Acclaimed Jazz Beat producer FloFilz teams up with experimental Hip-Hop/Jazz quartet Bokoya for collabo album ‘Yurika’ on Melting Pot Music. Double single ‘Reaching Out / Stalagtight’ is the fourth taster.

What happens when a four-headed human drum computer meets a classically trained violinist turned beatmaker to spend time in the studio? A beautiful lily blossom. At least this was the case when Bokoya and FloFilz entered Atelier 21 in Aachen (a Produzentengalerie für globale Kunst) for a musical encounter with no goals set. The music that was born out of these sessions is simply amazing and we are more than happy to release them as an album under the name ‘Yurika’ - Japanese for „beautiful lily“.

‘Yurika’ will be available digital and on LP with artwork by Jens Roth & Jeremias Diekmann. The 19-track strong instrumental album includes one vocal track featuring Japanese singer Kano San. Prior to the album drop in December, we will release five digital singles.

FloFilz is one of Europe's most acclaimed Jazz Beat producers with four albums on MPM under his belt (and close to 300 million streams). His last album ‘Close Distance’ came out in 2022 and featured artists Alfa Mist, Blue Lab Beats, Jerome Thomas, and Summers Sons. FloFilz is a classically trained musician who not only plays the TR 404 but also violin. 

Bokoya describe themselves as a four-headed human drum machine that play improvised beat music. You can call it jazz if you like (all four members are graduated jazz musicians) but be ready to stumble over some Dilla, Kraut Rock, Ambient or Dub in the mix. In 2022 Bokoya released their second album ‘Hausensession’ on MPM, followed by a collabo album with Cologne-based producer Gianni Brezzo (Jakarta Records) called ‘Minari’.

The first full-length from Mr. Lif & Akrobatik (The Perceptionists) in a dozen years reflects the struggles and near-death sagas that struck them. During that span, Lif miraculously survived his tour bus plummeting over a 38 foot cliff. Akrobatik weathered a sudden aortic rupture and emergency open-heart surgery. The impact of those experiences forced the former Def Jux duo to contemplate fate, luck, and their own place within a world spinning out of control. 

But their ability to survive has allowed them to thrive. They’ve harnessed a radiant hard-won optimism that refuses to flinch from the evils of existence. From the album’s first track, “Early Mourning,” Akrobatik asserts that courage comes from within, but reflects on the millions of young black men sent to premature graves. He considers whether gang affiliation is inherent in their souls, or more likely, whether things would be different if these neighborhoods were well lit and effectively policed. 

If turmoil and inequity currently wrack the globe at record levels, Lif’s verses seem more prophetic than ever. His verses offer searing indictments of corporate and political corruption: corporations oppressing local farms, governmental duplicity in dealing with big pharmaceutical companies, and the crooked brutality of cops who get away with shooting unarmed black men. 

On “Hose Down,” the pair brilliantly intersperse news reports from the MLK-led Birmingham protests of 1963 with the internecine problems of the present—where a traffic stop can still lead to a funeral. It’s as poignant of a polemic as you’ll find, but blended with a danceable Caribbean lilt. 

With the Perceptionists, the personal is political and vice-versa. Akrobatik rhymes about his “desire to breathe in the sun before my skin dries out” but still refuses to be “the coward in a pretend hide out.” On “Lemme Find Out,” they kick ingeniously sinister dystopian horror raps about our grotesque addiction to technology. There are love songs over beats that sound like they could’ve been on Madvillainy, stories of cypher demolitions of would-be challengers, and dirty ass rhymes over dirty ass drums—as The Perceptionists sagely insist, that’s all the world really wants. 

It’s music from deep in the trenches, songs that confront the blitzkrieg of bad news but offer light at the end of the bombardment. If you listen closely, you can intuit a profound story of friendship and camaraderie between Lif and Akrobatik—lifelong friends trading bars with the chemistry of Tip and Phife, Andre and Big Boi, Erick and Parrish. They’re mortal men who made mistakes, gained experience, and obtained wisdom. This is Resolution.

Plush Seats. Recline for a minute, spark a spliff, and savor the cozy luxury. Enjoy the foggy velvet majesty summoned by the new beat tape from the LA-by-way of Oregon singer, rapper, and producer known as Calvin Valentine. 

In theory, these are merely instrumentals, but each is a self-contained narcotic universe. Novel strains invented from the finest hybrids of past and present. The genre tag on your iTunes reads “Bong Rips,” and conceivably, this is the chill soundtrack to the weed dispensary in your heart, mind, and favorite herbal habitat. You can detect the DNA of past originators, J Dilla and Madlib, Kanye West and The Heatmakerz, but it's more than just tapping into the best of this millennium. Valentine drills into the atavistic soul that made their beats so cold. A brilliant new recipe for donuts, another panacea to be hawked at the medicine show. 

Making his Mello Music debut, Plush Seats heralds Valentine’s arrival as one of the most formidable and versatile producers of his generation. Of course, this isn’t his first rodeo. By his mid-20s, the precocious producer had already racked up a resume that could pass any certification exam, featuring collaborations with De La Soul, Nas, Bun B, Boogie, Juicy J, Illa J, Planet Asia, Fat Tony, and Devin The Dude. 

Plush Seats follows Home, a gorgeous record that Valentine produced entirely for Illa J (brother of the late immortal, James Yancey), which Fader hailed as “a moving testimonial to the family and the power of community.” His previous album was Eugene, a full-length gumbo of celestial R&B, pop, and hip-hop that would you leave you rightfully believing that Valentine grew up eating Coney dogs in Detroit, rather than the bucolic countryside of Eugene, Oregon. 

XXL raved about its trippy psychedelia. Uproxx called it the “smooth groove that your summer needs.” Okayplayer said that with Calvin Valentine, “the future of music is in good hands.” With Plush Seats, the future is now. It’s a work of supreme virtuosity, a stoned immaculate saga ideal for blunt cruises, impromptu cyphers, and meditative late night head nods. 

It always starts with the drums. Valentine picked up the instrument at age 6 and the heartbeat is a constant oxygen-rich throb throughout the album. He creates his own pockets with the feel of an instinctive and intuitive musician. A song like the “Plush Intro” could be a sequel to “Dipset Anthem,” with concussive drums, filthy scratches and keys that conjure a conspiratorial mood. “76” reminds you of classic Wu-Tang, in which the RZA reanimated the ghosts from classic Stax Records, full of insistent and stabbing horn sections spitting out a warped extraterrestrial soul. Muscle Shoals on steroids. 

If Donuts was the White Album of beat tapes, a cut like “Vanilla” uses it as ground zero for curious and funky explorations. “Another World” sounds like a burner the Hitmen would’ve made for The Lox in ‘98. “Starr” could be the theme for a sitcom on 2032 Alpha Centauri. On “Ras Trent,” “PCH,” and “Tabernacle,” you can hear the littoral reggae slink of The Gladiators, Dennis Brown, and Gregory Isaacs, chopped up and reimagined with fluorescent futuristic tones. 

While “Mazel Tov” offers up a toast buoyed by old early 60s soul pre-Age and the synthesizers that sound dreamy and warm—an unrecognizable oldies anthem from a jukebox that only existed in a solitary dive bar in Conant Gardens. As the song fades out, a clip chimes in, “I’ve said unabashedly that a lot of the good ideas I‘ve had in my life, I owe to pot.” 

Plush Seats is nothing but strong ideas and a smooth ride. Grimy but opulent. Smoked out but clear-headed. A vibe like no other.

This jazz training pianist is incredibly versatile and has been producing soulful sounds for the last two decades in the east coast (U.S.A) underground scene.

He signed exclusively with the London label @emceerecordings specialized in drum & bass & Jungle music, that's why you will very rarely see releases from him on other labels/collective except for a few like @Darkerthanwax & @treehouse-vibes etc..

The NYC-CA connection of Milano Constantine & Body Bag Ben deliver that raw, hardbody hip-hop on their new collaborative album, 'Write It In Blood.' The 11 tracks on here were created out of a shared passion not just for the culture, but for creating art as a duo. After working together on Milano’s collab EP with Planet Asia, they both knew they had more to offer as a unit.

While the process of making this album during the pandemic wasn’t easy, it went as smoothly as they could have hoped. “This year’s been tough for everyone and to be honest this project was built so organically that it sounds like we recorded it together in a studio,” BBB says of working on separate coasts. “We definitely played off each other’s energy. He would send his verses, I would send him mine, and it just worked out perfectly.”
 
That energy is certainly palpable throughout every element of 'Write It In Blood,' a project that demonstrates their gifts as multi-talented artists. They both rap on every track, and handled all of the production as well. Body Bag Ben produced a majority of the beats—”Hell or High Water” is his favorite of the bunch—but Milano got to showcase his talents behind the boards, too. He crafted the chilling beat on the snarling title track featuring Planet Asia, as well as the more soulful “Sparks Steak House.” 

It’s only fitting, then, that Milano holds his and Body’s performances on the album in such high regard. “I want the masses to walk through this musical art gallery of emotions and leave saying they witnessed legends like Rembrandt and Basquiat,” he explains. His cohort agrees, adding that he hopes listeners “break their neck rockin’ to these joints!” With such a high level of production and writing on this album, it’s safe to say they’ll both get their wish. 

'Write It In Blood' drops Tuesday, Dec. 29 through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms and is available now for pre-order via iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp. Be on the lookout for even more from these two in 2021 as they both have several projects in the pipeline.
