Hymns and Carols
A Fantasy on Christmas Carols
The Christmas fantasy Hymns and Carols is based on a number of relatively unknown carols. Alongside three English Christmas carols, this composition includes a fragment of a Gregorian chant, a Marian antiphon (Salve Regina), and a Russian Carol. A characteristic feature of this last song is the recurring motif that symbolises the bells chiming to welcome in the New Year. The English carols represent the more lyrical part of this fantasy. The piece has a majestic ending, which returns to the aforementioned Salve Regina, a hymn to the Virgin Mary.

ABOUT LIVING ROOM SONGS:

Icelandic contemporary composer Ólafur Arnalds created and released a new song, one per day for one for one whole week during the month of October 2011. The songs were recorded and filmed live in the living room of his Reykjavik apartment and released instantly for free as streamed videos and mp3 downloads.

Living Room Songs will now also be released on CD, Vinyl, Ltd. Special Edition CD &amp; DVD and as High Quality Downloads on December 5th via Erased Tapes.


Following in the spirit of Ólafur Arnalds’ critically acclaimed Found Songs (2009) now comes Living Room Songs. This time Ólafur takes the idea further and invites the audience into the comfort of his living room, where the songs were recorded live and the whole process filmed. The songs were instantly released in form of a free mp3 download and video stream- straight from Ólafur's Reykjavik apartment.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: ‘One night I was just playing my piano here in this apartment and I was writing a new song and I didn't have my phone on me which I usually use to record ideas. So I actually took out my MacBook and I didn't want to open like a proper recording program, so I just opened Photo Booth and recorded a video of myself playing the song so that I would remember the song. And I really liked the atmosphere of that video and that's when I thought I should do a series of songs in my living room...’             – Ólafur Arnalds


Born in the suburban Icelandic town of Mosfellsbær, a few kilometers outside of Reykjavík, the 24-year old composer has always enjoyed pushing boundaries with both his studio work and his live-shows. Through relentless touring and determination this young artist has steadily gained recognition worldwide since his 2007 debut Eulogy for Evolution. Ólafur Arnalds’ second full-length album ...and they have escaped the weight of darkness, continues his mission to lure an indie-generation of pop and rock fans into an emotive world of beguiling electronic chamber music and delicate classical arrangements. !K7 is proud to announce the launch of a new imprint, 7K!, dedicated to cutting edge neo-classical musicians and composers. The first 7K! release is a double-sided single from Italian composer, arranger & multi-instrumentalist Luca D'Alberto.

Luca's music is visceral with a life beyond itself, cinematic yet personal. With his innovative approach to how far a traditional instrument can take you, he makes intensely real music, pain-stakingly crafted to move you to another place: an antidote to the noise of modern life and a rare chance for reflection.

A full-length album from Luca D'Alberto is due in 2017 on 7K! Titled 'Endless,' the album was played entirely by D’Alberto and engineered by Martyn Heyne with additional production by Henrik Schwarz, shaking his classical training into new forms. 

To celebrate the beginnings of the new 7K! brand, 7K! has teamed up with Berlin radio station Flux FM who will be launching the new radio channel Neo FM on January 27th. Luca D'Alberto will play his first live show, complete with 4 piece ensemble, live at the event, which will be streamed worldwide from Silent Green in Berlin. Luca D'Alberto's debut album Endless, produced by Martyn Heyne and Henrik Schwarz, is due for release on 7K! in 2017.

The musical studio is a broad-spectrum cognitive pathway that through interpretations, new readings, audio manipulations, original and recomposed tracks, investigates the expressive canons of the seventeenth century.
This recomposed is the final act of the performance.

Max Richter trained in composition and piano at Edinburgh University, at the Royal Academy of Music, and with Luciano Berio in Florence.

On completing his studies, Max co-founded the iconoclastic classical ensemble Piano Circus, where he stayed for ten years, commissioning and performing works by Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Julia Wolfe and Steve Reich.

In the late 90s he worked with a number of electronic artists, notably Future Sound of London on their album 'Dead Cities". He subsequently collaborated with FSOL over a period of two years, also contributing to the albums "The Isness" and "The Peppermint Tree and Seeds of Superconsciousness". Max also collaborated with Mercury Prize winner Roni Size, on "In the Mode".

In June 2002, Max released his debut solo album, "memoryhouse", recorded with The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. This was followed in March 2004 by FatCat's release of "The Blue Notebooks", with featured readings by Tilda Swinton.

In 2005 Max produced Vashti Bunyan's outstanding comeback album "Lookaftering".

2006 saw the release of "Songs From Before" based on Haruki Murakami texts read by Robert Wyatt. That same year, Max began performing "from The Art of Mirrors", an evolving score to previously unseen Super 8mm films of Derek Jarman.

Max's more recent work continues to stretch the notions of what Classical music is.  ‘24 Postcards In Full Colour’, released in August 2008, is an experimental work made up of 24 composed ringtones.

Max works widely in film music, installation and the theatre, most recently on INFRA, made with Wayne MacGregor and Julian Opie for The Royal Ballet, London. The Ballet was the subject of a BBC 'making of' documentary.

Max was named 2008 European Composer Of The Year for his score to Ari Folman's Waltz With Bashir, for which he was also nominated for the Prix France Musique.
