The time was half past midnight and the day from before had been wiped clean by the clicking noise of the clock. It hung abruptly upon the wall within the factory as the workers looked up from below with a dazed expression. They had been confined to the metallic blur of the industrial space for far too long and had forgotten what the greenery of the outside world and the jungle looked like. Grey was all to be seen within the blurry discourse of this space and time was relative.

Midnight Tenderness is set to release a brand new EP on the rising Australian label of the moment Ken Oath. The imprint is in fine form as they deliver another jazzy take on house music purpose built for the discerning dancefloor.

Helmed by Sydneysider Jackson, Aussie label Moonshoe releases refined, home-grown house music on the softer side of the spectrum. After premiering the imprint’s fourth release by Freda in April, we are delighted to deliver to you their latest transmission: MSH005. The 12” is the collaborative genius of two vanguards of the Melbourne underground: Analog Attic alumni Matthew Hayes and 70/30 collective veteran Ziggy Zeitgeist. The pair have a diverse musical background of jazz music and drumming respectively, and the latest 12” unifies their sound impeccably. 

Our premiere, the A1: Emerald Conifers, opens the record by setting the scene somewhere in the native Victorian landscape where lush pads and tinkling hats dance above us like Milky Way in a clear sky. As the bassline builds, the track locks into an uplifting groove. It’s the type of sound made for the outdoors, for that moment of the doof where you look around and appreciate the way dancers become one with nature. Just past the five-minute mark, a deep mind-melting vocal begins to delicately intermingle with the tracks other elements. Ziggy’s fervent live drumming and a nimble piano riff bounce off each other nicely, accelerating then decelerating as the track winds towards a gentle close.  

The rest of the track picks up where things left off, inviting us on a meditative journey into the cosmos. With a soundscape that extends from ambient techno to breakbeat and downtempo house, finding a nexus between the disparate influences is no mean feat. But Hayes and Zeitgeist make it seem effortless. The EP combines disparate influences into something that feels refreshingly original and satisfyingly whole.

Fifty releases in the bag, WOLF Music come correct with a second drop in their 10th year release schedule from French wizard LB aka LABAT, as hotly anticipated as anything Palace could even begin to dream up.
 
‘Scanner’ opens the EP with LB bringing that trademark MPC crunched, sample-heavy style he’s become known for. Dusty jazz loops, distorted percussive hits and vocal cut ups, sounding like they’re straight outta forgotten VHS movies, are laid over the top of a monstrous bassline and emotive strings for a contorted house bomb.
 
Next up ‘Track One’ hits with some Theo Parrish inspired, full frontal synthwork as tight drums and an effect-laden melody are interjected with soulful vocal snippets and a fervent kick. A surefire dancefloor destroyer with a big bass breakdown for good measure.
 
Flip it over for a heads down, late-night ‘Dirty Walk’ with fizzing percussion blending behind sublime Rhodes, overdriven kick drums and that acid infused bass, ready set to be a club staple this year. ‘Shut The World Down For A Moment’ rounds things off, capturing the syncopated mind of LB with a half-time drum loop in the background, slightly off kilter, that he somehow just makes work into a hazy jam.
 
Half century complete and kicking off the next with a bang from the man they call LB aka LABAT.
