A silversword is a flower that grows in volcanic cinder on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Known for its sword-like succulent leaves covered with silver hairs, they are able to resist high winds and cold temperatures as well as heat and dehydration from the Sun.

A subduction is the sideways and downward movement of the edge of a plate of the earth's crust into the mantle beneath another plate. Subduction zones are sites that are known for high volcanic activity and earthquakes.
