Melody As Truth is proud to announce “Melodies In The Sand”, a collection of works from Czech artists Irena and Vojtěch Havlovi.

The husband-and-wife duo began working together in the mid 80’s as part of experimental ensemble Capella Antiqua e Moderna, a unique association of musicians whose repertoire spanned various styles of European classical music.

With an inventive and unorthodox approach to both historical and modern compositional techniques and interpretive procedures, the Havel’s have steadfastly developed a unique and musically autonomous language which continues to expand to this day.

Spanning their early work in Capella Antique e Moderna to recent pieces recorded for Viola De Gamba, ‘Melodies In The Sand’ is presented to the listener with the simple aim of shining a light on these incredible musicians. Their work has within it the ability to penetrate and enrich the innermost corners of a perceptive human soul, a gift which they share with sincerity and humbleness.

About You is a set of hazy-haloed pop songs crackling with the flutters of fresh love amidst a mind full of memory flashes. Written in the whirlwind of a hopeful affair, instantly transformed into long distance romance, it’s a head rush of affection with the universe bending blurrily around it — an archive of yearning from a year that rifted warm bodies adrift; an outline of the in-betweens, the familiar and foreign, hopeful promise and heartbreak.

Recorded in Amsterdam over the course of May 2016, “What You Get For Being Young” offers a full immersion into Kraft’s ever-evolving world. Lush, digital manipulated synths spread across cold surfaces, metallic drums dance around skeletal song structures. Whilst echoes of “Talk From Home” remain, they are but faint echoes, as Kraft’s recent exploration into sound-design and digital manipulation confidently posits “What You Get For Being Young” as an entirely new chapter in the artist’s growing narrative.

Some 18 months on from the release of his acclaimed Exit Strategies 12”, Jonny Nash returns with Eden, a mini-album recorded in Bali and the United Kingdom throughout 2016. While many of his aural trademarks are present - think glistening guitars, drifting synthesizer chords and subtle piano motifs - Eden feels a little different: humid, dense and decidely "murkier" than previous outings. Check, for example, the gently pulsing rhythms, layered vocal samples and hazy ambient house era textures of "Maroon Crisp", or the sparkling melodies, chiming percussion and bubbly drum machine matters of "Ding Repair"; both tracks are as beautiful and life-affirming as you'd expect, but feel far more widescreen in vision. Eden is full of these kind of moments. There's the undulating mysticism of "Conversations With Mike", the delay-laden, outer-space ambience of "Down At Babakan", and the crystal clear brilliance of closer "Lime".

Tourist Kid's "Crude Tracer" – their first release on Melody As Truth – was recorded in Perth and Melbourne between 2016 and 2017. Though the idea of movement between two places could be a somewhat romantic afterthought, a more palpable sense of dislocated unease creeps up on the listener throughout the album.

On "Discourse II", stutters of digital trash segue seamlessly into a plateau of serene, glassy ambience – and on "Bacterial", the hiss and sting of rehashed foley seems to dance around a plaintive, oh-so delicate piano solo. These striking contrasts are deftly managed, playing upon notions of digital noise and ambient, while never feeling weighed down by the limits of reference or gesture. Indeed, numerous touchstones to Tourist Kid's earlier work – and to that of contemporaries – are synthesised and expanded upon to great detail and atmosphere. "Crude Tracer" sits in its own adeptly nuanced and assured space.

Tourist Kid's production encompasses all manner of tangible and otherworldly sounds as a vehicle to explore something far more intriguing than a simple instrumental fetish – so much so that the overwhelming sting of blasted detritus or a broken and bent vocal is capable of eliciting such delicate impulses as glistening, heart-wrenching piano chords. It's a unique – and very special – kind of beauty that Tourist Kid gracefully achieves with "Crude Tracer”.

In 2017, musicians and regular collaborators Gigi Masin and Jonny Nash were invited to a residency at artist Xavier Veilhan’s “Studio Venezia” at the Venice Biennale. For this immersive installation, Veilhan trans- formed the French Pavilion into a fully functioning recording studio, inviting artists to record original works during a series of residencies. Masin and Nash recorded a series of improvised compositions primarily for piano and guitar. Situated in a unique acoustic environment and recorded with a variety of microphone techniques, the recordings directly capture Masin and Nash’s unique musical relationship and understanding.

In 2018 Nash was approached by London-based design and branding consultancy Commission Studios with the proposal to collaborate on the production of a vinyl LP. After discussion with Masin, Nash suggest- ed the Venice recordings as the basis for this collaboration. After editing the recordings down to a total of 6 pieces, collectively entitled “Postcards From Nowhere”, Commission developed the art direction of the project. This involved working in close collaboration with Paris based print atelier Imprimerie du Marais, renowned experts in colour setting, gilding and embossing techniques.

The vinyl edition features a multi-layer embossed outer sleeve with hot foil print on the spine and fluorescent interior print. The inner sleeve is blind-embossed on cotton paper. Additionally the record ships in a custom black mailer made from recycled coffee cups.

The vinyl edition is limited to 500 copies, 300 of which will be available commercially. It will be available to purchase via the Melody As Truth Bandcamp page from June 17th.

Butterfly's Tale

MATstudio is a new series focussing on the music being made by Jonny Nash and Diego Herrera (Suzanne Kraft) in their Amsterdam Studio.

MAT records always aim to encapsulate a particular sound palette or sonic “world”. Whilst the mini-album/EP format is often ideal for this, it is important for us to balance these more measured, conceptual works with the spirit of chaos and spontaneity which often inhabits our studio. MATstudio provides us with an outlet for this aspect of our work.

The format, a vinyl record with two long-form compositions, allows us to showcase the range of material produced as a result of Nash and Herrera’s improvisations, experiments and accidents. Many of the fragments are the results of filtering ideas through new production techniques and tools. Some feature friends and collaborators. MATstudio works are an ode to the infinite possibilities that result in keeping a curious mind and a desire to learn.

MAT-SS3 features two compositions, “Crushing Indifference” and “An Inn For Those Not Permitted” and it will be released on vinyl and digitally in late February 2020.

The single comes with an exclusive bonus digital track, "Processing The Negative", which will not appear on the full album.

“A Heart So White” represents a continuation of the working philosophy adopted during the recording of their debut; immersion in an unfamiliar recording environment with a limited set of tools and the goal of exploring the possibilities that lie within these limitations.

The album was written and recorded in the Willem Twee Concertzaal, a converted synagogue in Den Bosch, Holland. Whilst “Passive Agressive” explored virtual instruments and environments, “A Heart So White” shifts the focus to acoustic instrumentation, breath, air and physical space. Using the hall’s mechanical drawer organ and Steinway piano, the pair craft a delicately balanced suite of compositions, stripping things back to reveal the bare essence of their shared musical language.

Recorded over the course of March 2020 in Bandung and Amsterdam, ‘Poe’ is a collaboration between Jonny Nash and Teguh Permana, a renowned player of the Tarawangsa, a two-stringed instrument used in the sacred Tarawangsa music of Sunda, Indonesia.

Poe’, meaning ‘Days’ in Sundanese, is a meditation on death and rebirth as reflected in the passing of time and the changing of the seasons.
