The fourth and final instalment of Hospital Records’ popular VA EP series is upon us. ‘Future Symptoms Vol. 4’ rounds off the 2021 release streak with four fresh cuts with some of the most exciting acts emerging to the forefront of drum & bass. This time around expect a full spectrum showcase from Dutta, Viridity, Son, Hallow and xia - the sounds of the next generation.

Opening on a high note, Dutta brings the energy with his latest bouncing roller ‘Set A Level’. Skittery synths and a ruthless bassline showcase his signature sound which he is quickly carving out a name for himself with. His prior experience is not to be left unnoticed, with releases under his belt on Serum & Benny V’s Souped Up Recordings, DnBAllstars and Informal, Dutta is quickly rising to the top.

Hospital Records’ Women In Drum & Bass mentee for 2021 Viridity steps up for track two with a beautifully dark drum & bass stepper featuring her very own vocals on top of her meticulous production skill. Warm your speakers up and get ready for a slew of immersive soundscapes which demonstrate the Bristol-based multi-talented musician’s artistic ability. When she’s not in the studio you’ll be able to find Viridity tearing up stages at club nights and festivals, as well as garnering support from the scene’s biggest publications including UKF.

Son’s ‘Over’ journeys down into the deeper avenues of liquid drum & bass as he marks his debut release in style with a delicately crafted piece of 174BPM mastery. Lose yourself amongst airy pads, sombre vocal chops and crisp breakbeats which seamlessly infuse into a collective stream of soulfulness. It’s safe to say this is a promising debut and the start of something special for Son.

Heading over across the pond to Boston, Massachusetts you’ll be able to find the ambient electronic prodigy that is Hallow. With an impressive selection of music already available to listen to, their Hospital Records debut sees them team up with the stunning vocals of xia who’s also flying the flag for US drum & bass. With the duo no strangers to collaborating, their initial pairing entitled ‘A Walk In The Woods’ was first scouted in Mitekiss’ production feedback streams and received instant support from London Elektricity. ‘Dappled Light’ is a gorgeous follow-up with dreamlike vocals and uplifting instrumentation.

Rounding off the final edition of their widely loved Future Symptoms EP series, Hospital Records have proudly shone a light on and nurtured some of the scene’s most prosperous talents. This track started while I was in a very dark place, it was one of the very few times I've been able to write anything at all while depressed, especially to this degree. I basically wrote the first minute or so very messily and then went to bed. The next day I went back to it and liked the idea, so I cleaned it up a bit and posted it in my discord server in a WIPs channel. Not long afterwards, a good friend of mine told me he really liked the idea, like REALLY liked the idea- even saying it's one of his favorite things of mine that I've made thus far. That was definitely it was a bit of a wake up call and I knew I was sitting on something special. I knew it was a rather strange and unique idea and from then on I embraced the track being worn, imperfect.... troubled, even. Every element of the song has gone through some sort of processing to make it imperfect and give it life, whether it be tapes, tubes, granular mangling, etc. It grew into exactly the feeling I was going for, it had just the right amount of life and musicality to it while being messy....in a good way.

This song was for me. It's almost like finishing it helped to heal the wounds that it came from in the first place.

Etherwood proudly unveils his outstanding third studio album ‘In Stillness’. Forged deep in the Nordic wilderness, this 15 track LP sees an exceptional producer return at the very top of his game.

By finding solace in Finnish solitude Etherwood has undoubtedly created his finest body of work. Featuring singles ‘Fire Lit Sky’ and ‘Bear’s Breeches’, the album is a pensive and raw tale filled with honest lyrics and moving music. Providing some of the most awe-inspiring and poignant drum & bass that Med School has released to date.

Title track ‘In Stillness’ sets the tone, walking a blissful line of Etherwood’s own vocal stylings and angelic melodies. ‘Climbing’ is a further homage to his forte as both a songwriter and producer where atmospheric amens twinned with soaring pads bring an elegance that few other can master.

‘Lay Your Armour Down’ is a stunning sensation of vocal chops and distinguished breakbeat as well as ‘Frozen Grass’, that brings a wave of warmth with gentle keys and soothing songwriting.

The tranquil and mysterious Finnish wilderness coupled with total isolation fuelled his inspiration. It was through this detachment that he was truly free to pursue his art in the purest form. As is portrayed through the words of Etherwood’s favourite scholar Arthur Schopenhauer.
