techno melodic

Beginning with the title selection Wielki crafts a spirited progressive techno hybrid. Anchored by a punchy groove, charged rhythms and devilish effects, it's both foreboding and mysterious from the outset. Evolving smoothly, astral arps and warm chord changes create a contrary yet compelling narrative leading in the main break. Choir-like pads initiate the centrepiece, sending it further into cosmic territory with tastefully tense modulation and a deadly drop which spearheads a chugging finale.

The companion piece ‘Minuit Une' sits as a perfect complement with its dynamic dance floor appeal. It's deliberate beats & subterranean groove set the foundation for percussive rides & squelchy synth splashes. Rising modulation peaks anticipation leading into the break, where wonky arps melt down to tonal tension & buzzing sonics as groove drops for spirited conclusion.
 
The lone interpretation of ‘Maelström' is provided by Binaryh who also make their label debut. The Brazilian duo found success early on in their career with a string of releases on Steyoyoke's ‘Black' division, before later finding a home on Black Rose, Timeless Moment and Sprout. Now regularly appearing in the sets of trendsetting DJs such as Tale of Us, Adriatique, Fideles, Fur Coat, Nicole Moudaber and Kevin de Vries; Binaryh debuts on Astral with a gorgeous rendition of ‘Maelström'.

PREMIERE: Midnight Behaviour - Elysium (Original Mix) [sequence Music]

We are very happy with our first premiere of 2022. This time we partnered up with Rotterdam based label Infinite Depth. The first EP of 2022 comes from the new duo Ten Systems. 

The final track of the EP called ‘Compass’ represents the darker part. It has some very tight drums and percussion, accompanied by spooky vocal one-shots. Together with the perpetual elements, the tension is kept very high. Every time this tension works towards a heavy and intriguing sawing synth. After the final hit of this synth a danceable clap comes in, creating an uplifting end to this great EP.

Afterlife Recordings proudly presents ‘Nude’, the debut album of Swiss duo Adriatique. It’s Adrian Shala and Adrian Schweizer’s most personal artistic statement yet, a collection of songs, capturing their feelings and memories.
The two Adrians’ close friendship and complementary skill sets have helped develop Adriatique into one of the most esteemed acts on the house and techno circuit. Their releases since 2011 have come through leading labels such as Diynamic, Cityfox and their own imprint, Siamese. They signed to Afterlife early in 2018 with the club-ready single ‘Ray’. ‘Nude’ is the most diverse and adventurous record in the catalogs of both artist and label. It switches between slick, downtempo electronica and driving club fare without breaking stride. Afforded the freedom that comes with a full-length album, we hear another side of Adriatique.

Swedish artists, Whirl, returns to Steyoyoke Black to take part in the project Steyoyoke Black Reconstructed – a chance for our artists to remix two older tracks in the catalogue. The first remix of Nick Devon’s ‘Sithian’, is a dynamic piece, complementing the intensity of the original with additional melodic elements that open up the soundscape to make for a vibrant, compelling track. ‘Maze’ on the other hand, a remix of the original by Lost Soul, takes us to a darker space with a deep, echoing melody and a refrain that is pared back to its essential parts.

Whirl does a great job of showing their versatility across only two tracks, making this skillful EP an impressive success.
