Mark has taken an interesting approach while creating this blissful mix. The tempo makes a gentle arc up from 120 to 124 bpm and then back down again, mirroring the way the sun bends low over the horizon during a short winter day. From this oblique angle the light glows and glistens.

Fully committed to digging the troves of modern dance music, Slee aims to uncover releases that stand out. His monthly mix show on Proton Radio showcases his discoveries, with over 100 mixes presented in the past decade. In 2016, Slee joined forces with musical partner Atish to form the label Manjumasi. Debuting with his own Nocturne Belle EP, Manjumasi celebrates quirky dance music that explores new territory without forgetting the dance floor. Beyond Manjumasi, Slee's original productions and remixes have been released on such imprints as Cityfox, Seven Villas, Lost Diaries, Cosmic Society, Magician On Duty, Nugget, Where the Heart Is, Proton Music, and more. In addition to regular appearances on his San Francisco home turf, Slee's style has earned him DJ sets in notable locales, such as Kater Blau and Sisyphos in Berlin, Cityfox in New York, and Robot Heart.

Since 2016 Slee has also been developing immersive, spatial audio-visual production tools for systems of up to 32 channels via Envelop. Notable live performances with Envelop include MUTEK.SF and FORM Arcosanti.

Powel : Good Morning from Berlin

It's difficult to find the right words to put to this one. These are certainly the darkest times I can remember living through. The murder of George Floyd was as senseless as it was predictable, in the midst of a period that I feel confident history will judge as abhorrently lacking in leadership. The anger and anguish brought to the fore in this moment clearly run far deeper than just one egregious injustice. I'd love to be able to say I felt more optimism, that we've really reached the crossroads this time. But to be bluntly honest I'm not sure I believe it. I suspect America still has a very long and difficult road ahead, as we stumble after a story to bind us together, beyond individual self-determination.

I hope it goes without saying that I don't think a DJ mix accomplishes anything of socio-political substance, and it honestly feels fairly navel-gazing to be putting out an "abstract feelings" mix right now. But music is a constant companion for me, so here we are. All I'll say about this mix musically is that it's ambient and it doesn't really have a goal. Might make you feel tense and angry, might create a calm space for feeling sad, might do something else entirely. If you do choose to spend an hour with it, I hope you will find it worthwhile.

Hard to fathom that the year is already drawing to a close. As strange as it has all been, I'm left with the feeling that the time has just gently disappeared, without so many of life's usual events and occurrences to register its passage. And yet, the turning of 2019 of course feels a lifetime ago. Ambient music for me has a bit of that timeless quality, a formlessness, an amorphous sinking-in. So here's a bit of that — to hopefully help unwind, and perhaps to look forward to a more regularly scheduled future.
