Historically, Halakha was in widespread use as an enforceable body of civil law. During the Age of Enlightenment, more Jews began assimilating into secular European society, and halakha became less central to Jewish life. Today, observance of Halakha is defined by denomination; Reform Jews generally do not follow it, Conservative Jews follow only part of it, Orthodox Jews observe the religious law strictly but modify other portions of it to suit modern life, while the most conservative communities like Lubavitchers and Haredim (the so-called "ultra-Orthodox") consider all of their respective flavors of Halakha as binding for all aspects of life. Some Orthodox communities in the United States have even established "modesty patrols" in their neighborhoods, which are creepily reminiscent of mutaween in some Islamic states.

Gil Hoffman records his show immediately after covering a dramatic press conference of Labor Party leader Avi Gabbay in which Gabbay shocked a room full of Knesset members when he announced he was breaking up the Zionist Union partnership that nearly defeated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu four years ago. Gil takes listeners behind the scenes at the event, describing the reactions of the Knesset members in the meeting and afterwards. He ends the show by lamenting the departure of Knesset members who have served the English speaking community in Israel well and whose political future is in doubt.

Rabbi Eric Yoffie served as the President of the Union for Reform Judaism, the congregational arm of the Reform Movement in North America from 1996 to 2012. Yoffie received his rabbinical ordination from the Hebrew Union College in 1974 and served in many high-level roles until being elected the President of the Union for Reform Judaism.

This was a remote interview with Eric in New Jersey and me in Jerusalem. We spoke about what Judaism expects of a Reform Jew, the Kotel, conversions, Chabad, the Palestinians and much more.
