My Summer Mixtape is one of those 'does what it says on the tin' releases. A collection of summer tunes from the Balearic Maestro and Melodica label boss Chris Coco.

Chris has carefully selected some choice music to take on his summer jaunts round Europe and, happily, decided to share his selection with us.

So there are tunes from DJ mates like the original Cafe Del Mar legend Jose Padilla, current Savannah resident Pete Gooding and Singita Beach Bar resident Glass Coffee; tunes from stellar producer mates Satin Jackets and Gelka; a fine solo acoustic version of Chris's own song Holiday plus a whole load of other COOL, Balearic, mellow, sunset momentS.

For more than one and a half decades, ten studio albums so far and countless 12 inches and remixes, Jean F. Cochois a.k.a. The Timewriter, has established himself as one of the most internationally respected writer/producers of his musical genre and considered one of the founding members of the Tech House movement.

We've super excited to be welcoming The Timewriter to Melodica Recordings for an exclusive three track digital EP. The tracks that we have lined up showcase an eclectic production style that's all his own. 'Give It Back' is a sumptuously textured house track, with a thumnping kick and restrained vocal samples bathed in rich reverb and noisey splices. 

Next up we have the title track. 'Epicly Strong At Heart' is an emotive piece that plays on shifting Broken Beat patterns, muted organs and melodic chimes. To complete the package, we have 'Paul The Ponderer', a track that sits comfortably between the armchair and the dancefloor. Spooky synths undulate throughout creating dissonant tones and moments of gentle harmony.

Epicly Strong At Heart will be available in all good digital stores from October.

As an interlude between Haraket's forthcoming EP and their last, we've pulled in some favours for an exclusive little remix package featuring moody dancefloor renditions of 'Attgo' & 'Taint'. This is one for those twilight basement parties. 

Up first we've got the ▲n†ikuȝ vs CLNBRK 'Chapter & Verse' Remix of 'Attgo', a cryptic slo-mo techno offering from the meplus1 head honcho (Antikue) and his mysterious counterpart CLNBRK, showcasing the darker, undertones of the original. Aus Music's Cottam delivers a suitable bumpy house edit of 'Taint', making sure the vocal's sit true and the warm acid bass bounds underneath for maximum dance-floor leverage. 

Youandewan, whose recent releases on Hypercolour and Secretsundaze have rocketed him into much deserved wider recognition, completes the package. His version leans on warm dusty drum samples to create the elastic groove, with repeated melodic phrases and bass accents that enchant throughout. Unlike the previous remixes, the vocals arrive heavily processed, creating an ethereal vibe.

Melodica is back with fresh new talent, this time introducing an album from the duo Lazy Left. Originally from Ukraine and Armenia, two electronic instrumentalists Alexander Leu and Yuri Topolyan met in Sri Lanka, where they decided to base their name on their favorite surf spot in the south of the island 'Lazy Left'. The guys are experimenting between styles of Nu-Disco, Deep-House and Balearic. Their rich, warm and deep music, is inspired by the light of the sun and the sound of the sea waves, following the sunset rays, into the boundless ocean of space...

The nine track album entitled 'Nice & Slow' is a guitar-focused-dubbed-out-bliss. Their distinct sound is embedded within each track, identified through the psychedelic spaciousness and laid back vibe.

Tracks such as 'Moonrise', 'Crazy Swell' and 'Everything At Once' showcase a real downtempo dessert mood, with layered delayed guitar riffs and deep luscious pads that shimmer around the atmospheres created in these instrumental journeys.

The duo have also collaborated with vocalists on the album, including  Alya Garcia (Freedome Of Choice), Maria Zdrok (Mikyway) and on the title track Nice & Slow which incorporates heavy chugging bass lines, driving drums and Yana Karol's backing vocals.

There are a few notable upbeat tracks such as 'Good Story' that has a bouncy beat and vocals that burst through the echoing ambiance. However, the most club ready, catchy track that could be found on a late night dance floor is 'Friend' The thick modulating 90's era bass line drives this track forward alongside the simple but effective vocal hook.

Swedish duo Dagfest is made up of Mats Lundgren and Patrico Cabezas.  The Dagfest project is what happens when a techno producer and a vinyl addicted record shop worker get together and make music. It’s sample-tastic, meaty, beaty balearic, disco tinged loveliness. The duos energy lies in pushing to open up the cosmos of dance music. Soulful most of the times when not being acid or deep. Here at Melodica a big summer record is usually part of the agenda and for 2015 “I’ve Got the Feeling” is that record.


The track itself samples an unreleased 70s track by James Walsh’s band Gypsy. The sample provides the catch vocal hook.  The original - As the Sound Injections blog put it – sounds like  ”Tropical dance infused groovy illusion that paints images of umbrella cocktails and golden sand beaches with wet bodies grooving inside an undiscovered heaven! On the remix duty first up is UK based Tikenots who turns in a jazzy, scat-flavoured house rerub with barrels of energy. Next its off to Italy where DJ Rocca lays on the octaving analog bassline with aplomb.  His disco house remix with stabby organ and piano is a perfect uptempo moment to round off this prime-time summer EP.


Dagfest - I Got The Feeling (DJ Rocca Remix) [CLIP]

Daniele Baldelli is one of the few DJs who can claim to be one of the founders of the eclectic Balearic sound. Take a trip back to the 70s and 80s in Northern Italy and you will find Daniele Baldelli mixing up electronic, African and slo-mo disco records to co-create the Electronica Meccanica sub genre. Records often would be played at the wrong or variable speed to be made to fit into a wide aural tapestry of his unexpected-but-seamlessly-flowing DJ sets. For this release Daniele pairs up with fellow Italian DJ Rocca to serve up an eclectic - electronic - Balearic track, "Thylacine".

This remix is a serene affair with Spanish producer Manuel Costela giving us an early-evening Balearic flavoured journey.  Some layered guitar and a well placed key change make this the perfect play for that sunset performance.

Coming off the back of the success from Chris Coco's last album - Freedom Street, 'Word' was the obvious choice for a brilliant single with some even more enticing remixes.

To kick things off you are met by the genius and groove that is Leftside Wobble, creating a deep and heartfelt house remix; you are carried along with the old school vibe we all remember so vividly.  

The Timewriter enhances on the back room meets old school atmoshpere with this gracefully disonant remix. Playing on the big room pads; the once dominant vocal takes a comfortable back seat as the mix floats through you.  

DFRNT do exactly as the name suggests and really flip the mix on its head, this amazing remixes calls on the edgy dub bass line is hinted in the original mix but takes full force from it instead. A darker twist on the jazzy original.

The Afterlife remix is that rythmatically driven, melodic roller you know is possible from the original, the track boasts a lounge house feel but with constant push you would expect of a balearic hit. 

Word (The Timewriter Live Mix)

Introducing Haraket, a 5 piece from South London who are set to release their debut 12" / digital single on Melodic Recordings this Spring. The band emerged from the creative chaos of school and college bands in and around Peckham that have already given the world King Krule. This is the first in a series of releases with Melodica Recordings. 

Haraket fuse wall-of-sound dynamics with often delicate source material, moody electronics, programmed beats and effected vocal lines. Think a post dubstep version of early Underworld or A Certain Ratio reinvented by the new digital century. 'Taint' / 'Attgo' showcases the young band's keen ear for contrast, sensuous tonal material and high drama, something that is reflected ten-fold in their live shows. To accompany the two original tracks the band have commissioned three remixes from the likes of Djrum,  BBC 'Sound Of 2013' nominee King Krule with Jamie Isaac, and Mokadem.

'Taint' is a slow-building, intricate guitar track built around the vocal tones of Abigail Hardiman, sounding mostly live for the first part before subtle electronics begin to permeate the surface. The arrangement is crisp, nodding to the clean percussive tones of Foals, before an all-out cymbal smashing crescendo ensues and the sultry tones are thrown into waves of cacophonous delays.

'Attgo' shows the band's brooding melancholic side, with all source material heavily augmented with digital processes and effects. The vocals of Ogul-can Genc are short and barely recognisable, acting like breathy musical punctuation.  The off kilter synth lines and percussion throughout hint at the cavernous dread of early 2005 dubstep, pairing it with banks of crushed guitars and live drums.

Djrum follows on from his accomplished work on 2nd Drop records with a captivating take on 'Taint',  morphing it into something of a polar opposite. It's moody and dark, sounding like the soundtrack of a film Noir with Hardiman's vocals appearing in a new, smoky light.

Local boy and man of the moment King Krule teams up with Jamie Isaac to roll things right down for a dubby downtempo
refix. By leaving out the guitars, introducing some strings and reeling out the dub FX, they've created a perfect little sun-drenched oddity. 

For digital buyers only, we have a remix from London-based artist Mokadem. Her twlight house hybrid is the perfect dancefloor antidote. Bold bass, smart effects and a super tight arrangement make this version absolutely killer.

'Night Bus' is a new eleven track compilation by Melodica Recordings. Pulling in the work of a localised group of young producers from South London, this collection is the beginning of a series or releases from the label that focuses on specific neighbourhoods in London and beyond. Here's what the label has to say about it:   

'First, the simple answer - It’s an electronic music soundtrack that works rather well on that long, late night journey on the night bus. It’s atmospheric, ethereal, ambient, modern music with just enough drive to get you home. It’s music to help you stare out of the window and notice the little details that make the ride kind of special. It’s music to take you there and help you feel like you are somewhere else.

Then, the more complicated one - ‘Night Bus’ is a collection of music made by a new generation of South-London based producers who work around the disadvantages of the current economic climate, resorting to computer programs and midi keyboards to create their musical exodus; who have grown up in the metropolis plugged into music on their mobiles, listening to Dubstep and Hip Hop and auto tune pop and the sound of the city itself; who have filtered all this through their software to nurture and create a new sound, a new feeling, a new C21 ambient that, sometimes unconsciously, draws on the spirit of the classic artists to create a new style. Everyone from Erik Satie to Brian Eno to Tangerine Dream to Burial is hidden in there somewhere. ‘Night Bus’ is steeped in history but it has a sound that is all its own, and now it’s becoming a genre in its own right.'
