The title of this movement was inspired by the Native American dreamcatcher, an object that originated in the Ojibwe and Chippewa cultures. The native word used for this object is actually the inanimate form of the word ‘spider’, inanimate here being an additional inflectional category when expressing person or gender combinations in language (i.e. proximate/obviate, singular/plural, animate/inanimate).
The function of the dreamcatcher bears a remarkable semblance to the Lilith amulet. One of its uses is to protect the sleeper, over which it hangs, from nightmares and demons. Furthermore, it also aids in transfering good dreams, which are caught in the many web-like threads of the object and moved down through the beads and feathers that hang from the central hoop.  The nightmares are said to pass through the gaps and holes in the web, as though fading away through a window.  As a way of making a connection between the dreamcatcher and the amulets of Lilith, I designed this movement as an extended variation of the main theme from ‘Lilith’.

How to Grow Your Own Glacier

About the Ash Lad is inspired by a Dano-Norwegian folktale collection by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe that was published in 1859. It is said that Henrik Ibsen, author of the original Peer Gynt drama, was inspired by this collection of folk tales of which the story “About Ash Lad , Who Stole the Troll’s Silver Ducks, Coverlet, and Golden Harp” (some other titles it is known by include “Boots and the Troll”), is a part of. In this piece, the unfolding of the story in the form of a suite is also inspired by the famous Grieg setting of Peer Gynt, as we follow the hero along his journey, through perils and triumphs.

About the Ash Lad

Gestumblindi was a character in Norse mythology, best known for an
exquisite contest of wisdom that took place between himself (though Odin
was in fact disguised as him) and King Heidrek. Gestumblindi presented a
series of riddles which, due to their ingenuity, eventually exposed him as
Odin. The idea of creating a piece for a solo melodic instrument inspired by
a riddle was a notion I was immediately drawn to. While there are
many riddles to take inspiration from in the Gestumblindi-Heidrek
exchange, the second last in the series evoked the most interesting visuals for
me, as this was the first I'd ever heard of Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir.
