I programmed this with a Piano MIDI controller. (No samples yet.)

Learned to make bass lines and autotuned vocals.

Learned a bunch of Ableton plugins - including EQ8, AutoFilter, Compressor, Vocoder, BeatRepeater, Chorus, Saturator.

Funky Friday

I discovered synths! The beauty of being able to shape waveforms into unique-sounding instruments.

In this song, every instrument you hear, besides the drums and a few notes of guitar sound, is a synth.

The way I created this song was by first playing with the synths, until I found a synth sound I liked and a bass-y melody that fit (the first thing you hear in the song). Then layering on top more instrumental synth melodies, and finally vocals.

Then I went back and changed the instrumentals to fit the vocals better.

This is an electronic remix of Luke Bryan's "Country Girl". Yes, that's me singing with a vocoder lol

I've been wanting to make a country song for a while. But there were multiple challenges:

1) Complex singing. I'm just not a good singer yet, and country is led by vocals.
2) Complex harmonies. While much of country pop uses the same chords/musical tricks, the harmonies and chords can still be quite complex, and difficult for a beginner to write from scratch. Every time I tried to write country melodies/chords, it didn't sound "country".
3) Very specific instrumental sounds. I have the Standard edition of Ableton, which doesn't come with most of the instruments I need for Country music (Fiddle, Banjo, etc.)

So I took the sheet music for Luke Bryan's "Country Girl", and programmed it into Ableton. Then from my limited set of instruments, I tried to find ones which "fit" the music. And then sang over it.

Hopefully, this helps me build some melodic/harmonic context, so I can write my own original country music soon.

Just messing around with different styles. Thought this beat came out pretty smooth.

Bounce

I haven't made a track in a while. This is the first song where I built everything on-top of a chord progression (two chord progressions in A-minor scale), instead of randomly throwing stuff together. The rhythm, bass line, and melody are all driven by the chord progression.

Recorded some inaudible vocals too, with heavy effects. Ended up sounding like it's influenced by Daft Punk and Kanye West.

First time using Serum. All instruments, except the drums, used the Serum VST plugin. Also my first drop.

Around age 13, I used to listen to Smooth Jazz quite a bit. My dad would be driving, and I would tune in to KKSF 103.7 FM radio station. I loved this music, because it was so "smooth" and relaxing. Sadly, this station no longer exists, because Smooth Jazz is no longer cool. But that's OK, because tonight, on the eve of my birthday, I'm releasing this track called "Birthday Eve". Enjoy!

Production notes to self: Used chords more seriously this time. With matching bass line. Added a bouncing autofilter. Used Serum VST plugin. Tried to make the song thematically cohesive (i.e., in one style).
