It is a good book if you have not read other books on Patton.  It left a lot out on the full story of Patton.  Several other books I have read on Patton provided this story and a lot more.

Cole has written a provocative book, one that examines the increasing divide between the Holocaust--the factual event--and the "Holocaust"--our received notion of the event. He points to (among other subjects) "Schindler's List," "The Diary of Anne Frank," and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum as evidence that the "Holocaust" is arguably more real to us than the Holocaust itself.
Cole rightly criticizes the (peculiarly American?) need to find a redemptive message, a clear-cut universal lesson somewhere in the Holocaust, a need that ultimately trivializes it and strips it of moral complexity. For example, Anne Frank's diary was originally published stripped of her references to growing sexual awareness or any bitterness harbored against the Germans. The first play about her life downplayed her Jewishness and stressed her universal message that "in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."
While Cole's arguments are insightful, his writing--repetitive at times--makes for labored reading. Annoying, for example, is his liberal use of quotation marks, needless in many cases, to assign some special meaning to a term, as in the following:
"While the process of 'Americanizing' the 'Holocaust' does involve ... stressing the role of the American 'bystander,' 'liberator' and 'survivor,' 'Americanization' also involves a certain distancing of 'self'....
I question the difference between "Americanizing" the "Holocaust" and Americanizing it.
Annoying too are the punctuation errors and subject-verb disagreements that pop up with dismaying regularity.
Despite this, Cole's ideas are well-formed, if a bit heavy-handed, and this book makes for important and interesting reading.

This book is the single most important book for understanding the narrative of the 3rd and 4th Centuries. It is an epitome (summary) by a Byzantine monk from the 12th Century using a number of older sources. If you've ever read Cassius Dio then you've read at least part of Zonarus. Most of Dio is missing so they just fill in the gaps with fragments from Zonarus and a couple other epitomizers. The first thing that you'll notice about this book is that it doesn't include all of Zonarus. Since there are 18 books of his history it can't be that surprising that it can't all be stuffed in one volume. What this book does contain is (most of) books 12 and 13 which picks up after Alexander Severus (235 AD) and ends after Theodosius (395 AD). The sources that Zonarus abbreviated for his other volumes are mostly still intact. This is the only section where his sources are unknown and cannot be attributed to another author.
The translation is pretty good. Considering that this is the first time Zonarus has been translated into English it makes sense that the author would go for accuracy over style which makes the book rather hard to read. Another annoying thing is that all the footnotes are placed at the end of each chapter. While opinion is divided on whether footnotes should go at the bottom of the page or all together at the end I consider it essential for original sources at least to have the footnotes at the bottom. These footnotes inform the reader of the other information available on events and the accuracy of the author. It is very important that you read the footnotes thoroughly. This makes it extremely irritating to keep having to flip between the front and back of the book. This is an unfortunate error given the otherwise excellent quality of the book. Considering the rarity of the subject matter it is absolutely worth getting your hands on if you have any interest in the period.

Don’t be intimidated by the somewhat obtuse, academic title of Guy Beiner’s book nor by the hundreds of footnotes it contains. While this book is likely a great resource for scholars, it is very well written and easily read by the layman. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the history of the 1798 Irish Rebellion, especially in Ulster.
Beiner takes a bottoms-up approach, relying on a vast array of sources to uncover the extensive oral and written accounts of the rebellion and its aftermath that apparently still survive. He calls his approach “vernacular historiography”. It’s vernacular because it is constructed using mostly local sources, including stories, poems, songs, antiquarian accounts, even novels written by local authors in the 19th century. It’s historiography because it traces the “history of the history”; that is, how the 1798 rebellion was regarded after the fact by the different communities in Ulster and how their respective views evolved over time depending on prevailing political circumstances. The Presbyterians, who led the rebellion in Ulster and who accounted for the vast majority of its participants, chose not to remember their role as their political position with respect to the union with Britain subsequently reversed itself. The Catholics, who played a relatively minor role in Ulster in 1798, appropriated the history for the broader Gaelic nationalist movement that developed in the late 19th century. Later still, Ulster Presbyterians re-remembered their history, no longer embarrassed by it. In the process, they disputed the nationalist interpretation. As Guy Beiner documents, the competition for the memories of 1798 continues even today, more than two hundred years later!
It’s notable that the author of this impressive book is Israeli. He treats the different traditions, communities and political positions in N. Ireland with commendable impartiality, a feat reflective of the fact that he is free of emotional investment in the history, something he acknowledged in an interview with a reviewer that I found on the internet.

Munslow's _Narrative and History_ is a competent survey of the postmodern approach to history. His main argument is: "the basic assumption behind this book is that history is a form of narrative written by historians." Among the characteristics Munslow associated with postmodernism and the related category, poststructuralism ("a central pivot of postmodern analysis") are relativism, skepticism about how we know anything, and "history that acknowledges its fictive nature," an argument that non-postmodernists will find hard to agree with. The book is littered with technical terms, and although these are defined in a glossary, the very definitions are also technical, causing the reader to look at other definitions in order to understand virtually any one of them; yet the cross-referencing is so circular that it is difficult for the reader to avoid bewilderment.
Nevertheless, Munslow's main arguments are relatively clear. These included never taking "any evidence at face value," thus requiring postmodernists to step "outside our beliefs, ideologies, arguments, emplotments, theories and authorial decisions." This, of course, is not entirely possible; some degree of subjectivity is inevitable. As to truth in history, Munslow wrote that "instead of regarding attested evidence as akin to truth," we must regard it as merely providing a basis "for the possibility of truth." To summarize a lengthy discussion of historical truth, Munslow's argument was that because of "competing narratives" and different "points of view," there can be no single historical truth but only " `historical truths'." These are points that many historians who don't regard themselves as postmodernists can agree with.
Regarding Munslow's principal argument, embedded in his title, he quotes philosopher Louis Mink that narrative for historians is not "a merely literary grace" but "a primary cognitive instrument." The historian "generates meaning as she or he narrates the-past-as-history." The past "once was, is no more and has gone for good. History, on the other hand, is a corpus of narrative discourses about the once reality of the past produced and fashioned by historians," Munslow stated. This point is related to what has been said above about history and fiction. Munslow did clarify this by writing "histories cannot have fictional statements that are unconnected to evidenced past reality." But, in Munslow's sense of postmodern history, "by fictive is meant a discourse that is imaginatively created (as opposed to being an empirical reconstruction). . . . [I]t is imaginatively―fictively―constructed."
Despite the relative clarity of many of the quotations above from Munslow's book, it is not easy reading. Nevertheless, as a survey of postmodern beliefs about history, it is a useful source.
