American artist and promoter Alain de Saracho has already made huge strides on his home turf of LA with the calibre of parties that has welcomed the likes of Politics of Dancing, Oshana, and Michelle. Of course, it wasn’t long before his brand Saturn Drive Records was born and with it a podcast series and label and this is where we pick up the story again after we premiered their first release back in 2020. They already began their imprinted story back at the tail end of 2020 with their debut release with original work from badman Christian Burkhardt and a remix from Parisian hotshot Politics of Dancing. Since the early 90s Rotterdam is known throughout the world of dance music for its many influential creative endeavours and one of these was the short-lived label See Saw. Active between 1991 and 1995, the label was the home to mostly Dutch producers who were just dipping their toes in the waters of house and techno. Or, who already had a whole leg in like Speedy J. 

Sandwiched between two of his early releases as The Melody (Discogs detectives know what’s up!) sits The Jewel EP, the only EP Gijs Vroom did under his Diamonds & Pearls alias. A kind stranger online once described the record as effective and joyful and we couldn’t agree more. It’s a mixed bag of zippy breaks, swirling pads, tight lately basses, and foxy vocal snips and like many records of the era it maximises charm with minimal equipment. It’s these kinds of twelve-inches that stood at the cradle of the Dutch house sound and so it is very deserving of a little nook in your record bag.

Ricochet is an unashamed terrace bomb which has been been tried and tested by the boys all winter. Nothing complicated here, just big beats and and tension-filled break that satisfies the dance floor with the introduction of a familiar sounding old school hip-hop style lead. Dubby chords then switch the track up for a few bars before going back to
business.

The flip opens with Transcend, an understated acid track perfect to keep things lively midset. The lead weaves it’s way thought the track whilst playing with a barely audible vocal and plenty of groovy percussion.

The record closes with Dubinnovation - something quite different from either of the producers’ usual styles. As the title suggests, the track takes influence from dub, using the sampled voice of Lee Scratch Perry. Rolling beats, rasping bass and mind warping effects make this the ultimate after party weapon.
