Note:
Never knew there were so many words to this song. On a bit of digging, seems they were written in 1806 by an English woman called Jane Taylor when she was 23, and the music is from an old French song from 1761 called 'Ah vous dirai-je Maman'. It was 'covered' by Mozart, which is why people often think he wrote it. Jane Taylor died at only 40 years old, her mind still "teeming with unfulfilled projects". Sounds familiar.

Note:
The origin isn't certain (according to Wikipedia anyway). Could be that the shoe relates to fertility. Dates all the way back to 1794, where the original end line was, "She whipp'd all their bums, and sent them to bed." Doesn't flow quite so well I think.
