2024 Showcase Mix

Presenting: ‘CHAOS/Clarity’, the newest EP from @illanthropymusic. 

This EP plays with the ever-present, often subtle dance of duality. Just as it is true that we would not know light without darkness and we would not know true pleasure unless we had felt deep pain, the experience of clarity could not arise without its counterpart: chaos. This poignant mandala of chaos/clarity penetrates our lives primarily through our thoughts and emotions, with chaos embodying the bombardment of negative thought patterns that ultimately lead to feelings of frustration and hostility. We find our awareness drawn to chaos like moths to a flame, whether on a personal scale or a global scale, focusing on the blatant corruption, turmoil, and pain that’s all around us in a peripherally blind society. These days there is certainly no shortage of chaos sources, so we feel it’s crucial to address the internal experiences we’re all sharing to carve a path of clarity through the chaos. Although our awareness is often pulled simultaneously in multiple directions and our emotions are heavily charged, there remains a piece of ourselves underneath the chaos that watches it all play out. Through conscious effort, this seed of clarity can be tapped into and cultivated as it expands and deepens.  

The front half of this EP represents the CHAOS we’ve been discussing, beginning with a tongue-in-cheek tip of the hat to mass media. The intro to ‘BLUESCREEN’ features an ominously morphed series of voices as we flip through television stations to hear the various harbingers of doom that call themselves newscasters. The voices fade out as the background frequencies come to the forefront, and the journey begins.. In his uniquely cinematic way, illanthropy introduces movement as the build-up ensues and gradually intensifies, making the arm-hairs stand up when we realize we’re in for a hell of a ride when it drops. With potential energy maxed out to capacity, the drop sends us soaring through a field of gritty textures and menacing static as the powerful bass frequencies drive our bodies to movement. 

‘FL4BB3RG4ST3D’ offers a more playful embodiment of chaos, while still maintaining a deliciously uneasy feeling. Once it drops, the lead synth resembles a human voice in its inflections, bringing to mind the hostile, polarized back-and-forth that arises on social media platforms between aggressors on either side of a sociopolitical issue. Thanks to anonymity and gaslighting, we succumb to spewing out ad hominem attacks as our words fall on deaf ears and the polarization intensifies, embodied creatively by this song. 

Chaos gives way to Clarity as we move into the back half of this EP, and it’s an instant moment of cleansing as ‘Clarity’ begins with its ethereal intro. We breathe a sigh of relief as the comforting frequencies lull us into a calmer state of mind, feeling the energy subtly building through a thick atmosphere of hope before a powerful moment of silence. Perhaps illanthropy’s most emotionally evocative song to date, ‘Clarity’ truly embodies its namesake: that feeling of spaciousness and grounded optimism which cuts through the swirling chaos. The eyes instinctively close down as we allow ourselves to surrender and melt into the sound, shifting our attention inward. 

The final piece of this puzzle maintains the Clarity previously established, and takes us even further to show us the Light.. Where It Should Be. This is the 3rd collaboration between @illanthropymusic and @WiZ0, and it hits a much different vibe than their other collabs. ‘Light Where It Should Be’ opens us up to the glimmering possibilities that arise through clarity, with a more chilled out, dream-like feel that progresses through melty pulsations to drive us toward motivated action.
