expectations set at younger ages only lay the foundation for disappointment

i could never know what they meant
when precedents are set so early on
you find yourself chasing expectations you’d never expect to be met
but nonetheless keep racing forward till you hit a wall
and that’s the problem with growth
you thought it would be linear
like no way i’d be back to days where i thought i was inferior
to everyone around me even friends and maybe family
faces covered masquerading love to hide the scrutiny
triggers set to spark a mutiny my common sense abandons ship
when i’m confronted with any sort of lack of clarity

and can recognize that i’m projecting when i think that people hate me
