About 700 years before Christ’s birth, the prophet Isaiah wrote, “The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon Me, / Because Jehovah has anointed Me / To bring good news to the afflicted; / He has sent Me to bind up the wounds of the brokenhearted, / To proclaim liberty to the captives, / And the opening of the eyes to those who are bound” (Isaiah 61:1).

This prophecy was fulfilled centuries later in Nazareth of Galilee in ancient Israel. One Sabbath day, the Lord Jesus entered the local synagogue and was handed the scroll of Isaiah’s writings. He opened to 61:1-2, read it aloud, and told those in attendance, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:16-21).

This announcement was the proclaiming of the jubilee, which, in Old Testament times, occurred every fiftieth year. In the Old Testament jubilee, slaves were released from bondage, and each family’s allotted portion of the good land was restored to them. The year of jubilee in the Old Testament is a picture of the entire New Testament age, the age of grace, when God’s salvation is freely available to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ!

The one making the announcement was anointed by God. An anointed person is one who is chosen and sent to accomplish a certain task. The literal meaning of the word Christ is “the anointed One.”

Jesus Christ was anointed by God not only to accomplish redemption for us but also to carry out the wonderful commission in Isaiah 61:1-2. He takes away our sins, but He also releases us from the bondage of sin by giving us His life, heals our broken hearts, and opens our eyes, which were blinded by Satan’s deception, to see the wonderful truth in God’s Word!

If you haven’t yet received the jubilee proclaimed by the Lord Jesus, you can do so by praying this simple prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I believe in You. I confess that I am a sinner. Thank You for coming as the Christ to die for my sins and to proclaim the jubilee. Come into me to be my life. Release me from all the things that bind and afflict me. Open my eyes to see all that You have done for me.”

The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah Is upon Me (Isaiah 61:1)

Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

In reading this wonderful verse, it’s important to keep in mind—according to the context of the verse—what “good” refers to. It’s not the good of material or soulish blessings that we may want the Lord to give us; it’s the good of becoming full-grown sons of God.

It’s that we would be “conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the Firstborn among many brothers” (v. 29). God faithfully works all things, arranging our circumstances and environments, so that we would grow as believers unto full maturity, together expressing Christ on the earth as His Body.

This process isn’t always comfortable. But if our vision is clear, we can bridge the disconnect between what we naturally think of as “good” and the good of the fulfillment of God’s purpose.

Then, we can speak to the Lord in the words of this song our resolution: “I choose to remain under Your dispensing.”

We choose to remain, to abide, in the Lord and in His love (John 15:4-5, 9). We choose to contact God in His Word, day by day. We choose to open to the Lord’s supply of Himself as grace and to live in His presence.

If we open to Him, trusting in His loving heart toward us, He will grow in us gradually, little by little, bringing us on to maturity as full-grown sons of God.

We’ve all done it—something bad happens, and our first reaction is to say, “Oh no!” But what if we replaced “Oh no!” with “O Lord!”?

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with saying “Oh no!” But when we call “O Lord,” something takes place within us that will never happen with any other exclamation—we contact the Lord Jesus in our spirit and experience Him in the midst of whatever we’re going through.

When we first believed in the Lord Jesus, we were saved in a once-for-all way; now, we can never be condemned by God. But the Lord also wants to save us in a daily way, and we can begin to experience this kind of salvation just by learning to call on His name.

Romans 10:12-13 says, “The same Lord is Lord of all and rich to all who call upon Him; for whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” The apostle Paul, who wrote these verses in Romans, passed through many hardships—for example, he was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, and imprisoned.

While in prison, he wrote, “I know that for me this will turn out to salvation through your petition and the bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:19). Paul was confident that his terrible situation would turn out to salvation because the believers were praying and because he was contacting the Lord.

Hallelujah, we can be saved in any situation by calling on the Lord!
