Twenty-something Dutch born, Berlin-based producer Pascal Terstappen is better known to the world under the production guise of Applescal. Blurring the lines between Beats, Ambient Electronica & low-key Techno,  Applescal's cinematic sound will take you on a sonic journey through the upper echelons of the dream world.

Having released three albums and a string of singles on his own Atomnation imprint, Cologne based Traum Schallplatten & Italy's Tarvisium Electronique and others he's prolific by nature. With a strong ear for melody he holds the ability to create beautiful textural soundscapes that swirl, stall and plateau for a thoroughly engaging listening experience. His latest work, the five-track 'Mirage' EP is a rough and ready package of oscillating acid Techno, cinematic House with some Eastern flavours. Darker than is previous endeavours it's not dissimilar to the work of Jon Hopkins.

Pointing in the sonic direction of his own label and also Berlin's Project Mooncircle, Hyp 192 is a blend of syncopated beat lullabies and organic sampled sounds that will wash over you like a flood of warm, positive energy. Opening with a transcendental symphony from PMC's Long Arm, the mix is peppered with nostalgia, featuring cuts from Télépopmusik, the badman Deft, Portable Sunsets & there's even a subtle Arcade Fire edit slipped in. Meditative and free-flowing, you will feel as if you have woken from a long and peaceful sleep after listening...

Nils Frahm Boiler Room x Dimensions Opening Concert Live Set

I’ve been pretty obsessed with simple ratios in the forms of chord progressions for as long as I can remember, hence all the long sustained chords in my music - for some reason I find chords even more satisfying in the lower frequencies, maybe we can pick out the ratios more clearly when they’re using slower wave fronts like with bass. I also love melodies and rhythms that combine different loop lengths so that interesting syncopation effects arise as a result of the ratios between the loop lengths. A lot of my favourite new tracks recently have used these types of techniques, so I decided to base a mix around them - Semiosis.

Semiosis is a process by which we create meaning from comparison. If I tell you a made up word that doesn’t relate to anything you know, you can get little meaning from it - meaning comes from what something isn’t, how it relates to other things you know. Music works in exactly this way, with us comparing meaningless wave frequencies to find feeling in how one value relates to another - a ratio.

Whether or not you like it, your subconscious mind is a massive maths geek, and it gets really excited when it finds a 1:3:5 ratio in the stream of air pressure information being received by your ears.  Ratio has the capacity to make us feel and make us dance. But it all happens without us being aware of it. 

When you listen to long drawn out chords and syncopating rhythms however, you can’t really get the full feeling from just a quick dip in, I find that it needs time for the ratios to wash over and sink in. The more time you give to it the more beauty you can find hidden in there. So the mix is very much of this long form, it doesn’t jump from one extreme to another like some of my other mixes, and needs to have some time to develop.

He also talks about his relationship with Bad Panda Records, and what he has learnt during the album writing process. IA MIX 164 Indian Wells

I've been listening to Essential mixes since I first started getting into clubs and electronic music, so it was a shock, and exciting for me, to get the offer to make one myself. The two hour format really allows some time to explore ideas musically as well.

So bringing everything together, I decided to try and make it an exploration of everything that has made me so obsessed with electronic music for the last 20 years, with some of my favourite records from the mid 90's, unreleased material from my favourite artists like Nils Frahm, Lusine, Tim Hecker and Rob Clouth, and a range of genres from ambient to 90 bpm electronica, house and techno, all the way up to 170bpm glitched jungle mayhem - I thought, why not have some fun with it!?

So it's certainly not a normal club mix, it's just what I think is the best music out there, without worrying about what genre or box any particular track fits into or how things should be done "properly". I wanted to leave some sections quite ambient as well, to give breathing space between the peaks, so I'm happy to be able to post this new version up, minus the broadcast talking and idents.

Max Cooper is an electronic composer, multi-disciplinary artist, music label founder and former scientist who has carved out a unique space in music and visual art.

He holds a PhD in computational biology at the same time as being the first contemporary electronic musician to perform at the ancient Acropolis theatre in Athens and one of the first clutch of musicians to produce in Dolby Atmos.

Cooper has enquired for over 15 years through music, collaborations, and his label Mesh, to explore the intersections between the arts and sciences with installations, performances, immersive experiences, online media, music videos and live events.  Anchored throughout is his emotive approach, connecting how ideas and forms feel, in a manner accessible to us all. 
 
As an artist synonymous with the evolution of club culture, Cooper honed his craft as a DJ with a 10 year residency at legendary Midlands techno event Firefly where he formed a foundational relationship with Architecture Social Club, with whom he still collaborates on extravagant immersive installations.

"I want to encourage the acceptance of electronic music as an art form like any other. Bringing electronic music and abstract audio-visual projects into concert halls, museums and galleries is liberating - the art world opens up doors to communicate in ways that aren’t possible elsewhere."
  
Pivoting from computational biology to electronic music might not seem like the most natural career transition, but for Cooper the commonalities are obvious:
 
"In both fields, you're in a sense, free. Free from the limits of living systems, free from the limits of corporeal sound. The only constraints are in your mind."
