This June, ascendant Russian record producer THIR13EN returns to Australian drum and bass powerhouse
ProtoCode with his first drop of 2021: his first EP, Desecrated Village.

First appearing on the label last autumn with his thrilling debut single “Jackin” / “19 By 6”, the
Moscow-based talent has since gone from strength to strength, guesting on German institution Subplate
Recordings with the sparse, minimal two-tracker “Deactivated” / “Vital Signs” and earning endorsements
from the likes of Bass Portal and RTR FM. Drumming up a loyal following with his intricate, yet potent
approach to production, THIR13EN has turned his hand to everything from neurofunk to dancefloor D&B
with ease—with his latest outing further cementing his status as a versatile beatmaker over the course of
four high-octane cuts.

The Desecrated Village EP’s opener, “Mob Pasta”, utilises a clamouring combination of sampled raps,
formant snarls and busted, metallic percussive strikes, culminating in a truly raucous affair. “Complainer”,
meanwhile, is a tightly programmed triumph, its detailed, techstep-leaning arpeggios leading into gritty,
yet pared-back crescendos with an irresistibly funky underlying groove. The project’s namesake,
“Desecrated Village”, is a comparatively cinematic but equally turbulent number, with the fledgling artist’s
penchant for sampling shining through in the form of spoken-word excerpts. Last up is “For Today”, a
lighter concoction anchored on a saccharine topline, rugged, rolling basslines and twinkling synth plucks
which showcases a markedly different side to THIR13EN.

Find the EP exclusively on Beatport and Spotify from 7 June; it’s set to reach the full range of outlets a
fortnight later on 21 June 2021.

Opening with the eerie spookiness of a crypt, the dark, synth chord progressions lead a path to glassy hats and skeletal shuffling breaks before dropping into unrestrained, bouncing, ratcheting bass fluctuations. Spiralling distorted synth hits and a viciously snappy, spatially dimensioned drum pattern takes you through a porthole to the darkest back channels of DNB.

Standing for five years of innovation, the ‘Go Nen’ LP from Santoku represents half a decade spent by its label head crafting its most innovative releases. And alongside another game changing compilation, Logam has offered up fourteen brand new records which will signify why they’ve become such a revered icon within drum & bass, from the UK to the US. The LP also stands as a defining moment within the label’s evolution, drawing from their roster o a hugely diverse list of artists to present the whole colour wheel which has enabled Santoku to garner such a widely acclaimed reputation.

Whether it’s the neuro-infused cuts of Mean Teeth, or the impenetrable production standard of Mayhem and figurehead Logam, their next ‘Go Nen’ sampler highlights a host of musicality which is displayed throughout. The best way for an album of this calibre to open is with the first collaboration between Logam & Mayhem ‘Centuria’, but it moves forward across a twisted skeleton. Amoss takes on ‘Centuria’ and brings it into a darker realm, nodding to the previous releases which have held Santoku in such high regard. Also featuring on the LP are brand new selections from the likes of Uttersounds, who offers up the pounding riddim ‘Size Up’. Sequential’s ‘Mass Transfer’ alludes to the contemporary digital era drum & bass has found itself developing in whilst Symplex & Camel jump on board for the understated yet melodic ‘Twilight’. Celebrated American newcomer ‘Des McMahon also makes an appearance with a switch up of ‘Dopamine’, presenting a carefully packaged VIP and Kodin adds his tearaway track ‘Valetudinarian’. Todd Buchler, Pish Posh & HammerZz add their sonic delivery ‘Fuego’, which plays to its namesake with hard-hitting drum patterns and crafted hooks. Then for the last exclusive, you’re introduced to Logam & Roger’s ‘Emrys’, the perfect manifestation of what Logam inherited with Santoku’s legacy.

This LP will sit pride of place within the label’s history and they continue to push the boundaries with every release. The ‘Go Nen’ compilation clearly shows that, creating a dynamic and versatile track listing which will further define the imprint’s worth within a colossal dance music market.

The forthcoming LP from The Clamps and Kosen Productions isn’t just a collection of records which the French artist has spent months perfecting. It’s also a colossal look into the soundscape which such a high-calibre artist has at their disposal. Stretching across fifteen tracks, between drum & bass and garage, The Clamps focuses around the insanity that is stretching itself across the contemporary world and how he’s helped to define this sonically through each one of his records. There’s also a host of sci-fi inspired cuts which add to the LP’s explosive themes. From the already revealed record ‘LHS 1140b’, with a name that’ll resonate for any space fans, right through to the hard-hitting throws of ‘End of an Era’, there’s a taste to suit every palette throughout every expertly composed record. 

After already setting an enviable standard with the undeniably heavyweight standards on tracks like ‘Looking for Trouble’ alongside the notorious Nuklear MC, standalone offerings such as ‘Mankind’ and ‘30a #3a-23 Happiness’ peddle an unforgettable level of engineering whilst also pushing through a cinematic backdrop. Then a range of collaborations follow in their wake, including ‘Astronauts’ alongside Impak, as well as Snotrocket for ‘Friends in the Hood’. Merikan also joins the fray with ‘Fast Way’. 

The pace is continued to be set with ‘Cattle Mutilation’, whilst Mizo and The Clamps join forces for the meticulously sequenced drums of ‘Time Pressure’. ‘Medina’ pulls you through its half-time madness whilst adding to the LP’s strident versatility, which is followed in quick succession by ‘Soul of the Abyss’ with its throbbing LFOs. The Clamps and NickBee then merge their collective talents for ‘Addicted’, with its more old-school underpinnings. ‘The First and the Last’ platforms the creeping atmospherics which characterises many pieces of The Clamps’ sonic artillery, whilst ‘End of an Era’ draws the album to a close on a cataclysmic breakdown which takes you deep into the belly of the beast. ‘End of an Era’ alludes to The Clamps’ hardcore roots, whilst paying homage to the new foundations he’s laid down through his new music and Kosen Productions.
