Third Son from London / UK is taking control for the seventh episode of our Parquet Recordings Mixtape Series. Third Son’s goal has always been simple - to make the best music he can. Coming from a musical family and trained as a musician from a young age, his innate passion for music has taken him through styles and experimentation the world over. While his successful debut EP "Geometry / Karma" together with Wally Lopez were released in August 2016, the brandnew follow-up solo-singles "Viscode / Film Score" on Parquet Recordings just arrived in the shops. 3 QUESTIONS to SOLVANE:

Q: Talking about your mix: how did you meet the bass with your selection? 

A: I was playing in bands my whole youth and was not at all into electronic music in my teenager years. In my early twenties I started with Daft Punk and slipped pretty fast into Electro, as this was way closer to where I was coming from: Rock and Punk-Rock. I decided to make a very honest podcast. Not with Ableton Live but recording it like I did it 10 years ago. I was checking my dusty vinyl collection and my old MP3s and made the DJ-mix without a setlist. Recorded it with a first take and didn't do any reworks. I've selected a lot of big classics from my past but played them in a way more comfortable bpm than 10 years ago. It felt good to me and I hope you guys like it just like I do. 

Q: You´ve been to Japan for a tour a few days ago. Tell us about! 

A: What a crazy country. It's even way more crazy than I expected. I've already played in a lot of Asian countries like Malaysia or Thailand but Japan was completely new to me. I've had the honour to play in 5 different cities 5 nights in a row and it was very intense. Very few sleep but lots of traveling and alcohol. I was really happy to share most of the days with lovely acts like Bebetta or Seth Schwarz! You can find a tour-video on my facebook page end of November. 

Q: You recently released on Stil vor Talent. Which further projects are coming up next? 

A: I was on the road a lot the last weeks so I am pretty happy to finally find some time to work on a follow-up release for Stil Vor Talent with my buddy Prismode. We've already finished a bunch of tracks and I hope Oli will like them as much as we do. So, there will be a new EP pretty soon.

What do you do to get into a creative state?
"Sometimes the machines just inspire me, sometimes I open a bottle of wine."

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
"Situations that I’m finding myself in in, the feelings I have, technology around me."

What do you love most about being an artist?
"Touching peoples hearts man. Seeing happy faces at gigs or getting messages of people that are moved by my music gives me a lot of strength."

How do you stay focussed in a world of constant distraction?
"Just turn off notifications & zero in on the machines. I have a lot of trouble focussing, so eliminating distractions helps me a lot."

Do you have a morning routine?
"Hell no, I’m not a morning person!"

What fascinates you about your art from?
"One guy sitting in his basement can do it all, create an atmosphere & make people move and feel – the ability to convey emotion through a technological intermediary."

What, for you, is the purpose of art?
"Expressing yourself through a medium & let other people feel by coming in contact with your work. Art does not necessarily has to have a function, in contrast to design – a lot of dance music (including mine) is more design than art."

What is sacred to you?
"Staying true to myself, integrity is key. I like the Egyptian afterlife concept of having your heart weighed against a feather."

What is your opinion on success?
"Success is when you look back on the path you treaded & get a warm, fuzzy feeling."

What is your opinion on failure?
"Failure is such a loaded term. The absence of success is not failure & failing a goal you set for yourself is not actually a bad thing. Every „failure“ is something you can learn from and improve."

What would your 16 year old you think about what you’re doing today?
"Since my 16 year old self was already dabbling with Ableton he would be like 'Damn you have all that gear - make more music!'“

What makes you laugh?
"Dogs. Dogs are awesome."

In which ways could the scene improve in the future?
"Right now there’s too much focus on self-marketing via social media & less on creativity and skill. This is in part due to an over-saturation of the market which makes it hard to be the cream rising to the top. I hope that in the future we find a way to honor quality & dedication and focus less on shiny pictures & follower metrics. 
Women are still underrepresented in my scene (especially on the production side) and sexism is still a thing. Hopefully, we can be more welcoming & kind towards dedicated female newcomers and have a more diverse palette of creative output together. 
What also bothers me is the stagnation. E.g., once there is a successful sound, a bunch of copycats swoop in and the market is flooded with „same-ish“, uninspired works. How did we evolve from ten years ago? Right now a lot of the new stuff that is most visible sounds like boring, recycled 90s stuff. Electronic music & especially Techno was once a promise of uncharted sonic territory and possiblity, so why do we always go back to the same 909 Drums and Acid Lines?"

Who will considerably give direction to the scene soon?
"Right now, we’re at a turning point due to the COVID-19 quarantine. After the dust settles I really hope that the underground spirit returns and a lot of new & creative artists emerge and get a chance to be heard. This is an extinction-level event for the clubbing scene, but after a forest fire new life always springs. And I really hope that the younger generation of artists will rise to the occasion and bring a new sonic diversity to the scene."

Favorite release at the moment & of all times?
"At the moment I really dig the first Koelsch Album 1977. 
Favorite release of all times is a hard pick. With Teeth by Nine Inch Nails and Gui Boratto’s Chromophobia have a special place in my heart."

For his long-awaited debut to ICONYC, we welcome Berlin resident Kaldera to the label. Kaldera delivers a slice of early summer vibes titled 'Reason of Necessary'. The original track kicks things off nicely with its melancholic moodiness shining through as we meander effortlessly through club inspired melodies, while the sultry chords sit wonderfully on top adding an extra layer of depth.

Lutzenkirchen, who needs no introduction created a rework full of tension from the word go, as the driving vibe keeps you moving with warm tinkling sounds, a palpable edge and some stomping effected sounding pieces. We basically have the formula for a bit of a monumental outing. The sparseness is the key here, as this restrained gem works its magic while it plays away, creating a thunderous glow while creating an air of sophistication. "Essential stuff!"

Next up we welcome our favorite Swiss producer and DJane Vanita who marks her return to the label with a classy rendition of 'Reason of Necessary'. Known for her melodic techno influenced sound, she keeps the ethereal theme of the original alive, as the pulsating bass powers along, before its drum fills and general warmth all combine to do the talking. Like something from yesteryear, yet sounding fresh and exciting. Lovely rework from Vanita. 

Lutzenkirchen's dub version is a stripped back affair. He takes the energy levels up a notch, with stripped back and lucid elements, before the scrumptious pads grace the rework, changing the vibe and creating a blanket of madness that wraps around the effected groove. It's all about the groove, cool driving techno vibes and driving beats that are working their magic around Lutzenkirchen's wonderfully arranged keys while the clever chords take the mind on a trip. 

With 'Reason of Necessary' Kaldera really shows that there're no boundaries, as this beautiful melodic gem guides you to a full-on club laden, melodic hug of a release that will cause many smile induced moments! 'Reason of Necessary' sees a worldwide release on May 11th, 2020 via every well-known digital content provider. Not to be missed.
