As you'll know this song is a Johnny cash classic. The singing this time round is outstandingly done by Ron. 
The songs about a druggie lamenting on how his life amounts to an empire of dirt...and how he harms himself to see if he can still feel pain. 
This is the bit I've tried to capture musical,the stabbing percussion is him using pain to travel between his world of drug induced oblivion and the real world..

Even if the music doesn't deliver ...enjoy the vocals by my s/c buddy Ron..
