"Being a part of this scene is already a political act." The longtime DJ discusses politics in dance music and Ex-Yugoslavia's dynamic anti-establishment creative culture.

Tijana Todorovic (AKA Tijana T) proudly hails from the Ex-Yugoslavian capital Belgrade. The Serbian city, alongside the territories now known as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia, were once under singular socialist rule that Tijana describes as a "utopian time" that fostered intense creativity and counter-cultural art and music. A liberal communist republic that didn't operate under the influence of the USSR, as many Eastern European countries did at that time, Yugoslavia gave birth to a dynamic, anti-establishment performance culture rooted in new wave, feminism and everything non-mainstream.

In her RA Exchange with senior producer Chloe Lula, Tijana reflects on how growing up in this environment irrevocably shaped her values and taste in music, as well as how the civil war—and Yugoslavia's subsequent fall—defined the period of intense fear and poverty that followed. In Serbia, techno and nightclubs became an energetic force for young people seeking solace, community and sociopolitical change. Tijana went on to work as a TV and radio journalist that fought vehemently against the war, and to break out as an artist beyond the Ex-Yugoslavian territory. She talks about her unlikely trajectory, her view on the intrinsic connection between politics in dance music, underdeveloped music markets, sobriety and more. Listen to the episode in full.

Following this year’s acclaimed singles ‘Presence’ and ‘Colors of Life’, as well as the upcoming ‘Silk & Fur’ (out September 19), ‘Aelle’ is a masterfully woven collection of tracks that balances the intensity of the dance floor with the intimacy of personal listening. Across twelve tracks, OXIA crafts an evocative sonic palette where melodies and grooves intertwine with moments of emotion, elegance, and timeless beauty.

Speaking about the upcoming album, OXIA commented: “As with my previous albums, I let my creativity run free once again, without setting limits. I wanted to bring together everything I love about electronic music – groove, melodies, emotion, intensity – and blend them with calmer, more reflective tracks”.

‘Aelle’ also highlights OXIA’s collaborative spirit, featuring contributions from long-time friends and creative partners. Faces sees him reunite with label co-founder Nicolas Masseyeff, while ‘Silk & Fur’ and ‘On The Trip’ see him team up with Yannick Baudino. The album also welcomes compelling vocal performances from Hen Wen (Calling The Sun) and Hacène (Silk & Fur).

Musically, the record flows through a rich spectrum: melodic, groove-driven tracks (Nuance, Faces), ethereal pieces laced with emotion (Calling the Sun, Saisons), and moments of deep, poignant melancholy (Aerial). The title track ‘Aelle’ and songs like ‘A Special Day’ and ‘Run’ underline OXIA’s ability to move effortlessly between the club and the heart, creating music with enduring resonance.

With ‘Aelle’, OXIA reaffirms his place at the forefront of electronic music, offering an album that is as captivating on the dance floor as it is profound in personal reflection.

About the mix..

"My last studio mix was for Resident Advisor in January and I feel like I might’ve gone a bit hard on that one and focused on tricks over tracks. This time I decided to keep it real simple. I went to a friend’s with a bag of 40 records and a few tracks on a USB and recorded it in an afternoon (then nudged some volumes in Ableton). It’s all quite trancey but in a lighter sense of the word. That beautiful time when house, trance and whatever else all seemed to cross over for a brief moment. It’s a bit lighter than what I usually get to play in the club. There are some new ones from myself and a couple of pretty hard to find tracks that will be out on a new re-issue label I’m starting this fall. Fuck the sharks."

The boys of Radial Gaze, a spicy electronic project based in St. Petersburg, Russia, make their debut on the outstanding label ESTHÉTIQUE RECORDS. Their sonority flirts with live percussions and native vocals, and the result is a colourful and enticing combination of their different and mutual influences.

"We tried to convey the complexity of the soundscape that surrounds us every day but made it so simple that you can catch this scale looking at the sun in the neck of an empty bottle", said the lads themselves to describe "Sui Generis Nomen", the track we chose to premiere, whose main characteristic is the large infusion of oriental elements.

The thumping atmosphere the tune inflicts through its lively percussion and shamanic aura is probably going to take you to hidden places in your mind. The trip established by the trance mood tends to be agitated, though. It will be hard merely to close your eyes and enjoy the tour, because "Sui Generis Nomen" is not intended to create this kind of reaction. Its goal is to make you reach a level of reverie that is only achieved through dancing and sweating hard.
