Taipei-born DJ Kaytseng shares a psychedelic podcast for us this week. Wavey melodies, sleek drums and high-speed trance rhythms pulsate throughout, evoking a mesmerising aural experience. Based in Naarm, Kay has soundtracked local spots Colour, 24 Moons, Bourke Street Courtyard and many more, supporting artists like Mama Snake, DJ Spit and Schacke along the way. Previous mixes for CRUDE and Boiler Room have allowed her to reach a European audience too. While Kaytseng’s sound is typically fast and trippy, she peppers her mixes with soft vocals and pearlescent soundscapes, striking the perfect balance between brutal and hypnotizing moods. Watch out for Kaytseng this year—we’re sure you’ll hear much more from this talented selector.

We are delighted to share our first live hardware set for the series. E-FILE is a close friend of the collective who has shared original live sets at our first open air events in Mulubinba/Newcastle aswell as his well received "Cycles" on our premiere compilation SELFNESS: VOL001.
As one of our favourite artists he has developed a distinct sound signature over recent years which is an indication of a lot of hard work and dedication. 

The live set incorporates an obsession with clean sound design and enjoyment of interlinked music genres. The  set explores the use of break beats, melodic synth work and live vocals to offer alternative enjoyment of his understanding of trance music. 

E-FILE co runs the Eora/Sydney https://soundcloud.com/impetustec label with Cobber. Having recently released their debut VA “Limbic Sequence”, the crew are looking to build on this debut to bring more fast gritty grooves to our local music scene. 

 The 19th of May presents a chance to catch an all originals E-FILE live set at the launch of “Bounce” from “THE LAND OF RAH” presented by Lovejoy at Shades Bar. E-FILE will feature on this line up alongside talented Eora based artist gi.

For the next mix we have close friend of the label, White Fluff an operator out of Meanjin/ Brisbane who joins the series for an hour and a half of mind trip. 

White Fluff has had a super productive year with the Bandcamp self release of “No Repto”, a well received 6 track EP spanning glitchy psy trance to experimental half time. 

For White Fluff, the experiences had at Psy Trance parties as a teenager continue to inspire his approach to contemporary trance productions and Dj sets. After coming back from a recent debut set in Eora/ Sydney for Spectre. White Fluff is looking to further experiment with sound design and engage different tempos as he crafts his personal sound.

Premiere: Jörmungandr - Root Mender [PS017]

Peachlyfe is a hydra-sonic electronic musician thats hook & seduced the Copenhagen fast-paced techno scene, claiming their seat along with the Fast Forward Agency. Peachlyfe’s productions and live sets rebelliously weave across genres, trippy melodies cut with heavy slaps while slithering whispers in your ears owing the dismantlement of the ‘cistem’. Their previous EPs “All Tits are Real, All Money is Fake, All Hail Satan”, “Swamplyfe”, and “Against All Reason” are odes to that anarchic playfulness, a marvellous feat in blending rave-rush joy and queer defiance.Their recent EP “Boī\_(ツ)_/ ̄” serves equal parts juicy techno and epic trance with that Peachlyfe trademark:The shenanigans are continuously brought to yet another level. 

This Chalkboard TT mix is a live recording from Petra’s set when we had the pleasure to host them at “sideways” earlier this year (02.09.2023). It was a treat to be able to show Petra our little city and it has been special to have stayed connected since. Enjoy this 70 minutes of uniformed hard hitting kicks from one of the driving forces in today’s techno scene!

For our final release of the year we are thrilled to share this conceptual EP ‘An-Xileel’ from two aliases’ of Naarm based artist Daniel Jakobsson; Eastern Distributor and Jörmungandr.

The world building for this release came through a necessity for escapism for Jakobsson. Across this release, he takes you on a vivid journey through Black Marsh, a territory that sprawls through tranquil yet wild swamplands into densely breathtaking rainforests.

Within this captivating landscape resides the Argonians, reptilian humanoid creatures who call Black Marsh home. The EP delves into the world of the An-Xileel, a mysterious anti-imperialist political faction among the Argonians. With sharp, obsidian eyes gleaming with ancient intelligence, they are dedicated to purging the former colonial influence and restoring the homeland to its pre-foreign rule state.

Opening the release, 'Sap Speaker' by Eastern Distributor sets the tone with a frenzied and energetic vibe, establishing the EP's atmosphere. Throughout the track, the crisp percussion maintains a sharp presence amidst the focused and intentionally immersive synthesis. The inspiration for this track stemmed from the swamp environments.

Moving on to Dam Dweller, the composition features cold, dark percussion alongside psychedelic sweeps that plunge the listener into a profound low-end groove. This groove undergoes a gradual evolution into a 4/4 eruption, accompanied by the delicate touch of gentle pads and strings. The inspiration behind this track draws from the water and cave systems of Black Marsh.

Dam Dweller gracefully concludes, paving the way for Sand Shaper, a mellow yet robust track. With a focus on organic instruments, a gliding bass, and bowed strings, Sand Shaper captivates with hypnotising atmosphere and polyrhythmic percussion. The inspiration for this piece lies in the territory's sandy shores.

Root Mender brings the tempo back up, radiating positivity, vitality, and life. Thick sub-bass tones resonate through the body, and purposeful drum programming slice through the ever engulfing ethereal pads. An amphibious croak pulses beneath heavy kicks, accompanied by soothing vocals. Strings and acid basslines elevate the track, marking it as the EP's highlight. The inspiration for Root Mender is drawn from the tree homes of the Argonians.

Concluding the EP, Tree Minder adopts an introspective tone. Minimalist percussion and sharp automation contrast with angelic pads and echoing sounds. Flutes, bells, and bows collectively paint the spirit of an alien world, mirroring the hope brought by the An Xileel to the Argonian people.

Headcast No. 26 is delivered from Wroclaw, Poland by our good friend DJ Duch.
Also known as DJ Ryan R, we already invited him as a guest at Fusion-Festival’s Seebühne in 2019, when we curated parts of the music programme. As DJ Duch he discovers and explores the little-known and hard to come by music of the 1990s from countries of the Eastern Bloc. This mix is a brief introduction to the sound of 1990s Eastern European club music. A very refreshing - and most probably impossible-to-find - selection of Deep House, Electro, Breakbeat, and Technoish gems, most of them from Poland, Russia as well as Yugoslavia. DJ Duch describes his enthusiasm for this distinctive music from a unique period of cultural, social and not at least economical transformations as following: „The thing that makes this music unique and interesting in my opinion is the mixture of lack of skills and experiences (many artists in Eastern Europe knew club music just from radio stations and had never been in „proper” club) with great motivation and hope to make it big in the West (which in most cases sadly didn’t happen). After many years of oppressive regime (also concerning art and culture) eastern part of Europe witnessed true explosion of creativity - wild, sincere and with high hopes.“
