Haven is a place of safety, warmth, and comfort. 


Something a little different from my last few mixes - many of you know me for faster uptempo club mixes, but I also love and dig a lot of slower hypnotic tracks since I started DJing in 2007. I wanted to make a paced-out mix that I could really sink into and feel safe to tap into states of intimacy and warmth.

This mix was recorded on July 26 during one of Clara Tatjana and I's long music sessions in my studio. We were jamming to tunes and she contributed many awesome selections to the tracklist <3

With the current wave of lockdowns and many gig cancellations, I thought it fitting to share this feeling as we all incubate for the next.

While we cannot see small nanoscopic objects like proteins or other molecules that make up virtually all living matter including our cells, tissues, as well as pathogens such as viruses, our computational algorithm allows us to make its material manifestation audible.  This piece is a musical representation of the amino acid sequence and structure of the spike protein of the pathogen of COVID-19, 2019-nCoV (protein data bank identifier 6VSB [1]). 

MUSICAL DECEIT

A virus’ genome hijacks the host cell’s protein manufacturing machinery, and forces it to replicate the viral genome and produce viral proteins to make new viruses from it.  This musical art teaches us something about the fine line between beauty of life and death as an opposite pole.  As you listen to the protein you will find that the intricate design results in incredibly interesting and actually pleasing, relaxing sounds. This doesn’t really convey the deadly impacts this particularly protein is having on the world. This aspect of the music shows the deceiving nature of the virus, how it hijacks our body to replicate, and hurt us along the way. So, the music is a metaphor for this nature of the virus to deceive the host and exploit it for its own multiplication. 

HOW IT IS DONE: 

What you hear is a multi-layered algorithmic composition featuring both the vibrational spectrum of the entire protein (expressed in sound and rhythmic elements), the sequence and folding of amino acids that compose the virus spike structure, as well as interwoven melodies - forming counterpoint music - reflecting the complex hierarchical intersecting geometry of the protein [2].

¿Cómo se accede a la Libertad? ¿De dónde proviene? ¿Es algo realmente posible? Si lo es, ¿es común para todos? ¿es algo que podemos disfrutar al mismo tiempo y en un mismo espacio? Liberté es una ambientación sonora generada a partir de una movilización de pensamientos y preguntas en torno a la libertad, la cual puede resultar un poco abstracta, sin forma o dimensión, y quizás también, de complejo alcance.  En el lugar donde vivo es común la sensación de opresión y cautiverio, la vida puede representar una contienda bastante ardua, cualquier cuerpo puede ser colocado al borde de un extremo agotamiento y riesgo para su integridad. Es entonces que, a partir de un audio, compuesto por una mezcla de sonidos, aves que cantan en las primeras horas del día, el estruendo de un trueno, personas riendo, la lluvia, un joven que grita Liberté! Liberté! Liberté!, busco generar una posibilidad, una instancia, para que broten en ella sensaciones que trasciendan el aspecto físico del sonido y el espacio y nos sumerjan en una experiencia que nos hagan sentir o pensar la libertad.

MAx Provenzano (Venezuela, 1986). Visual and performance artist who works on the relationship between body, object and environment. Graduated from the School of Chemistry of the Faculty of Sciences of the UCV (2011). He studied at the Photography Laboratory of the Faculty of Science UCV (2008) and workshops on Venezuelan Art History at the National Art Gallery (2011), Experimental Drawing at UNEARTE (2012) and Photography at the Nelson Garrido Organization (2013) ).
