The new album 'Born A King' sees legendary Jamaican artist Sizzla at the breathtaking peak of his musical and lyrical abilities, balancing traditional roots reggae, dancehall, hiphop and global beats with all-out futuristic sounds and production. Focusing 100% of his energy on positive, uplifting and conscious lyrics, Sizzla combines his unique melodic sense and vocal delivery with some of the toughest production ever featured amongst his extensive catalogue. Australian heavyweight reggae and hip-hop producer Mista Savona (Muti Music) has pulled out all the stops, combining his flair for sampling, composition and the full utilization of a ten piece studio band to deliver a scorching 15 track selection that is easily one of the strongest albums of Sizzla’s career. 

To give some background on this project, whilst on tour in Australia we met Mista Savona, a Melbourne based producer who had just returned from Jamaica with a bag of new riddims and an almost-completed album with legendary reggae artist Sizzla. We listened to the tunes and loved the fresh new sounds and very positive feel of the album, with its uplifting messages and inspired vocal performances. Muti Music has been releasing a series of Remix EP's as we lead up to the album's May 2014 release, featuring producers at the leading edge of dance music globally. These have been receiving rave reviews across the Blogosphere, play on BBC, XFM, Sirius and numerous other internet and FM stations, as well as reviews in high profile magazines like DJMAG.

Epiphany

Melech Miguel-Kayodeye Collins, using the stage name Melekú, has been burning red hot, igniting flames in the hearts of listeners. A voice of the younger generation of Jamaica, reggae and dancehall respectively, he enlightens the youth across the island. A cry of freedom, one symbolic to that of his father’s without a doubt . As stated by the singer, “Staying true to yourself is key”.

Born March 21, 1997, Melekú was frequently exposed to music from a tender age. Living in a household with his father, popular artiste Sizzla, it was here he recalls his first encounters. At the time though, it was said that ‘Young Kalonji’ cared very little for deejaying, as sports took up all his interest. His transformation soon caught everyone by surprise, when he started going to his cousin’s and father’s studio. Both him and his cousin Big 12, just on the brink of leaving high school, saw this as a means forward and started recording professionally. His first single, ‘Right Place’ was born and released in August of 2015, garnering moderate attention for the young prodigy. 

Three years later, they both collaborated again with the amateur project ‘For Namesake’. This nine track EP with its smooth slick delivery, introduced the new sounds of young Collins. The project proved little to moderate success but turned the heads of many, even his father’s. Seeing the potential of his son, Sizzla brought young Collins on the road as an opening act and mid-show surprise. A year later, both Collins’ landed themselves on compilation project, ‘Life Of A Ghetto Youth: Chapter 2’. The album charted on the Billboard Reggae Charts, peaking at position number 4. The young singer contributed to three tracks; ’Top Story’ being the most widely acclaimed of all. Other tracks like  ‘How Great Is This Moment’ and a feature on ‘Our Life’, alongside the likes of Anthony B, Pressure and Marlon Asher; also held weight amongst some of reggae’s finest.

A new star was on the horizon but one not new to fame or spotlight. Early summer of 2019, he released ’Gyal Criminal’, which saw Melekú dabble in the dancehall arena. 

Today, he continues to ignite our hearts with tunes of joy. The message of freedom, free-will and consciousness can be felt through his songs. The stage is set; the world is eager and Melekú is ready.
