I was inspired to create this after hearing how Subjoi manipulated the "No More" sample by Ruff Endz on his track "VIP".

Max's Monday Mini Mix - HOUSE 001

Diurnal (2020), Max Ellis (b.2001)

“Diurnal” (referring to daily reoccurring patterns) is a music concrete piece exploring sound triggers commonly heard throughout the day, around and within a home. The piece consists exclusively of organic sound recordings to give a natural ‘vibe’ to the piece, avoiding any use of e.g. sampling and sound libraries. The piece moves in 3 stages:

	Morning – Alarm tones and sounds of cereal being made are given to create a soundscape of waking up to breakfast. Stretched and slowed moments with added reverb allow for smooth transitions into the Afternoon stage, with a calming scene at the works centre, consisting of water pouring to make coffee; with smaller sounds panned and automated to create a stereo field. 

	Afternoon – Short, impactful triggers occur before this stage’s beginning to foreshadow these sounds in full – sounds of keychains shaking and garages being struck fill the frequency content, with sounds of bottles being blown acting as drones. A glissando effect from (pitching up/down) builds tension towards the final stage, whilst the opening of doors and handles allow the reintroduction of birds tweeting in relation to the pieces beginning. 

	Evening – The composition begins concluding as an abrupt sizzle of steak being fried is sounded. This along with various cooking appliances are heard, to symbolise that the day is near an end, with dinner being made. Spatulas scraping and tapping pans create rhythm, with bottles being hit adding to the timbre. As the Evening concludes, the frying/sizzling is slowly filtered out, with the kalimba (alarm clock) now reintroduced and inverted, acting almost as a coda.

The piece was structured this way to take listeners on a diurnal journey, throughout a sound environment associated with different times in the day. All of the sounds heard were recorded on an SMV88 (lightning USB) condenser microphone, inputted directly into my iPhone/iPad, which allowed me to create/capture various pieces of audio and field recordings on the fly. This workflow of being able to record clips of audio without having to plan and setup equipment made laying down ideas and tracks much easier, finding constant inspiration from my environments providing far little to no limits than that of a home studio. 





I was able to develop and manipulate the sounds through various iOS applications, such as Blocs Wave, where I could slice, sample, filter and distort sounds to create templates for said ideas before being processed in Live. Most of Diurnal is very dense, to show that the majority of our day is spent working – quieter moments allow for a ‘breather’ of sorts and often introduce a cooldown or build up, particularly in the piece’s centre.

Various sounds from various spaces, both close and external, are presented to the listener in quick succession through detailed editing and montage, resulting in a poly-spatial experience. Although numerous sounds from various origins are presented in juxtaposition, with potential for unruly cacophony, the work is paced in such a way that coherence is maintained. Excellent work."
