Ren' Radio #038 - blaktone

As prolific as he talented, Dmitry Molosh has continued to present the underground dance fraternity with a panoply of immaculately crafted tracks. Now reprising "River Pond" with its release alongside a remix from Polish icon, Kobana in late 2021, Proton Music returns to the track with a pair of sparkling new remixes courtesy of Italian and UAE artists.

Andrea Cassino is a name synonymous with a modern progressive house sound. Born in Italy but now firmly based in his adopted Argentinean home, the Buenos Aries resident has been a regular contributor to the Proton catalogues with a slew of original music and a quartet of high-profile remixes. His May 2017 "Divine" EP opened his account with a stunning twin track offering, while September's "Losing Part of Me" saw a powerful collaboration with Greenage. Collaborating with Lio Q in October 2021 bore fruit via the "Asante" EP while remixes for GMJ, Michael A, Rudy and Kamilo Sanclemente & Dabeat, told their own story of Cassino's success.

Reworking "River Pond", a bouncing bass groove immediately supplies dancefloor credibility as sweeping pads and themes resonant in Molosh's original, filter into range. A stripped back breakdown provides the perfect opportunity for a new melody to extend out of the original's central motif, before the second half arrives courtesy of the familiar rhythmic groove and dominant kick. The result is a highly accomplished reworking that pays an atmospheric and evocative tribute.

An artist with regular performances across his Dubai home at the likes of Trilogy and Pacha Ibiza Dubai, Ejaz Ahamed has been a regular warm-up DJ for such luminaries as Digweed, Cattaneo and Zabiela. No less impressive is a production portfolio that includes appearances on Perspectives Digital, Stellar Fountain and James Warren's Visceral compilation series. A quartet of remixes for Proton Music has seen reworkings of Juan Deminicis and Julian Nates amongst others as he now returns to the label for a fifth outing.

Creating a smooth flowing rhythmic foundation, offbeat shakers combine with heavy beat and percussive flair. Evolving effortlessly, a crunchy arpeggio appears over the sonic horizon while a series of ethereal pads provide counterweight and balance. Hitting its stride after a breakdown infused with intensity and production know-how, Ahamed transforms "River Pond" into a newly imagined progressive house gem, full of flair and unparalleled sound design that illustrates talent in abundance and meticulous production craftsmanship.

Pedro Capelossi makes a welcome return to Loot Recordings with three new originals that showcases his deep, hazy sound that’s immersed in melodic atmospheres and cosmic soundscapes. 

The title track “Horimono” is a mesmerizing affair with an arrangement of warm chord stabs, swirling synths and spaced-out vibes. The breakdown brings us in deeper, creating mystery with a seductive female spoken vocal. Brazil’s Chiari delivers a remix that increases the energy for the peak time moments that intertwines smooth layers of deep house with the grit of deep techno aesthetics. 

“Irezumi” is a deep groove of swaying synths combined with psychedelic overtones, accented by whirling synth hooks and a booming bass rhythm. Krissky delivers a dubby, tripped out interpretation that appears to stretch time with its slow groove and tweaked out effects and analog sounds. A real tension builder.

Closing the release is “Dark Purpose”, highlighted by a punchy bass line, crisp percussion on top of comforting strange effects and blissful chords. A real chunky groove that can set the tone for the night or welcome the morning sun.

With releases coming thick and fast this year, Israeli talent Maydan is riding something of a wave of popularity, topped off with a debut on Beat Boutique! Double-header Away/Burn Cloud comes with remixes from the luminary Murat Uncouglu and Michael A.

In its original form, Away is floaty and otherworldly. Synthlines mingle from the off creating a warm textured bedrock for the crisp percussive drive to sit. Vocordered vocals add to the vibe of this summery crowd-pleaser. On the remix, Turkish dance pioneer Murat Uncuoglu turns in a powerful reditition smoothing out the bumps for a peak-time ride.

Burn Cloud bursts into life from the first beat. Alive with energetic vigour, the melodies swirl as the shaker-led percussion ushers in layers of synth delicacies, growing into a tour de force in the second half. Belarusian, Michael A, fresh from his recently release on Sudbeat provides a wild remix focusing on sound design and creating a slightly off-kilter atmosphere perfect for those early mornings when the sun is still asleep.

Rising out of Israel’s hotbed of talent, Maydan is an artist with an impressive story to tell. From bedroom DJ to highly-regarded nightclub resident, the Israeli native has carved out a niche of sizeable proportions as he continues his assault on the global dance scene.

Rising to the upper echelons of his country’s ever-expanding music scene from humble origins, a mixer and a pair of turntables saw Maydan climb to the summit of the Tel Aviv dance scene, coupled with a burning passion and an unwavering dedication to his craft. Add to the mix a healthy dose of talent and experience and it quickly becomes clear why the Israeli became resident at some of the most elegant hotspots in his city with his finger perfectly poised over the cultural pulse.

Able to command an audience far beyond his homeland, DJ performances in Zurich, Prague and Amsterdam’s famous, Club NL, have extended the Maydan name outside his country’s borders. Moreover, DJ appearances alongside a surfeit of hallowed names – from Carl Cox and Sasha to Hernan Cattaneo and Joris Voorn – have showcased the MayDan name in the bright glow of neon lights.

Inspired by leading figures that have shaped the underground dance scene, both at home and on the international stage, the Maydan production career has continued to grow apace since joining the Asymmetric Recordings roster in 2015. Subsequently heading up A&R for both the main label and its sister imprint, Asymmetric Dip, Maydan’s role has evolved impressively over time. With his work additionally signed to Cattaneo’s Sudbeat and Tvardovsky’s Dear Deer, Maydan’s work for the Lonya led label provided a new impetuous for his music to shine with 2016’s “Absolute Isolation” EP taking centre stage. Supported by the DJ glitterati that includes Nick Warren, Max Graham and Cattaneo himself, Maydan’s original and remix production material continues to attract widespread backing from all corners of the globe.

A career that continues to gather momentum in 2017 and beyond, the Maydan star burns brightly in Israel’s glittering firmament. With a sparkling future ahead, the world below is mapped out for him to conquer.
