About
Throughout his critically acclaimed fifteen-year career, London-based producer Ryan Lee West has reinvented himself with each lauded release. His work is bound, however, by his increasing drive to humanize sound. His music has evolved from his challenging early electronic output to more conceptual and metamorphic sonic theses, such as 2020’s ‘Articulation’ and last year’s ‘Overflow’- an emotional exploration of technological advance’s consequences to human nature. 2022 saw his much-awaited return with his eighth release via Erased Tapes, titled ‘Now Is’.

New Year’s Eve is here and in honour of the occasion, we’re forgoing our characteristically downtempo Sunday Mix for a special weekend instalment of our flagship series, with Max Cooper at the controls. Bookmark this one for whatever you have in store for this evening – or any other occasion, of course.

In his own words, the innovation-driven producer and visual artist opts for a “psychedelic techno adventure” featuring tracks from JakoJako, Barker, Oliver Coates, Rival Consoles, ANNĒ and Venetian Snares. “Lots of melodies and beautiful feelings to get lost in," Cooper begins, "but also lots of unexpected turns and mind-mangling soundworlds, and plenty of genre-hopping so you never quite know what's around the next corner."

Last year we created a remix of Dave Clarke's classic, iconic track 'The Storm' to commemorate his 400th White Noise Radio Show and it was aired exclusively on his celebratory 3 hour special during our live set from the RTE 2fm Studios in Dublin. We were extremely honoured to be a part of this milestone and can only thank Dave for his support for the past few years.

The remix has now been released as part of Rebekah's incredible 'Mind Sets' Compilation on CLR alongside 30 other outstanding tracks from inspirational Producers. We are delighted to be a part of this project, cheers Rebekah!

I love playing music set to visuals. Usually it's set to my video collaborations for my live shows, but this time I got to DJ amongst Christopher Bauder's light installation at Dark Matter in Berlin to create an audio-visual conversation. 

The audience in Berlin is amazing too, being the magnet for electronic music people that it is, and not being one of the historic clubs there with their specific musical identity to integrate with, this was anything goes and just feeding on the energy in the room. And there was a lot of energy in the room, as you can hear in the mix. 

I let loose pretty much…. It’s a club set, how I'm into club sets, at least. With some new unheard things in there and lots of old favourites from over the years.

Vent Tokyo is one of the best sounding rooms I know of. So it was a special experience playing there for 2 nights, right up close with everyone in an intimate space, getting intense with the full body bass experience. Hopefully some of the vibes come through in the recording.

A soothing, blissful and healing yoga / meditation mantra. The lyrics are in the Sanskrit language; it is a chant is known as the 'Shanti Mantra' or the 'Peace Invocation'. Very suitable as the beginning or end of a yoga practice or meditation session to invoke a sense of harmony, peace, and unity among all participants, and featuring a chant of Shanti (Peace) and Ohm (Focus chant). The background music is meditative, peaceful, dreamy, and full of beautiful light -- inviting the listener to a deeper state of mindfulness, light and balance. Vocals performed by Indranil Chowdhury. On this mix, originally appearing on Headphone Commute podcast in May of 2017, we celebrate some of the pioneers of early electronic ambient music, with the help of a long-time contributor, Fingers in the Noise. Here are all of the first explorations into the then unnamed genre, sometimes referred to as avant-garde, new-music, or simply electronic music. Pictured for the cover art of this mix is Laurie Spiegel, an American composer, who, while working in Bell Laboratories in the early 70s, composed with analog synthesizers using interactive software she wrote herself. Some of this music is hard to come by, with the early experiments a bit difficult to digest, so I thank Laurent Bisch for his wonderful selection of tracks for this very special tribute.

Cubic Nomad @ Into The Dark Lands "Machine Age"

I’ve made a little ambient mix of some of my all time favourite peaceful music.

The mix was originally made for a clinical trial for people undergoing something of a reconstructive therapy. It was designed to repeatedly and slowly transition between relaxed reflection, and stimulation of new thoughts, running for a 2 hrs 30 mins session. You’ll probably hear what I mean in the structure.

It also includes some unreleased music of mine which hasn’t been heard before, alongside many of the most beautiful pieces I could find. I hope you enjoy it.

Max Cooper is an electronic composer, multi-disciplinary artist, music label founder and former scientist who has carved out a unique space in music and visual art.

He holds a PhD in computational biology at the same time as being the first contemporary electronic musician to perform at the ancient Acropolis theatre in Athens and one of the first clutch of musicians to produce in Dolby Atmos.

Cooper has enquired for over 15 years through music, collaborations, and his label Mesh, to explore the intersections between the arts and sciences with installations, performances, immersive experiences, online media, music videos and live events.  Anchored throughout is his emotive approach, connecting how ideas and forms feel, in a manner accessible to us all. 
 
As an artist synonymous with the evolution of club culture, Cooper honed his craft as a DJ with a 10 year residency at legendary Midlands techno event Firefly where he formed a foundational relationship with Architecture Social Club, with whom he still collaborates on extravagant immersive installations.

"I want to encourage the acceptance of electronic music as an art form like any other. Bringing electronic music and abstract audio-visual projects into concert halls, museums and galleries is liberating - the art world opens up doors to communicate in ways that aren’t possible elsewhere."
  
Pivoting from computational biology to electronic music might not seem like the most natural career transition, but for Cooper the commonalities are obvious:
 
"In both fields, you're in a sense, free. Free from the limits of living systems, free from the limits of corporeal sound. The only constraints are in your mind."
