Brazilian music is widely known for samba and bossa nova, but with a landmass approximately 23 times that of Japan, the country is home to countless musical treasures that remain largely undiscovered. Alongside popular music, Brazil has a rich history of experimental music and music which could be considered ambient, many of which were ahead of their time and went unrecognized upon release.

For this selection, I’ve curated music from Brazil spanning the 1950s to the 1980s, using my own broad interpretation of the "experimental, avant-garde, and ambient" realm. From Garoto’s guitar pieces—featuring voicings so sophisticated that it’s hard to believe they were created in the early 20th century—to the wild fusion of spirituality and Afro-Brazilian percussion by Pedro Santos. Then there’s Marconi Notaro, whose music evokes the arid landscapes of northeastern Brazil, and Naná Vasconcelos, who lived in harmony with the spiritual essence of the Amazon.

These works are at once Afro-influenced, chamber-like, and rooted in rock, yet they also connect deeply with modern Brazilian popular music and jazz. While many of these tracks might be considered "B-sides" in a commercial sense, they exist on the razor’s edge between the mainstream and the avant-garde—each one a stunning piece of music.

サンバやボサノヴァで知られるブラジル音楽ですが、日本の約23倍の面積を誇るその地にはまだまだ世間的に知られていない音楽が沢山あります。ポピュラー音楽と並行して、実験的なサウンドや広い意味でのアンビエントな作品も数多く、世に出てくるのが早すぎて当時は評価されなかったような作品も多く埋もれています。今回はブラジルの50s~80sという縛りで、私の独自の広い解釈で「エクスペリメンタル・アヴァンギャルド・アンビエント」という脈略に通じる音楽を集めました。
20世紀前半に生み出されたとは信じ難いヴォイシングのGarotoのギター曲、スピリチュアルとアフロが融合したパーカッションニストPedro Santosの狂気、ブラジル北東部の砂漠地帯を連想させるMarconi Notaro、アマゾンの精神性と共に生きたNaná Vasconcelos。アフロでもあり、室内楽的でもあり、ロックでもあり、かつ現代のブラジルポピュラー音楽やジャズにも通じる。一般的にはB面的な曲たちですが、全てメインストリームと紙一重のところに存在している素晴らしい作品です。

Born in Tokyo. After graduating from high school, he moved to Brazil and spent about seven years there to research Brazilian popular music and culture. He is the first Japanese guitarist to graduate from the Choro Department of “Tatuí Conservatory of Music” in Sao Paulo State with a major in classical 7 strings guitar. While studying at the conservatory, he began producing music in genres other than Brazilian music. He has released albums from Lontano Series (Italy), Whitelabrecs (UK), La Petite Chambre(BR) and Mystery Circles (US).

作曲家・プロデューサー。95年東京生まれ。家族の影響で中学校に上がると共にレコード収集を始める。高校卒業後にギター修行のためブラジルへ渡り約7年間を現地にて過ごす。ショーロやJazz/MPBを研究しながら、日本人として初めてサンパウロ州立タトゥイ音楽院をショーロギター専攻で卒業。在学中に映画音楽作家Gui Amabisのスタジオで音楽プロダクションの基礎を学び、ブラジル音楽以外のジャンル下で音楽制作を始める。個人名義ではRohs! Records、Whitelabrecs、Mystery Circles等のアンビエント系レーベルから多数のリリースを行い、アーティストインレジデンシーやStone Music（タージ・マハル旅行団）のギタリストとして国内外ツアーへの参加、商業音楽作家としては国内外の映画やドキュメンタリー、アートインスタレーション、企業CM等への楽曲提供を行う。また興行プロデューサーとして、2024年にアーツカウンシル東京とブラジル大使館の助成の元、ブラジル人ギタリストJoão Camareroと笹久保伸のギター公演を主催。来日ブラジル人アーティストや研究者の日葡同時通訳、ディスクユニオン傘下のTh!nk Recordsにて評論や翻訳を担当するなど、幅広い分野で活動する。

This mix was conceived during a two-and-a-half month stay in Aarhus, Denmark, from January to March, 2025. In mid-winter there, the sun doesn't rise until nearly 9am, and it sets by 4pm. Even during the day, the light is soft, as if farther off, distant. There are no mountains in Denmark, and so the wind is strong. On cold days, the wind can take your breath away, sweep the air right out of your lungs. The beginnings of the mix formed from the sounds that calmed me and kept me warm as I was adjusting to this new environment. The soothing refrain of Yoshio Ojima's 'Radio Star' in particular assuaged my anxiety as I lay staring at an unfamiliar ceiling. In late February, I visited Paris for the first time, and the moment I stepped out of the Gare du Nord, I was captured by the aura of the city and it's layer upon layer of history. The remainder of the mix coalesced during this trip, the focus being on a combination of 90s sonics. The recordings for the opening and closing were also made in Paris.

Zefan Sramekの基本名義 "Precipitation"。House, Techno, Ambient, New-Ageの音を混ざっているプロジェクト。ヴィンテージシンセとハードウェアを使い、2011年から活動している。雲の動き、流れ水の音、森林の緑などにインスパイアされているメランコリックなサウンド。アンビエント、環境音楽、ニューエージのカセット・レーベル、梅レコード、のオーナー。2019年から東京で活動している。

"Precipitation" is Zefan Sramek's central alias, a project that mixes House, Techno, Ambient and New-Age sounds. Using vintage synths and hardware, he has been making music since 2011. His melancholic sound is inspired by the movement of clouds, the sound of running water, and the greenery of forests. He is also the founder of Umé Records, a cassette label for ambient, environmental music, and New-Age, active in Tokyo since 2019.
