Imagine you’re on holiday, suns out, you’re walking along the beach.
The smell of the ocean fills your nostrils. 
But - what’s that? 

At the front of it all is the raw, briny tang of the sea, like saltwater left too long in a warm bucket. 
Then comes the sharp, metallic edge of blood and scales, it’s almost surgical. 
There’s a wet, fleshy musk from piles of gutted fish and shrimp, mingling with the sour-sweet fermentation of shellfish and crushed crustaceans.

Undercutting everything is the dank rot of yesterday’s scraps, soaked into the wooden tables and drains, mixing with bleach or disinfectant in a futile effort to overpower it.

It’s not just unpleasant—it’s alive, almost aggressive. It doesn’t whisper. 
It grabs you by the throat and says: 

this is what death smells like when it's still on ice.
