crappy little test mic I bought for 12 pounds in 2002.

The plan was to lay down some melodic ideas for the vocals, which I could then select, and send back to Kathrin to write lyrics with and re-record properly. But when I ran through everything after I released she'd just nailed it right then and there! All I had to do was layer up some of the multiple instances of her voice, and add my reverbs and widening with some subtle EQing and compression, and it was there - she captured the pure feeling of the music and enhanced it a million times, and I love the free-flowing feeling of it, with its imperfections and half words, and of course, he subconscious vocal of not feeling any more lead to the title and concise concept for the music.

We knew that we had to get a video made to match Kathrin's work, and I was really excited to find out that Henning M. Lederer, who I had been a big fan of for some time, could do the project. We discussed options together and decided to try a "numbed by the capitalist machine" theme, which he has developed into an amazing, detailed story with a twist. I love the result, I hope it works for you too! - The video will be released in a few days, I'll put the link HERE when it's ready!

Max Cooper is an electronic composer, multi-disciplinary artist, music label founder and former scientist who has carved out a unique space in music and visual art.

He holds a PhD in computational biology at the same time as being the first contemporary electronic musician to perform at the ancient Acropolis theatre in Athens and one of the first clutch of musicians to produce in Dolby Atmos.

Cooper has enquired for over 15 years through music, collaborations, and his label Mesh, to explore the intersections between the arts and sciences with installations, performances, immersive experiences, online media, music videos and live events.  Anchored throughout is his emotive approach, connecting how ideas and forms feel, in a manner accessible to us all. 
 
As an artist synonymous with the evolution of club culture, Cooper honed his craft as a DJ with a 10 year residency at legendary Midlands techno event Firefly where he formed a foundational relationship with Architecture Social Club, with whom he still collaborates on extravagant immersive installations.

"I want to encourage the acceptance of electronic music as an art form like any other. Bringing electronic music and abstract audio-visual projects into concert halls, museums and galleries is liberating - the art world opens up doors to communicate in ways that aren’t possible elsewhere."
