This is a morbid and gruesome fantasy about the brutal killing of a man who bears a striking resemblance to rape-joke-making pranny lad Dapper Laughs with a shuddering backing from Perc that sits with his more noisy interests on Perc Trax subsidiary label Submit. Says John Doran of getting Ali Wells involved:

"Given the punishing nature of the text I aimed about as high as I could and luckily for me, Mr Ali ‘Perc’ Wells, agreed to the commission - which came with the simple instructions: "Make this story very tense via nefarious sonic means." And the track he turned in really ratchets up the revulsion and clammy panic to horrific levels. I love this track but I don’t think it’s going to be cropping up in anyone’s Fabric Live or Boiler Room set any time soon. However I’m getting a 24 bit WAV out to Jamie xx as we speak, so fingers crossed."

'The Guardian' is out now on the Hubris compilation, available in all good record shops.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th November) In Hour 2 we welcome Prequel Tapes celebrating the release of his album 'Inner Systems' on the R'COUP'D label run by Fin Greenall from Fink. We hear a track from the album alongside music from the Robert Logan, Shed, Autechre, Clock DVA and SCNTST. He told us;
"I think all music leads us back to our first influences, unwittingly or not. Early experiences are deeply connected with certain moods and feelings - I can’t help feeling that they deepen as we age. Reflections are important. Mirorring the past with the present and being curious of the result when they are put together in a mix. To me it is not important the when, what, how a piece of music was created or released. I am interested in the strength of a composition. How long can it last, how often can it grab your attention. Thank you."

It is still only a couple of years since Moire first emerged, but already he operates in his own distinctive sound world. It is a place his broken house and techno is murky and disorientating, ambiguous and otherworldly. So far it has come on cult labels like Spectral Sound, Ninja Tune and Actress’ Work Discs in the form of some essential EPs and an LP, and now he steps up to our mix series ahead of the arrival of his second full length on Ghostly International. 

Over the course of an hour the Londoner lays down some loose and hazy house that gets more and more rugged as the grooves unfold. It’s lo-fi but stirringly emotive stuff that ends in a place of refracted melodies and heavenly vocals that really lift you out of the real world.

Since the turn of the millennium, UK artist Alistair Wells has been putting out a tough and abrasive brand of experimental techno that cannot fail to arrest your attention. Always skewing existing ideas into his own new—often brutalist—ways of thinking, his output has seen him become an in demand live act and DJ who plays across three decks all over the world. He does so under the alias Perc, mostly on his own label Perc Trax, and at the same time he has also brought on a number of likeminded artists from Ansome to Manni Dee. His own catalogue boasts albums like Wicker & Steel and The Power And The Glory, and these have rightfully won him deserved time in the limelight. That fact proves that although Wells has been around for years, he is as vital now as ever. 

As such he brings something new to our mix series across an hour of lively selections. Very quickly settling into a high tempo, high impact groove, there are maximalist techno cuts, passages of angst ridden noise and thumping bangers all bolted together into something uncompromisingly physical and in your face. Franky, it’s a vital visceral offering that would work at any point in the past, present or future of techno.

This week's episode of Newtype Rhythms (presented by https://soundcloud.com/inverted-audio) features an emphasis on getting your head and heart enveloped by rave. When we wondered who could bring such intensity and thoughtfulness into a guest mix, we only had one person in mind, the London-via-Doncaster debonair https://soundcloud.com/melladeemusic. With the debut release off his imprint (aptly named Warehouse Music) coming out this past Friday on physical (and being released on May 5th digitally) - we asked him to bring a set that would endear and engage listeners simultaneously, and presumably get them running to the nearest warehouse party as soon as humanly possible. 

Reckon that'll take some time, as we here at Newtype Rhythms prefer to party in space colonies. Sheepshead starts things off for the first 41 minutes, and Mella Dee goes from there to the end.

Newtype Rhythms #11 - Special Guest: Mella Dee

Hi friends ~ Neverwhere Radio is back this month with some dark, left-field club techno mixes from myself and one of Italy's finest vinyl selectors, the always stunning DJ Red. She is best known for her long-time residency at the legendary Goa Club in Rome, regularly hosting DJs like Ben Klock, Marcell Dettmann and Carl Craig, as well as her releases on Ellen Allien's 'Bpitch Control' and Speedy J's 'Electric Deluxe'. Her most recent production was on Wolfskull Records and featured a great remix from the minimal master himself, Ricardo Villalobos.
