Camila Milieme has been playing techno long enough to experience a few of its boom-and-bust cycles. Starting off in Brazil in the late '90s with the kind of rippling, tooly techno you'd expect from that era, Milieme lost interest once things started going minimal and took a break from techno to take up studying instead. By the time she checked back in, the genre had taken a turn closer to the stuff she used to play, so she packed up her bags and moved to Berlin, where she's become an indispensable part of the techno scene. 

As The Lady Machine, Milieme has released on Mote-Evolver and also runs her own label, Unterwegs, with UK producer Decka. As you'll hear on her RA Podcast, she prefers a classicist (yet, still, modern) style of techno that mixes toughness with texture and detail. With plenty of unreleased tracks from her cohort and tracks from British Murder Boys, Jeff Mills, Dave Clark and Christian Wunsch, this is a timeless techno mix for heads from any generation, from the '90s to the '20s.

Boris joins for DifferentSound Podcast #210.

Boris is kind of a charismatic, multifunctional weapon in the Berlin club life. His musical roots reach back to the mid 80s. When he visited New York he absorbed the unique spirit of the seminal club Paradise Garage. From the Club’s mentor Larry Levan. Boris learned to believe in his musical intuition as well as a broad musical spectrum, which nowadays ranges from Disco, Hi-NRG, Post-Punk and (Kraut-) Rock to House and Techno, all of which Boris loves to throw into one set. “Music was most important for Levan. He was uncompromising and he knew how to convey it. That’s what I’m trying to achieve, too, when I’m djing.”

Many years later, Boris became a resident at Panorama Bar’s first incarnation in Berlin, where he was able to build a loyal following by playing long sets lasting until noon. “The crowd is always a lot more receptive for music at the end then at the beginning. That’s when I rather have the opportunity to present unusual stuff and that’s when I’m able to let my feelings run freely.”

After the old OstGut/Panorama Bar closed in 2003, Boris played in almost every club in Berlin, but when the follow up club Berghain opened its doors in 2004, he quickly focused on playing out here again. From 2005 till 2010 he had another musical platform, as he was taking care of the label Careless Records as an A&R. As a DJ, he is not exactly keen on refining a certain genre, but rather to push music with a certain twist.

This mix was recorded live from Reaktor's Katharsis event in 2017.  For those that don't know, Katharsis happens once a year and is dedicated to the faster, harder and more industrial side of techno.  This was my entire 3 hour set from that night.

Over the last few years we have built a steady relationship doing events together and sharing our passion for this music.  We are teaming up once again for ADE 2018 and releasing this mix as a thank you to all our followers and supporters.

In 2012, Fahad Ahmad had already been touring internationally for eight years as part of a DJ/production duo, but when he stepped out on his own as Measure Divide he truly found his voice as a DJ and producer of intelligent, uncommon techno. Simultaneously, the Karachi-born artist launched an events brand, Format, and went on to single-handedly revive the techno scene in his adopted city, Toronto, over the following decade.
 
As a DJ, Ahmad has played everywhere from Berghain to Tresor to Under Club to Boiler Room Toronto. Under the Format banner, he has performed alongside and hosted some of the biggest names in techno, including Jeff Mills, Ben Sims, Perc and Paula Temple, and his productions have been supported by the likes of Ben Klock, Blawan, Cleric and Rodhad. 

But Ahmad has never chased the limelight, and is uninterested in putting out by-the-numbers techno, instead designing nearly every element of each track himself. There’s playfulness and experimentation in his unconventional arrangements, united by a fondness for crunch and distortion and an unwavering attention to detail. 

In 2021, after shelving his solo work for a period, Ahmad launched the new era of Measure Divide with his strongest music to date in the Green Parallel and Evidence of a Rhythmic Pattern EPs on Manchester label Clergy.

Meanwhile, his Format events brand continues to go from strength to strength, recently booking the likes of Blawan, Stef Mendesidis, Daria Kolosova, SPFDJ, Randomer, Setaoc Mass, and celebrating its 9th anniversary in February with a party headlined by Héctor Oaks. 

In an industry in which egotistic and mercenary personalities are all too common, Ahmad’s steady, humble approach is a breath of fresh air. Driven by his passion for the music above all else, and for facilitating experiences that allow others to enjoy it, he is a true linchpin of Toronto’s techno scene, bringing the best of the world to the city and showing the best of the city to the world.
