King of my backyard is a soundtrack for breaking out of the 9 to 5 tedium and into the ecstasy of those carefree low rent nights on the town. You know, those nights that threaten to get out of hand at any moment, where inhibitions don’t exist and taking risks is part of feeling alive.
The song starts low key, reflecting the drab and the dour of a working life, but defeat turns into defiance as momentum builds into a joyful and chaotic anthem. Barely contained guitars squeal with feedback and horns crash in with more energy than precision. Vocal stabs spring out of nowhere as if to egg on the protagonist whilst the cadence switches from bombastic regge’ish swagger to a driving rock beat that echoes in every Australian suburban drinking hole.

This is a story from when I lived in North London in the early 90s. Our local pup was run by a lovely couple, he was a larger than life londoner who knew his punters so well he'd start pouring your drink as he saw you walk in, and she was warm hearted, kind and organised.

There were often lock-ins held for the regulars and one night there was a special party with a special announcement that they were expecting their first child. Whilst in apparently good spirits, our gregarious publican was suffering from sweats and shakes. He said he'd caught a bug and kept disappearing upstairs. Eventually he said good night to us all, and stay up as late as we like, the lovely wife will hold the bar...

The following morning, hungover, I walked past the front door to find her, inconsolable. As it turned out, our lovable publican owed money to the kind of people you shouldn't mess around with. Gambling debts apparently. He'd emptied the safe and gone.

Several years later, I heard that he eventually handed himself in and had done a spell. He was last seen washing cars on a used car lot.

The pub is no longer the Half Moon, it was renamed The Three Wishes

This is perhaps my most personal song so far, kind of about how supposedly mundane situations like queuing to order a coffee can be completely overwhelming and the internal monologue that keeps me steady on the outside.
I used a bunch of samples from Cymatics Fantasy one-shots to really inject some analogue warmth and grit, most notably the Oberheim bassline that I used in the chorus instead of a fuzzy riffy guitar, and various pad sounds that I then applied some filters to, emphasising that analogue shimmer

Me In A Dream is a 3 piece indie rock band from Melbourne, Australia. Drawing on influences from the Brit alt-rock scene, including Foals, Doves, White Lies and Bloc Party, then injecting thoughtful melodies and an occasional, but distinctly Australian psychedelic edge reminiscent of Holy Holy and The Belligerents, finally stirring a healthy dose of electronic textures, Me In A Dream carves out a unique sound that dances freely across genre boundaries.

The project was conceived by the deep-voiced frontman Chris Pehrson, inspired by a strange fan message from a previous project claiming to have been visited by an angel in a dream with a request to help him. Whilst on an intense, lockdown-induced songwriting binge, it became clear that the songs deserved to be performed with the energy of a live band. The addition of drummer Michael Cathie and bassist Sienna Armstrong has transformed Me In A Dream into an engaging and energetic force.
