This sums up the meaning of the entire song pretty succinctly. It is about the willingness to go on a internalized journey through the layers of self, forgoing the traditional roles and games of society, in favour of a quest for a deeper existential meaning and transformation.

This paragraph refers most explicitly to the types of psycho-somatic experiences that result from the practices of deep contemplation: the experiencing of subtle energy, inner lights, and a feeling of ‘jacking in’ to some external force (whether it is external or internal is a matter of scholarly debate that still rages however, personally I think it is unimportant – these ‘experiences’ are fleeting, it is the flowering of consciousness which is enduring)

An emphasis is on transcending the limitations of personality and to rise into a place of authentic being.. when you believe in yourself and come from a place of authenticity, it will be immediately noticeable for others who will come to trust you.

“I hold this close to me” It describes multiple things, the first is that this journey is close in the sense of proximate; it happens in the private world of personal consciousness. The second sense is that I ‘hold it close’ because I regard it as important. It is like a faith, I say ‘like’ a faith because it is not the blind faith of religion, it is so close that it feels like it is part of me, not like a god; a metaphysical other that I can never experience. In fact this closeness to it means that it colours every detail of my experience, it is there in my love, my hate, my motivations and the meaning I make for things.

One thing that developmental psychologist Abraham Maslow noticed is that when one makes a leap from being concerned with more simple needs like food, shelter, sex and emotional safety (what he called ‘deficiency needs’) to what he called ‘being needs’ something remarkable happens: fear drops off.

It's not easy! all the old egocentric and ethnocentric worldviews are fighting desperately, even as more harmonious, global centric approaches to human existence emerge in a tiny fraction of the worlds population. One only need look at the expansionist crusades of the neo-cons, theocratic militancy, the re-emergence of fascism in Europe, to see this struggle will be a formidable one.

although confusion and chaos predominate in our lifes, sometimes we can recognize that in the journey through the layers of our person, we are moving inexorably towards clarity, compassion and oneness, here represented as a bright, white light.

Yes the beat don’t stop this epoch’s not the end, cities chock-a-block but still got oxygen, still got, something to fight for, die for, something to live my life for and I intend to be one of the survivors, but that’s is cos, the buck stops with us, no ifs no buts, no matter who you cuss. If your not on the bus it wont be enough to save you, if you don’t reach the ocean the tide wont turn in your favour and all those leaving planet earth will be like ‘See ya later’….

Fly With Me

I wrote this after 2001 while the war in Afghanistan was under-way. So there is a political backdrop to it. But, I wrote the song feeling that the conflict and deception seen between countries on the global stage is projection of the personal and inter-personal conflict many of us feel in the 'closeness' of our own life-world. We have every right to be angry about governments pushing agendas that don't match the will of the people, but we should be equally concerned about our own part in personal deceptions, troubles and conflicts - the wars that we can probably do more about. It's no good crusading for peace in the world if we can't have peace in our lives.
