Skankandbass is dedicated towards the official promotion of record labels and artists in the world of drum & bass music. Since inception in 2010, Skankandbass has unearthed some of the freshest talents in the scene and has opened many doors for unsigned artists. Now, six years in to the game, Skankandbass decides to take on the role of a record label to put together a series of free download singles which aims to further help spread the work of the best unsigned, newcomer artists who deserve more recognition.

SNB008 comes from Cruk, a seriously talented producer dabbling in drum & bass and Neurofunk since 2010, and occasionally other genres under 'blues'. Under the restless blanket of a heartless night, the sculptor shifted uneasily in his atelier sleeping quarter. Slumber evaded him, every hallucination of momentary solace chased quickly into the shadows of his disquiet. Tormented by the weight of his task, to surpass the greatest creators of the past and deliver to their dynasty an icon to strike fear and awe into the hearts of the proletariat… In the depths of that darkness his mind cried out to every conceivable higher entity, light and dark – begging for the inspiration that would save him. With the encroachment of dawn, tiredness washed over him… pulling his flayed mind into a shallow sea of morbid sleep. A torrent of nightmares flooded him - visions of an amorphous entity clawing at birthing sack, a hideous soul struggling for its freedom. He awoke with a choking gasp... adrenaline flowing. Something glinted dully upon his bedside in the morning light – the razor edge of a sculptor’s blade. Picking it up and looking closely at its sharp form, covered in an obscure script. He was certain it wasn’t there in the night, it certainly wasn’t one of his… He rose from bed, moving over to the head-shaped block of clay that had awaited his touch for too long. With precision he swiftly scraped deep into the featureless façade. Gasping suddenly, he staggered back, dropping the infernal tool in horror - fear seared deep into his eyes… the clay had reacted, drawing away from the blades edge as if it was living tissue, a trickle of blood seeping out of the fresh wound. The barely shaped head was moving… writhing as if in pain, as if it couldn’t breathe – as if there was something trapped inside... He quickly picked up the blade, cutting again and again, freeing its twisted and tortured mouth, slicing away the substance piece by piece, uncovering the flesh beneath… freeing anguish-filled, bloodshot eyes that flicked around in perpetual terror. Stepping back… he looked with mouth aghast at the vision that confronted him – the head twisting to free itself from his sculptor’s block, a vision of suffering, the deep pain of reality flooding into his creation’s soul.

Desmond McMahon returns for the second time to a record label who have firmly solidified themselves within both the US and European drum & bass market, having already bridged the gap across the Atlantic. His next EP on Santoku is an expert follow on from the release which provided a pedestal for the young producer, one who’s paved his way through the scene’s biggest stages in the US, the type which tastemakers look to when they consider the underground success of dance music’s pivotal sub genre. The finely-honed sounds of Des have often brought out the freshest turns in DJ sets and mixing styles, providing an intricate look into the younger members of drum & bass and the talent which they’re currently bringing through the ranks.

The four-track package from Des is a look into the versatility of the upcoming producer - from ‘No Need to Speak’ through to ‘Ghost’, he grapples with his heavy layering and carefully laid out musicality in a way that demonstrates just how illustrious he is as an artist. This time he’s taken a more dance floor approach, opposed to the cut throat style of his ‘Delirium’ EP, whilst still pushing his signature throughout every meticulous segment he builds, one on top of the next.

‘No Need to Speak’ draws you straight into the fray with drums which administer swift punches and a bassline that crackles throughout the mix. Next up ‘Bad Habits’ is just as dynamic, creating a driving rhythm which is punctuated by the records swift hooks that jump out from you between the composition. Following on is ‘Bulletproof’ which nods to its namesake and it’s impenetrable in its make up. And finally you’re brought into the wavering movements of ‘Ghost’, the perfect end to his ‘No need to Speak’ EP and giving a final snapshot into his diversity as a producer.

Santoku highlight how they have an eye for picking up blossoming newcomers - and Des is leading the charge. Although a go-to from the beginning, Santoku are making themselves widely felt without the need to submit to a more commercial appeal.
