Serendipity is a wonderful thing, and when we looked ahead in the guestmix calendar, a certain number jumped out. 303. A number synonymous with the roots of house music, which presented itself with a (somewhat obvious) opportunity to get an old friend into the series... a man who saw it all unfold before his very eyes in the 90's, and who himself excels with the execution of mixes with an underlying concept. 

Welcome to JD Twitch's ode to the Roland 303.

"The Roland 303 is a little silver box of electronics that accidentally produced the squelching sound that became the foundation of Acid House. Pioneered circa 1987 in Chicago, Acid House exploded around the world and that sound spread through electronic music creating myriad variants.

Fundamentally the 303 is instantly recognisable by its squelch sound. This squelch can be euphoric, hypnotic, joyous, uplifting, sad, dark, cheesy, silly, scary, ridiculous, psychedelic, beautiful and anthemic. This mix aims to showcase many of these shades of the squelch. It is not the greatest hits of the 303, nor is it a collection of wilfully obscure forgotten 303 jams, it's just simply a paean to the majesty and never ending sonic possibilities of the squelch. Greasy Listening : Episode 009

Three out of our first seven RISE mixes have been from Irish DJs, which definitely says something about the quality of DJs emerging from Ireland. The latest comes from @trone1234 . 

Another member of the Apartment Records roster, Tr One aka Eddie Reynolds has been releasing music for more than a decade, on labels including Apartment, Lunar Disko, 393 and most recently his album (split across two EPs) "From The Studio Of" on his own Intrinsic Rhythm.

Solid Steel (28th September) In Hour 1 we welcome Voyage label boss Andy Hart following the release of his Voyager 1 EP. He told us; "This is the first record I’ve put out in a quite some time as I’ve mainly been focusing on djing and developing the label. We’ve just finished a tour of Europe with Wax’o Paradiso, a party and group I’m involved in from Melbourne. I’m also heading on a solo tour to Asia and Australia in November, although there is a gig in Osaka at the end of this month as well as the usual Wax’o Paradiso gigs in Australia over summer. The mix is somewhat reflective of the upcoming Voyage EP we’re doing with Rings Around Saturn. He’s an incredible talent and one of the most interesting artists that has come out of Melbourne; check his aliases and collaborations sd Dan White, 2200, Bleekman and Turner Street Sound. Although he makes music across a broad spectrum, this EP is quite reserved and delicate, which are qualities I’ve tried to focus on whilst putting together records for this mix. There are some more recent bits in from Skee Mask, Lord Of The Isles and S.O.N.S as well as a track from Move D and Benjamin Brunn’s 2006 LP for BineMusic. For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

To the dedicated few and the newly dedicated, this is a celebration laced with appreciation. The cause for this - we’ve reached a modern-day milestone. We’ve made it to 30 (which is a total of about 3 in podcast years). Honestly, I never thought I'd make it to 30, but I soon came to realise how much good music is out there, and how I should use my powers for good rather evil, so here we are. 

For this momentous occasion, we have a very fitting transmission. Something that he and I have been working towards for the last two years. The man responsible for an audible gift from the gods is none other than Andy Hart himself, aka the slug face millionaire aka choices from the lake aka undies. I call Andy not only a good friend but also a good inspiration, a good breath of fresh country air, a good dose of realism and just a flat out good person. I’ve lived with him, I’ve traveled with him and I’ve shared more than a towel with him. I can comfortably say that Andy will be at my wedding, my funeral and everything in between. 

This mix is the perfect summary of the journey so far. I'd like to think we’ve explored quite a lot over the last couple of years, and I'd also like to think that there’s so much more out there. This perfectly woven galactic tapestry transcends every aspect that you think you know about most things and rewrites the rest. The culmination of many years of putting tracks aside has paid off immensely. The thought and the planning behind this mix actually baffle’s me. It’s the perfect narrative without the narrative, a story without words, a tale of triumph. I may sound a bit dramatic but you obviously haven’t listened to it yet. Just shy of 4 hours, this is the perfect soundtrack to your life in general. It transcends not only stages of the day but also stages of your mind. I'm yet to find the perfect moment/space to listen to it but I think a long drive back from a really good holiday would fit perfectly - or just a cruisey Sunday spring afternoon at home.

Just like contemporary hip-hop can feel far removed from its founding pillars (rapping, writing, b-boying & DJing) nowadays house and, more widely, dance music seem, sometimes, to get farther from, well, eliciting dancing. Under his main vehicle, his side conceptual moniker of Black Jazz Consortium or his occasional guise Anomaly, the Berlin based New Yorker Fred P. has been a quiet force channeling the very essential motion at the core of this music and culture for the last 15 years.

With influences reaching to the roots of American black music, UK’s broken beat and beyond, his unmistakably hypnotic brand of dance music is now occupying a central role in a scene over, below and parallel to the radar of marketed flavour of the week trends; one that is not looking to convince but to transmit a vision, constructing a message.

After releasing what is possibly the best house album of 2019 under Black Jazz Consortium, a slew of dancefloor movers that seem to suspend the listener in a timeless space and a series of very singular remixes, Fred P. comes back again with an incredibly soulful number for Apparel Music’s 10th anniversary double vinyl compilation.

To celebrate the release of this compilation and his contribution we asked the equally talented DJ to record a mix for us and sent a few questions to try to get some more insight into his vision and craft.
