For Saxophone Quartet

Growing up in a musical family, our house was always filled with music coming from every direction. Designed by Bernard Maybeck in 1913 as a weekend cottage and one of the earliest houses in our San Francisco neighborhood, it has a very open design -- sound travels. This was certainly an issue whenever one of us played the piano. It was an even bigger issue when my brother practiced his tenor saxophone. "Get a Grip" harkens back to the sounds, the struggles, the monotonous exercises, the fun jam sessions, and the sweet memories of those childhood days. You will hear a variety of styles, textures, and emotions weaving in and out of each other, much like moving from one room to another in a house filled with young musicians alternating between diligent practice, discouraging frustration, and creative improvisation. The piece is dedicated to my brother and his tenor saxophone: may the truce hold.

A White Blossom

Marshall is a musician and educator based in Austin, TX. His works have been performed by Hexnut, Wet Ink Ensemble, Clogs, Aeros Wind Quintet, and the Santa Clara Chamber Singers, among others. Marshall has taught composition at Santa Clara University and currently serves on the faculty of The Walden School’s Young Musicians Program, Teacher Training Institute, and Creative Musicians Retreat. In Spring 2011 he was the Artist in Residence at Dublin School in New Hampshire. He is currently a graduate student at the University of Texas, Austin.
