'Lost Child' was originally composed by Megan in April 2012. However, because of the personal emotions behind this song for her, she created a slightly different version and called it: “Gentle Tranquility and Reflection” which can be found at:

Megan then collaborated with Lee Lucas on this song and it was transformed into what is now known as “Arctic Ice”:  "http://soundcloud.com/megsmusicjourney/lee-lucas-megan-mccarthy"  

This new version sparked the interest of John Styles, and all three started collaborating on this song further, [John, Lee and Megan]. During this process John also wanted to make some changes on the GentleTranquility song.

During a subsequent and long conversation about the original composition by Megan: "Lost Child", Megan told John what her initial idea and personal feelings were behind this song, and why she didn’t upload the original version and also changed the title to 'Gentle Tranquility..

John and Megan then decided to work on her original idea, which helped John to create this arrangement of this song track, and they continued working on her very first idea “Lost Child”.

While John worked on Megan's original “Lost Child”, three different versions, were created, including -  

1. The version you are hearing right now, - 'Lost Child' [rearranged/new instrumentation]

2. A completely new song titled: “Dance of the Northern lights” by both John and Matt Baker at:

3. “Arctic Ice Melting” which also needed to be slightly changed from “Arctic Ice”. This also involved Lee Lucas adapting his tracks, with the final song being a collaboration between John Styles, Matt Baker, Lee Lucas & Megan McCarthy. This will be released a little later as a second part to 'Arctic Ice'.

Lost Child - John Styles, Matt Baker & Megan McCarthy

This song is a collab between Megan McCarthy, John Styles and Matt Baker, where John and Matt created an orchestral movement incl. guitar and synth tracks around Megan’s piano solo (read Megan’s description below), and modified some slight mistakes on her piano play (at Megans request). Megan’s original description why she made this song: 

This is a piano solo and originally created for someone I love dearly, whom, after going through some difficulties, found himself surrounded by people, yet was very alone and lonely. I wanted to create something for him, so that he could know that he was never alone, and convey the sadness that this loneliness can entail, but also, to try and portray 'hints of dancing' or hope.

There is a difference between being 'alone' and 'lonely'. Everyone experiences both to a degree at some points in their lives, some more than others. Being 'alone' does not always mean that one feels 'lonely', and one can take 'time out' or feel at peace within themselves. 

Likewise, feeling 'lonely', does not always mean that a person is 'alone' and they may be surrounded by people, yet can still feel a sense of deep loneliness.

Originally titled: 'Thinking of You', I wanted to broaden what this song tried to reveal through emotion, for anyone who experiences such, with an understanding of, and empathy for, what it can feel like to be both alone and lonely in this world. Sadness can dominate, hope can be diminished, but throughout such times, there may be glimpses of hope and changes for the better in a journey towards feelings of greater inner peace and acceptance.

Sometimes all it takes, is for one person to show that they care, and to be there, in any way that they can, when it matters the most.

This is what this relatively simple song hoped to present, almost raw emotion, and not 'perfection' in technical proficiency, and it particularly reflects in a way, an old adage I love (or words to this effect):

No matter how we may feel at times in life, if ever we feel lonely, and perhaps without hope, we need to know that we are never truly alone, and whilst sad in nature, I hope that the small 'dances of hope' shine through, and for those who listen, to know that someone is thinking of you xx

Never Alone (Orchestrated Vsn) - John Styles, Matt Baker & Megan McCarthy

Its all about holding onto your dream, in this case, music, when times seem toughest. 'Emotional Playing ......'

Do you ever suffer 'musician's block'? Have you ever felt inadequate? Have you been stuck for ideas, or tried to create and nothing seems to come out? Its a 'war' inside one's own mind.  Perfectionism, lack of time, 'I'm not good enough' …. excuses abound …. eventually negative feelings can creep in  and override that 'dream', whatever it may be, [in this case music]. Frustration can creep in and 'musician's block' rears its ugly head.

Such thoughts may be reinforced, as one gets out of practice and the skills one gained eventually weaken ….. one feels like they need to start all over again; just as I did, when poor health intervened in my 'journey' and I felt that no progress had been made; that I had to start all over again; the 'fun' had been lost. …………….. My original goal: to enjoy, to escape, to heal, and to feel with music - my outlet-  had become a source of frustration. Maybe others can relate to such feelings?

Musicians are often described as quite emotionally sensitive people, whom are able to push out such emotions into, and through their music -  and it is these internal feelings that make a difference - it doesn't have to be 'perfect' - it is a journey of story-telling and of transporting ourselves and others away. This was my 'journey' and journeys can be 'rocky roads'.  

Musicians are story tellers with music, and not just with words - and it doesn't need to be 'perfect', creativity can never be 'perfect'.
- we feel and inject  pain, anger, sadness, happiness, and beauty, we reveal the emotions into the world of sound, transporting ourselves and other people into this 'world', often transcending what is 'technically correct' - yes, technique  is important too, but we try to bring it from the heart as well.

Music is my outlet. Yours too?

Whatever one's goal is; whether its for fun or to become famous (ummmm, lol), or to feel lost and escape the world of 'reality' for awhile… it is your dream, as long as it is a passion and it remains fun 

Some dear friends on SoundCloud encouraged me to keep going and I also watched some great videos about 'emotional playing' and learning how to relax into one's music without being overly self-critical. What also inspired me, in knowing that I would never become a 'concert great' :-), ... was that some great composers who achieve such passion and connect through 'emotional playing', are also famous for bad technique and playing wrong notes :-)

So - This is my renewed attempts - its a - Megs 'starting' again piece, a WIP [work in progress] and it brought me great comfort to know that I could once again, sit down at the piano and play at least; to rediscover the energy and satisfaction. To learn to be kinder on myself, to be patient and to know that we don't have to be 'perfect'  in creativity

- and most importantly to have fun in doing so! :-)

Hold Onto The Dream - Megs McCarthy (Producer: John Styles)

This track, 'Sadness', is our first collab together and has a very special meaning for the both of us. 

NEW SC PROJECT: However, it is also part of a new and exciting project, entitled the:

 -  "IMAGINATIONS & COLLABORATIONS" SoundCloud Community Challenge

which we would love your involvement in, so please take the time to read this rather long description below if you want to know more and/or wish to be involved :-)

This track, 'Sadness', by Melotone and Megs McCarthy,  is Part 2 of this overall project.

Two of the unique and best parts of the SoundCloud community, among other things, is the opportunity to communicate and collaborate with others, create new friendships based on mutual interests and passions; and to express ourselves and our emotions, through our music and our imaginations. So many beautiful creations have come about through these features and talents …..  and thus, an idea was sparked by Megan following discussions with John Styles and The Subwave Network, UK

** HOW IT BEGAN ….

Following these lengthy discussions about production techniques and the value and power of midi in creating tracks, The Subwave Network used this opportunity to learn more about midi and used the midi file of a simple piano improvisation by Megan McCarthy, to create his own interpretation of it. 

The result was a wonderful outcome, a complete transformation of a simple solo piano improvisation > into an electronic ambient style piece. It was originally a piano track which was never going to 'see the light of day' or be published in its current form, because it was created, at the time, by Megan sitting at the piano, just 'playing around' feeling a little despondent and sad, after an unsuccessful attempt on a prior piano track. ……..  the idea evolved further ……. 

** WHAT IF ……

What if others could also use this very same midi file of the original piano improvisation, basic as it was, and develop Variations on One Theme - i.e. their own interpretation of it, using the power of imagination and collaboration? Wouldn't it be wonderful if new and different variations could come about from just one simple midi track using each musician's unique talents and abilities!?

This quickly came into fruition with 2 more people quickly taking part, transforming the original piano piece [midi] once again into quite different pieces again. All were based on the same theme/midi piano improv, but all have their own distinct touch and feel. We now have even more interest of people joining in [see below for guidelines].

If interest continues, especially with a 'SET 2', eventually a SC group and FB page may be created, starting with coordination by Melotone and Strange Meat, including additional and different piano compositions for people to select from in creating their own interpretations/variations from the one midi file [these midi files will also submitted by other SoundClouders]. Yes, there are midi files out there already to buy, or import, but the value inherent here, is that the midi file is 'human' and developed specifically for this SC Community Challenge, developed for you and your individual styles  and special talents :-)

** BASIC GUIDELINES: 

As this 'Imaginations & Collaborations" Community Challenge develops, some clearer information in PDF or text format will also be sent to guide you along with the music files, on what is involved in the project, including the title and upload process.

What is most important is that there are NO RULES, except one,  and that is, ….. you must use the existing midi file which will be sent to you, as the primary basis/theme for interpretation of your final piece, YOUR Variation :-)

There are no genre restrictions. Any style accepted. You can change the tempo, cut, copy, paste parts, change the instruments, add more instruments, add vocals and FX. You can keep all, or part of the original piano or even completely remove the piano 'sounds' and replace with your own sounds. You might even want to create a piano 'duet' of sorts. It can be as simple or as complex as you like.

Your interpretation can be ambient, electronica, trance, dubstep, techno, IDM, experimental, new age, orchestral, pop, rock, acoustic, name it, there are no restrictions - again, add as many or as little instruments and FX as you like, as long as you continue to use the original midi file as the primary basis for your interpretation and 'variation'/mix. 

We also look forward to any feedback and/or if anyone has any additional ideas to build on this SC community challenge.  Lots or promotional opportunities abound too.

Welcome to our latest track 'Sorrow' by Matt Baker, John Styles & Megan McCarthy - Please read Matt's description below:

This track is an original piano composition from Megan originally entitled 'Sadness', which John & I were working on as part of the new'Imaginations & Collaborations' project with Megan.

Unfortunately, during our writing I received terrible news that my father was unwell, which deeply affected me, as he has only just recovered from another illness. I was so very sorry to learn of his illness and felt so terribly helpless as I just wanted to reach out and heal him. Working on this helped me to cope and I realised that my feelings had turned to 'Sorrow'.

Sorrow is an emotion, feeling, or sentiment. Sorrow 'is more "intense" than sadness...it implies a long term state'. At the same time 'sorrow' is not necessarily unhappiness, but perhaps a feeling that suggests a degree of resignation...

'In terms of attitude, sorrow can be said to be half way between sadness (accepting) and distress (not accepting)

I spoke to my friends about this and was very honoured that they felt this track could be dedicated to my father, to wish him strength and a speedy recovery.

Sorrow - Matt Baker, John Styles & Megan McCarthy

I don't know why or understand, and  whilst I wasn't raised with any form of religion, I've always felt there is some sort of  'reason' in this life. It gave me a sense of security, purpose and meaning. However, during a time which I consider a 'living hell' while 3 months in hospital, fighting to live, and with people needlessly dying around me, I suddenly felt a loss of that 'reason', feeling very alone'.

Everything became frightening chaos. It all came down to bad luck and there was nothing, no meaning, no reason, nothing I could do, or find faith in. It was only through short visits from some friends and knowing that my mother [and dad and stepmother] would see me, that gave me the will to fight to live. 

It took a long time to come to terms with this, the loss of my 'safety net' of sorts. Gradually, those memories faded, though that loss of 'purpose' and sense of 'meaning' stayed with me.

I'm sure that we can find a 'reason' for everything in our lives if we wanted to, but mostly in hindsight. For instance - 'what if this didn't happen', I wouldn't be here in this place now …..or … 'This happened, which led to this and that resulted in where i am today' - supposedly 'chance' events, which accumulated into where we are now. But only this can be seen in hindsight on a conscious level.

So is there a 'reason', is there more to life? We may never know, but the sense, belief, or even just a feeling that there is, can bring us great comfort; many take comfort in religion, being brought up in that environment. 

Is the 'meaning' the 'journey'?

One day, I met a woman about the same age as my mother, by 'pure chance' in a store. I was looking at a poster with a message from daughters to mums, wishing I wouldn't feel so alone. She watched me staring at the words on this poster and started to talk. 

Her daughter, who was my age, had died,  and I also had a life-threatening illness and faced death many times, often needing my mum, needing a sense of meaning and of being needed perhaps; and the woman also saw a sense of me wanting to be there for my mum and be a part of her life, when I often couldn't.

Surprisingly, this woman spoke of her wish to have been a better mother. I reassured her, there is no 'magic wand', no perfection, only that she had chosen to be there and her daughter was a part of her life. 

Our talk was deep and long, I remember it all, what was said, what she looked like, the overall sense of just 'being' with each other in a time of need, strangers, yet not. She tried to take comfort, along with her remaining daughter, that one day she will see her oldest daughter again, and that she was with her always now; it was her way of finding sense, comfort and 'meaning to such a seemingly needless loss. 

Both of us fought to hide the tears welling up in our eyes.  She said, I don't usually talk to strangers in the middle of a store, especially about something so personal and hard. .... Neither do I.

Was this merely a chance encounter?
Then she said - 'Maybe this happened for a Reason'

We looked into each others' eyes and parted, each understanding the other, each wanting to help, but also knowing that by merely meeting by 'chance' or perhaps - by 'reason' - that  this was enough and suddenly that overwhelming sense of chaos I was overwhelmed by in that hospital, was diminished.

I still don't know if everything happens for a reason, but that encounter seemed like more than mere chance. I still fear chaos that surrounds us, we all fear change and uncertainty; I still fear that maybe my life will have had no reason but that 'chance' talk had deep meaning

In times like this, i like to think of the phrase:
.....   "the meaning of life; is to give life meaning'

I hope that this speaks to you in some way.

Everything Happens For A Reason - Megs McCarthy (Producer: John Styles)

Once again, I've been away, missing SoundCloud and so many wonderful people and music, piano untouched until the Christmas season arrived.

I have memories of wonderful Christmases as a child, with real Xmas pine trees, the smell of fresh pine leaves was beautiful, gorgeous decorations, pink sugar mice spread around the house, and the magical anticipation of Xmas Eve, waiting to jump up onto one's parent's bed, …. its XMAS TIME!! :-)

I see the decorations now, in other places, the beautiful and bright colours, sounds and smells, all that it represents, I hear of people's Xmas plans and family and friends, I hear of stress, I hear of joy and anticipation, especially families with children - such wonders.

Yet often we can forget that there are many people that do not have this joy, where the Xmas spirit seems to be for 'others'. So many lonely and/or unwell people, wishing to be a part of things, but unable to, for various reasons. Xmas can also bring back painful memories one just doesn't want to remember, and while the 'anticipation' of Xmas is still there, the actual day can be very lonely and sad.

Thus, this song was created, 'Lonely Seasons' in dedication to, and to remember and think of those who were alone on Xmas and New Year. Yes, it is sad. at a time when there should be joy, but it is not mean't to be depressing, ……….. 

… for there is always hope that things will change and the magic of Christmas will return, and it will always stay in our memories.

Lonely Seasons No.I (2013) - Megs McCarthy

After a strange dream the other night, I felt a strong need to express the feelings which stayed with me when I awoke. Do you ever wake and cannot seem to shake the feelings evoked by deep dreams for some time? It is a strange feeling. Hence I went to my piano and just 'played' until the early hours of the morning, influenced by the night's atmosphere when the city was quiet and many people slept.This piece was the result, a strange sensation of longings, strange dreams and times, a sense of being trapped in endless cycles, patterns of behaviour, and questions about life itself. 

What resulted was an imperfect improvisation containing one main theme repeating and encircling itself with few melodic changes, cyclic, in nature but with different and subtle changes throughout.  An almost eery sensation and something quite different indeed :-)

Endless Cycles - Megs McCarthy

This is a bit different from my usual 'style', whatever that is :-), but I felt inspired by a dear friend, Milco Huisman [a brilliant and talented flute player], and said that I would try to create a piece whilst I have lost partial hearing [temporary we hope!], and see what the outcome was. This is it. I can 'hear' it, but only just enough to know the feeling I wanted to convey, though not even sure if I did this

I played by feeling more than hearing and just 'prayed' that volumes, mixing and sounds were ok, LOL

So a BIG Thank You Milco! :-)

(and also for the wonderful support from Erik Tavis [Melotone], Ian Gray [The Subwave Network, UK], Miles [Strange Meat] and of course John Styles [OneVision CrossWorlds], who have also offered to help out,  while I either adapt to this hearing impairment, or get it back - thank you so much, and others, too many to mention!) :-)

Moths to A Flame - Megs McCarthy

Something different again from my last 'uplifting piece' [Moths to a Flame], this one slower,  more simple and gentle …… and in progress [I think!] hehe ….

The night was silent at the start of a another heatwave here in Australia, houses still warm despite the coming of relief and 'cool' air over the last few nights. The only sound was that of the portable air conditioner struggling to fill the room with cold air. On nights such as this, during the worst times, one dreads to leave that 'cold' room to enter into rooms where a furnace seems to envelope one.

Despite the silence, I couldn't sleep. Feeling unwell, drained from heat, worried about someone dear to me, I felt a strong urge to play the piano. A melody of sorts had formed in my mind, a melody to soothe the soul. So I pushed past that pain and mental barrier which was telling me  'I can't get up', and I got to the piano. Darkness surrounded me except for the gleam of lights from the street lamps outside my window, …..The only other light came from the glow of the computer screen spilling out onto my piano.

So I closed my eyes and just gently played in that silent warm night,… to my surprise it sounded soothing and delicate, my fingers seemed to hit the right notes and a gentle melody and harmony was created - after a difficult patch with my music, I was surprised at how my fingers effortlessly 'found' what I 'felt',….. I was so engrossed with what was happening, how calm it felt, how much joy I was gaining from playing, thinking that maybe things would be ok for the person I care for,  that I couldn't pull myself away to simply press the record button. 

My heart sank.

Could I play it again, play an improvisation, the way in which had just been created from nothing, or from within? To soothe my soul and the person I cared about so deeply, and hopefully others too.  I tried to forget that it was recording and ignore that darn metronome which I had forgotten to turn off - it throws me, hindering the free-flow nature and freedom of an improvisation

I continued to play, attempting to recapture this melody once again, and this is the result after several problems with my DAW and it not capturing the recording properly.  No, its not the same as my first attempt, no, it doesn't seem to flow as well, or find some of those harmonies that just 'came' so effortlessly from within the first time……  …..simple and imperfect though this piece may be, it still portrayed a sense of the gentleness I felt, ….. in playing ……. "quietly in the night" …. hoping that my dear friend would be alright ….

Quietly In The Night - Megs McCarthy

There are times in our lives when we yearn for simplicity; when things seem to overwhelm. After [and continuing] ill-health and hospitals, I have felt this need for simplicity, especially after not being able to play the piano for some time, my love and therapy.

Thus, I woke in the middle of the night, with no ideas, just a need to get to my piano and try to get my feelings out 

It is a simple piece to reflect that need and yearning for simplicity, and which is reflected in the title. I felt sorrow, yet soothed.

I needed to do this, not only for myself, but also for some close friends undergoing some difficulties, and others too, who desire a moment of simplicity in their lives; to forget for awhile the burdens we all experience from time to time.

Please excuse any errors, being an improvisation, and I am hoping to get strong enough to be back online more often than I have recently.

I have missed so many of you and your music so much xx

Yearning for Simplicity - Megs McCarthy

Most of us have felt betrayed in life and its hard to talk about. We feel hurt, and find it hard to know sometimes whom to trust, but we should never let it close our hearts….

I thus felt a need to play and a very slow and sombre, imperfect and simple improvisation came about; errors and all  …… [perhaps I may try to improve on this].

 I just needed to get some feelings out …. 

Though it hurts, we can learn and become strong. Keep your hearts open <3

The Road to Hope - Improv by Megs McCarthy

Wishing you all a Wonderful, Magical and Merry Christmas and a New Year. I hope that this time is a festive and loving one :-)     At times like these, however, it can be good to remember those who are alone on such a magical day as Christmas and New Years; to try and understand what it may be like;….  and for those who are feeling alone, to remember - that you don't have to feel alone.

I have memories of wonderful Christmases as a child, with real Xmas pine trees. There was a beautiful smell of fresh pine leaves, and the rooms were brightened with gorgeous decorations, pink marzipan sugar mice spread around the house, and the air filled with the magical anticipation of Xmas Eve, waiting to jump up onto one's parent's bed, …. its XMAS TIME!! :-)
Its different now, and I see the decorations, in other places, the beautiful and bright colours, sounds and smells, all that it represents, I hear of people's Xmas plans and family and friends, I hear of stress, I hear of joy and anticipation, especially families with children - such wonders.
Yet often we can forget that there are many people that do not have this joy, where the Xmas spirit seems to be for 'others'. So many lonely and/or unwell people, wishing to be a part of things, but unable to, for various reasons. Xmas can also bring back painful memories one just doesn't want to remember, and while the 'anticipation' of Xmas is still there, the actual day can be very lonely and sad.
Thus, this song [and now series] was created - 'Lonely Seasons' - in dedication to, and to remember and think of those who are alone on Xmas and New Year. Yes, it is sad. at a time when there should be joy, but it is not mean't to be  ………..
… for there is always hope that things will change and the magic of Christmas will return, and it will always stay in our memories. There are so many out there who are alone on these festive days, but try to remember, in simply knowing this, that you are not alone and you can try to make these days the best that you can. Enjoy the small things, buy some 'xmasy' food, some cold ham, turkey and cranberry sauce, maybe even some cherries! Dress for the day or just lounge around in your PJ's  :-) Play some music; walk the cat! Play in the dirt and garden and feel the spirit in the air
Make these days YOUR days and be your own best friend :-)

Lonely Seasons No. II - Megs McCarthy

This is my submission to 'The Piano Cloud's -  'Ebony and Ivory' Challenge (initiated and hosted by Simon Reich), the first part of which involves creating a piece using only the white keys. The next part will involve only playing those black keys, yikes!   …. after a time of 'music block', I've had great joy in just playing again, and ended up with about 10 improvisations, thanks to the encouragement of some dear friends once again, thank you! (am hoping to put a more detailed description up shortly, about this piece and what it means)

As The Garden Grows - Megs McCarthy (White Keys Challenge)

This is my  submission to the second part of 'The Piano Clouds' (TPC) - 'Ebony and Ivory' Challenge (initiated and hosted by https://soundcloud.com/simon-reich), which involves creating a piece using only the black keys on the piano (yikes! hehe). The first part of the Challenge involved creating a piece using only the white keys ('As the Garden Grows'). This 'black keys'  piece was originally a piano solo improvisation, but I wanted to learn more and add some more FX and instrumentation, so I'm not sure what it is! The piano is still dominant for the Challenge, whilst I tried to incorporate a more 'ambient' mood. I'm now looking forward to listening to all the submissions for the Challenge, as I've only had a chance to listen to a few! :-) 

If you'd like to listen and give some feedback, especially given this approach to music is still relatively new to me, its always much appreciated :-) xx

Where Only Memories Remain - Megs McCarthy

This piano improvisation is for Maraisa, my sister in law, married to my 'little' brother whom I adore. She passed away only a few days ago after a long battle with poor health. She was like a shining jewel, so strong, who celebrated life until the end and who's light touched so many people. Her strength and inspiration often gave me strength. The pain and grief at losing another sister has no words, and I cry for my brother especially, and her family in Brazil, for the pain they are feeling. I will always remember your beauty Mara. You may be gone from this world, but will always remain in our hearts and memories. This is for you, your family, and the one whom you gave so much love to, my beautiful brother, your husband, Reuben. I love you both  …. and I miss you.

I want to dedicate this track to the horrors in Paris and terrorism all around the world, my heart goes out, the fear and grief …. Are we ever truly 'free'? Even from burdens when at times, we can all feel overwhelmed, trapped, overcome with, losses, fears and loneliness. 

Society can often place so many boundaries on our freedom, some more than others, and between different countries, where fear often reigns because of different beliefs and our freedoms become curtailed. 

Sadness can penetrate our very soul and the only thing to hold onto is hope and those moments of joy and 'escape' that we can find - the simple things in life, …. we can lose ourselves in music, in nature, and the garden, in friends, in strangers, in love where we can find it, we can stare at the sky in wonder and we can talk to our companions and 'furry friends'  …. and we can hope.

Even then though, such moments can be impacted by the realisation that not all moments last, and the attacks in Paris were terrible, and continue in areas around the world; many of the people were enjoying such moments of 'freedom' in Paris; many others never really experience 'freedom' as we know it.

So many burdens, still 'yearning for simplicity', and now I try to find some freedom in giving my 'baby', my little 'koala kitty', happy times while I watch her slowly deteriorate, and the tears form, as I too become overwhelmed by 'life' and try to escape into music  ……. 

But i know that we can rise again, that there will always be such moments, when we can find 'true freedom' again  ….. <3

When Are We Truly Free - Megs McCarthy

Our thoughts and inner talk are with us constantly, driving our emotions, as our emotions drive our thoughts. Sometimes this can be a peaceful place, at other times, more reflective, or sad yet filled with hope. Our thoughts can be wonderful things, yet if we begin to 'drown'  in them they can be a danger as we can become overwhelmed, dwell on things or worries that may not come to be, or become stuck within grief and loss which can both comfort us and hold us back. I often find myself thinking too much, and need to remember the 'moment', to stop over-analysing fear, sadness, and to focus on the peaceful and hopeful times, and one of the best ways for me to express this, is through music, as so many of you do <3 xx

Drowning In Our Thoughts - Megs McCarthy

We are, in the main, relatively social creatures. We need each other. Unfortunately, this season has been a particularly difficult time, with 3 admissions to hospital and losing so much. My heart broke and all I could and can do, just for now, is to move from 'moment' to 'moment', hoping that one of these moments will be relatively 'ok' and that such moments will become more frequent and longer-lasting. Hope is all I have and hope is what it is all about in trying to give life meaning. I have also thought of, and missed so many of you and the music. Now it is time for a brief rest …..

Those Dreams I Had - Megs McCarthy (Producer: John Styles)

Words cannot yet describe what this sombre piano improvisation means at this moment. where the music hopefully 'speaks' for itself, produced with a beautiful ambience and depth added to the piano by John Styles.  

A full Orchestral version of this piece is also in the planning ….

This music was initially inspired by watching images of terrorism and the fallout, the chaos and people running in fear  .. it was these horrifying images I saw as I played this music watching a silent TV … a reflection of so many lost opportunities for beautiful, carefree people, of those who were lost, and for the survivors, and their families and friends and the heroes who risked their lives.  These feelings were also expressed with John Styles, but I still cannot find words which are adequate enough to convey the depths of such sorrow……   Perhaps only music can achieve this

Declining health stopped me from uploading this track until now but I, and others, continue to keep going, in the belief and hope that life will change for the better  ….

It is this unknown in what may await us that inspired this piece …. but It is also this hope that we must hold onto if ever we undergo change, loss or grief in our lives…. Hope and peace within …. to continue on despite our external circumstances, for life can be filled with such joy, which we must try never to lose sight of…. even the simplest of things,… the flowers that bloom, the leaves blowing in the breeze, the singing of birds and the sun on our faces ……  to find a safe place within ourselves where we cannot be touched and where inner peace and silence holds strong …and solidarity of all helps us to carry on

What Awaits Us

What Awaits - Megan McCarthy (Producer John Styles)

This piano solo was originally created for someone I love dearly, whom, after going through some difficulties, found himself surrounded by people, yet was very alone and lonely.  I wanted to create something for him, so that he could know that he was never alone, and convey the sadness that this loneliness can entail, but also, to try and portray 'hints of dancing' or hope, as someone aptly put it (e.g. comments by @oorlab, @mrkil1o1 and others - thank you for hearing this!). (and thank you everyone for your wonderful comments, they always mean much!) :)

There is a difference between being 'alone' and 'lonely'. Everyone experiences both to a degree at some points in their lives, some more than others. Being 'alone' does not always mean that one feels 'lonely', and one can take 'time out' or feel at peace within themselves. Likewise, feeling 'lonely', does not always mean that a person is 'alone' and they may be surrounded by people, yet can still feel a sense of deep loneliness.

Originally titled: 'Thinking of You', I wanted to broaden what this song tried to reveal through emotion, for anyone who experiences such, with an understanding of, and empathy for, what it can feel like to be both alone and lonely in this world. Sadness can dominate, hope can be diminished, but throughout such times, there may be glimpses of hope and changes for the better in a journey towards feelings of greater inner peace and acceptance. 

Sometimes all it takes, is for one person to show that they care, and to be there, in any way that they can, when it matters the most.

This is what this relatively simple song hoped to present, almost raw emotion, and not 'perfection' in technical proficiency, and it particularly reflects in a way, an old adage I love (or words to this effect):

.... 'You may not 'be' the world, but you may mean the world to someone' :-)

No matter how we may feel at times in life, if ever we feel lonely, and perhaps without hope, we need to know that we are never truly alone, and whilst sad in nature, I hope that the small 'dances of hope' shine through, and for those who listen, to know that someone is thinking of you x

We all suffer loss and grief at some point in our lives. Grief is all about loss, and we all grieve in our own ways, whether it be for the loss of a life, a child, one's health, our youth, a lifestyle, a dream, sadness at the plight and suffering of others, or of lost futures.

Thank you so much for your continued support and encouragement! I truly appreciate it :-)

 I love the SC community, because it is a 'community', with the many styles of music and the inspirations and encouragement I find here for all! 

After discovering SC and hearing so much talent - I wanted to join in, but so much to learn!   I was a classically trained pianist when a youngster (now a tad rusty), who has restarted a musical journey, originally in learning the field of electronic music, and exploring piano improvisations and compositions.  However, most of my latest works have been piano-based, and am hoping to once again, learn some more electronic and even combine the two; piano and electronic ... But then again, I keep returning to the piano! hehe :)

- still exploring and not feeling bound by any rules!

A Mini Biography: Music has been a part of my life since a young child (my whole family is musical, though of different styles, with my step-father's fantastic rock-band and analog synths, bass and acoustic guitar, my mother's gorgeous Irish folk-band, autoharp and dulcimer, my brother's beautiful self-taught guitar, and my Dad's famous banjo playing) :)   

At a young age of about 5, I attempted composing my own piano works whilst begging my mother for piano lessons; and after about a year, my wish became reality and I trained for the AMEB (Australian Musical Examination Board) exams. I eventually started performing live, with amateur tours around the country area for a singing group and for theatre groups (though that was a long time ago now!). 

But eventually, I headed down a different path in academia, in getting my Bachelors degree, Masters degree and a PhD.

Now I have a chance to find this dream again, slowly but surely, as long as its fun. I also find it very therapeutic, as music can often express so much more than words can. It is a journey where time seems to have no meaning. This is a 'musical diary' of sorts, as I struggle through a difficult time in life health-wise, ... my escape .... music :-)

So, I would love it if you would follow me on this 'journey' because any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

Of course, I am also here as a Fan, and would love to find more people to listen to! There are so many wonderful, talented, and often undiscovered musicians up here, and I cannot get enough of your music! I have very eclectic tastes in music. 

My apologies too if there is ever a delay in my replies, as I can't always be here, but will try to get back to you and comments, I appreciate them so much. Hoping to find all my friends, and new ones too! ;-)
