Without dancehall bringing us sound system culture, none of the electronic music we hold so dear would exist. So why is it so often underrepresented when we talk about dance music’s history?

To tackle this and more, we brought in author Marvin Sparks, one of the UK’s preeminent experts on reggae and dancehall.

Of course, there was also some topical news to cover: namely, the potential release from prison of Vybz Kartel, arguably the most important dancehall artist of the 21st century. As is often the case, press coverage of the Kartel case has been pretty meagre, so we asked Marvin for a summary of the latest developments, and to just why is Kartel so important to modern-day music?

Marvin’s also on fine form when it comes to the big picture stuff: dancehall’s influence on all the music you love, the issues with its press coverage in and out of Jamaica, his next book and his experience as an expert in a genre that, as he puts it, people who want to read about music don’t typically care enough about.

No guest on this episode of No Tags, but big(-ish) news: we’re going weekly!

We’ve released an episode of this podcast every fortnight since launching last November, but the time feels right to try and make things more frequent. So, the plan at the moment is to stick to a guest-focused episode every two weeks or so, but the rest of the time, Tom and Chal will sit down and chat the latest music news and developments, get into some recent records they’re currently feeling, and generally just shoot the shit. It’s going to be loose, it might get quite silly, but there’ll hopefully be some insight along the way.

All this comes off the back of quite a bit of listener feedback requesting more non-guest episodes. But first, thoughts on Coachella, the haunted nostalgia of the modern-day festival circuit, and why for better or worse, we might have a lot more DJ sets like that Grimes disaster-class to come.
