UK based label NĀTIV returns with their fifth release since launching in 2020, welcoming a debut outing from a new project by the name of maXIon. Arriving on the label on 1st of April, maXIon delivers the two track Callisto / Zephyrus in a progressive style that sits perfectly with the label's growing discography that includes works from Nick Warren, Richie Blacker, Nicolas Rada, Black 8 and more. 
Sharing his thoughts on his NĀTIV debut, maXIon explains that “it’s been a bit of a journey to get here. Finding the right sound for this project didn’t come easy. The more I tried the further it went away. I stopped trying to chase it and only at that point, the tracks came together and with that came the idea for ‘maXIon’. Letting go of the worry was liberating.”
The barriers faced by maXIon that led to the creation of Callisto / Zephyrus are undetectable in the finished product, as the artist delivers two finely crafted tracks, each offering its own melody-guided journey to the listener. He continues “‘Callisto' and 'Zephyrus' are pivotal explorations of where I intend to be musically as an artist. It feels pretty refreshing to be releasing on a label that was equally in an almost early embryonic stage
too. The NĀTIV thing came in the oldest fashioned way; signed on the music alone without worrying about any social media or streaming history. Something that seems to prevent brand new music getting out of first base at the moment.”
Born out of a love of electronica, the recently formed project maXIon is a figmental electronic outlet brought into existence by a once confined artist who continues to traverse a deeper exploration of the musical landscape. Inspired by the likes of Floating Points and Rival Consoles, with a nod of the hat to Aphex Twin, maXIon’s music is made as a tonic to what's going on in the world. At times ethereal, at times heavy hitting,  it’s a soundtrack to what was and what may be out there.

'Pina', aptly titled after the newborn addition to the family, is a bundle of energy. It constantly grows larger and more complex before finally unleashing a fierce, sonic blast that wouldn’t seem out of place on the soundtrack to a Hitchcock film. In perfect Pan-Pot fashion.

As days go by and the wait for the new full length Pan-Pot album 'The Other' grows shorter and shorter, it's time to temper the restlessness again with two more meticulously selected tracks from the forth coming long player.

The cleverly titled 'Fist Bump From Destiny' is a story of patience with huge payoffs. At nearly 10 minutes, it's a long ride that builds slowly as persistent and hypnotizing tones circle and stalk, continually growing into the semblance of a cosmic clock. As the concept of time seems to disappear, the reward reveals itself: a fist bump from destiny.

'Operator' parallels the story of a tenacious vessel navigating a course through an impenetrable fog during the darkest shade of night. Low menacing rumbles and short sonic blasts serve as bold displays of position while a perpetually rising synth provides the momentum it employs to advance into the dark.

The Japanese Popstars return with their first new material in six years - the powerful anthem for these incredible times, ‘Checking Out’ ft. Martin Corrigan. The single is accompanied by a striking video, with both released on 31 July on The Japanese Popstars’ new label, FightTheNight. 

With ‘Checking Out’, the Northern Irish duo of Gary Curran and Gareth Donoghue unleash a blistering punk rock meets electro ode to the politics of negativity, inequality and segregation – much of which was as prevalent in 1970s/80s Northern Ireland as it remains worldwide in 2020. The impactful lyrics are passionately deployed by Alloy Mental’s Martin Corrigan, as he snarls such vital lines as “I’ve been segregated educated / beaten up and bruised / lied to and spied upon / Confiscated and confused / I'm Checking / I’m Checking Out.”

On the track’s key themes and video, The Japanese Popstars said: “'Checking Out is a rejection of the notions that encourage conflict and stress within Society, built on a Jesus Lizard bassline and Public Enemy beat.”

“In the video directed by Sean Curran we wanted to highlight some of the ideas of conflict and segregation that we first experienced growing up in Northern Ireland in the eighties and that we see now at a global scale, driven by ideologies, no matter what they are religious, political, financial, racial, all of which seem to want to push people apart rather than bring us closer together.”
