Ahead of this weekend’s Bassiani booking, Berghain resident Fadi Mohem delivers a masterful blend of large scale rhythms for Bassiani Podcast 247. Raised in the leafy suburb of Spandau, the native Berliner always had the very best of nightlife within easy reach: exposure to drum ‘n’ bass, Detroit, the dubby incarnations of Basic Channel and IDM meting out references for a personal distillation of sound that saw him go from techno acolyte and sound engineering student to folk mainstay in just a few years. A stint at cult vinyl purveyor Hard Wax and the tutelage and encouragement of Ben Klock (they met in 2016) have permeated his work even further. From his alma mater to Dekmantel and beyond, his is a lexicon comprised of rhythmic loops and heavily stylised snarls that ripple, echo and penetrate the body; a catalyst for mental and physical experience that’s forward-looking and deeply intuitive. This latest one’s a 92 minute compilation of Mohem’s favourite sounds, an avatar for his high-concept sonic palette, assembly line beats from this nonpareil Berlin selector.

For some time now, Irish DJ and producer Sunil Sharpe has been honing (no pun intended) his skills as a formidable floor destroyer, putting out a string of memorable burners for the likes of Works The Long Nights, BPitch, MORD or his own imprint, Earwiggle. Delivering his implacable two-hour missive through blends of breaks-laden rhythms, frenzied machine talk and murky, weatherbeaten ambiences, Sunil Sharpe boggles the mind and knocks senses askew, not letting loose on his astonished prey - understand the odd raver bracing themselves for the blast incoming. Unless they’ve already bashed their skull in the system’s facade and got to taste the visceral high of sound flowing through their body. You think it’s an image, but the man is a literalist.

Berghain 07 | Function

Raised in Bristol, JackWallis earliest musical influences were shaped by
dubstep, punk, and UK techno, shown by his early releases on Darwin's label SPE:C.

Following his move to Berlin in 2017, he and The Lady Machine established Unterwegs,
an imprint to release music from like minded talents, including Decka's
pressurised, raw, and driving techno productions.

Since then, he has released on top-tier labels such as KEY Vinyl, AMTK+, TarHallow
and Reclaim Your City.

Pushing the boundaries of modern-day techno, the quality of his music is consistently
recognised with multiples old-out releases and a growing portfolio of remix
commissions for esteemed artists such as Dubfire. 

He now runs a second label with artist Roseen- Frameworks- where the duo released their debut album "Imaginary Places" in 2023.

His fervent love for analog in the studio translates behind decks. DJ'ing only with
vinyl since the beginning of his career, Decka’s sets not only highlight his clear-cut
technique but a refilled with moments of suspense and tension amidst high-octane
energy, drawing on his extensive knowledge of techno, never limiting him self to just one style.

CLOSERcast #097 - NASTIA REIGEL

I warmed things up as I thought Johnny would have wanted me to. The first 15 minutes were ambient sounds which I mixed into Cherushii's deep version of Manic with Kara Marie. Nick got to F8 and plugged in the recorder around the second half of my tribute set. This was made using a pioneer mixer, 2 technic 1200s and 2 CDJ 2000s.

I had so many emotions rushing through me during this special moment. There was a red light next to the booth I would turn on everytime one of Nackt or Cherushii's tracks were being played. I'm glad I was able to honor my friends through this medium and it sounds like F8 might now keep this light in their DJ booth forever. 

You keep thinking this kind of thing will get easier with time, but it doesn't. The more I realize what the world lost, the more it hurts. I can only honor my lost friends by helping them live on through their sound. Much love to everyone, it's important we unite and support each other, and now more than ever.

All three are founding members of Outpost, "a party created as a platform for undervalued musicians/people to gather, play music, and share ideas freely and safely".

This mix by Berghain / Panorama Bar resident @Ben-Klock first aired on August 3 as part of @OstgutTon-official's takeover of @RinseFM and @Rinse-France. For this special simulcast on both stations in Paris and London, Ostgut Ton artists were asked to showcase a different musical side of theirs.

Ben Klock: “This mix is a journey through different tempos and genres of electronic music and more. I wanted to create a smooth trip that is basically an ambient mix, but includes also uptempo tunes, so the vibe is more in the music than in any specific bpm. Basically a mix of music that I would like to listen to at a chill afterparty with a hand full of friends and a beautiful sunrise in front of us.”
