To celebrate the 50th episode of Undercurrents, I invited a brilliant artist whom I've admired for a long time since first discovering his work as his alias Borealis 8+ years ago. He was my guest on @getting-deeper in July and he's been making music for nearly two decades. 

With releases on iconic imprints like Global Underground, Balance, Kompakt, Montreal label Archipel, plus his own imprint, Three Graces, it's an absolute honour and pleasure to present to you today, a beautiful, eclectic, cosmic, super tripped out experimental one hour trek with my very special guest -  composer, producer, visual artist, and fellow Canadian….Somfay. 🇨🇦

Over the last two years, The Black Dog have photographed their home town and the brutal architecture that sits within. This album of ambient, experimental and down-tempo work was originally conceived as an aid for the creative process but ultimately provides a soundtrack to the artworks.

We've always worked apart. For us, it's nothing new. Large online servers have been in place for years but at some stage, we always meet up while working on an album to pour over the details, tone and running order.

We create storyboards and write text to support and form the ideas. However, this process and the simple ability to sit in the same room just wasn’t possible during the pandemic. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, on this project we believe that it has helped us to capture the isolation a photographer seeks with their subject. It's an attempt at slowing down and finding something internal. When the chatter stops, the creative intentions seep through.

Music For Photographers was first created as a functional tool. For the last two years, we’ve been photographing our city and the brutal architecture that sits within the landscape. Throughout this process many mistakes had been made, resulting in many return visits to repeat work already undertaken. Rushing, aimlessly collecting and near misses are all common problems. Photography, just like any other artform, needs to be practised and the skills need to be attained. Like music, it’s a constant battle.

Something was needed to aid the art being sought.

We created Music For Photographers with two simple rules; to be void of human voices and that it should be played in full when visiting any location. Our approach to composing the music and visiting the locations evolved. It helped the whole process become a more fluid exchange of ideas and we repeated the process later while editing the photographs. The book "Brutal Sheffield" provided a full stop for the creative process, finding that perfect balance between function and form.

Music For Photographers has now become a fully functioning sigil in our creative process. Rather than just invoking, it also evokes and goes beyond being a simple function. Listen carefully and you can hear the bréton brut!

Do you believe everything you think? Should you? All thoughts have a beginning and an end. 
You may think you are suffering from the past but you cannot suffer from something that no longer exists. What you are suffering is your memory and your imagination. When you have a melancholy thought think of it as a script you are writing for a movie or a story. When you are told a story whether you believe it or not, its just a story. If it’s not in your experiences in the current moment then it has become just a story. Ask yourself what is the goal of life? Suppose you are in full ecstasy at all times, then you are not able to ask yourself what is the goal of life? Because the goal is to live and to live totally. To live totally means: to experience all aspects of life. 

Imagination, thoughts and emotions are a way to pave the way. Thoughts are not a reality, it is a way to pave the way, it makes you willing. If you give to much significance to thoughts and emotions it begins to seem like it is the real thing. What’s in your head can became a bigger reality than reality itself. Once you start believing something that is not in your experience you can become a dangerous human being. With everything that goes on in the planet these days, its seems that it is always about good vs evil, but in reality, its one person’s thought versus another person’s thought. We should be sincere with ourselves and accept what we don’t know, as something that we don’t know. 

The goal of life is to live and to live totally by experiencing all aspects of life.

The Warp Records Bleep × takeover marked the last event at our pop-up shop in Dalston. Mira Calix, Plaid and Special Request all delivered sets that were energetic, playful and ultimately; incredibly fun. This mix from Plaid starts from the off at 100% and stays there till the end. From the first kickdrum to the final squelch, this is a constant roller bursting with heart palpitating energy.  60 minutes of pure vibrancy with a breakbeat or two thrown in for good measure - fitting for a final big blow out!

No frills or faff about this set, just banger after glorious banger from Warp kingpins.
