Heralding her forthcoming album ‘Reflections’ on BBE Music, harp player and composer Alina Bzhezhinska (aka AlinaHipHarp) presents ‘Soul Vibrations’, the first single taken from the project.

Alongside her HipHarpCollective, Alina Bzhezhinska creates a unique sound on the harp with layered effects and electronics, combining original works and covers to pay homage to some of jazz, funk and hip-hop’s greatest innovators.

Album ‘Reflections’ features a blend of original compositions and covers of works by some of Bzhezhinska’s greatest influences, including ‘Soul’ Vibrations’, originally record by the pioneering composer and harpist Dorothy Ashby.

“This iconic tune captured my imagination when I first listened to her album, Afro-Harping” says Alina. “I decided to make my own version of this tune by writing an arrangement that represents vibrating strings of the heart. I open the album with Soul Vibrations, as I wanted to show my deepest respect to my role model.”

Album ‘Reflections’ will be released in September 2022, on vinyl, CD and digital formats.

Brownswood Recordings and The Steve Reid Foundation celebrate the life and spirit of one of the world’s greatest jazz drummers – Steve Reid – via a deluxe 12” featuring a brand new interpretation of the classic ‘Lions Of Judah’ by emanative & Ahmed Abdullah backed with a Four Tet re-edit. 

Steve Reid was an amazing drummer with a long and illustrious history that stretched from working with James Brown, Miles Davis and Fela Kuti through to his own Steve Reid Trio and more recently working with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet). He died from throat cancer in the US in April 2010 without the money for treatment that could have saved his life. 

The Steve Reid Foundation was established by Gilles Peterson in memory of his friend. The aims of the foundation are to fundraise on behalf of struggling musicians in need of help and support. All profits from the sale of the ‘Lions Of Judah’ 12” will go to the foundation.

Remastered from the original master tapes that were preserved for more than 40 years in almost perfect shape, ZOO FOLLE is a highly sought after psych-funk album, a true masterpiece for all breaks-beat lovers, full of rhythmic percussion, acid flute, synth work, dark electronics, drum machines, and crazy hand-claps. The score was composed for an Italian TV movie in 1974, directed by Riccardo Fellini (brother of the most well-known Federico), and originally released on Ricordi Label in the same year. Featuring Edda Dell’Orso and some of the best and leading Italian session players in the soundtrack and library landscape, such as Maurizio Majorana and Antonello Vannucchi (from I MARC 4), Nino Rapicavoli on flute, and Giuliano Sorgini himself on organ, keyboards, piano, drums, and percussion

Greece's premier downtempo and lounge label Melting Records is branching out into like-minded genres with a new series titled MRSPECIAL. The releases in this series are indeed special, featuring a focus on a different style of music each time. This inaugural issue – Humble Dubbers – tackles the intertwining worlds old-school dub, roots, and reggae steppers, as seen through the Melting Records looking glass. Veteran dubwise producers and irie new names rub shoulders on the compilation's ten tracks, coming together to give the listener a mind-expanding journey along a space-echoed pathway. 

Included, for the first time on vinyl, is "Nine Years" from Ticklah, a renowned producer who worked on Easy Star All-Stars' classic The Dub Side of the Moon. Easy Star All-Stars are also represented by bassist Victor Rice, contributing with a heavy dub track. Canada's Dubmatix took some time out from his packed touring and production schedule to deliver an exclusive rolling and blunted-out track for the compilation. And longtime German dub stalwart Burnt Friedman along with The Nu Dub Players provides a sparse and dreamy offering track that opens the collection with style. 

Other artists featured on Humble Dubbers are Kabanjak (one half of Ancient Astronauts), YesKing (BBE Records), Shimi Sonic from Israel, Skinshape from Horus Records, Lo End Dub from Spain, Colman Brothers from UK, and up-and-comers Resonators (Wah Wah 45s). With this variety of producers it is striking how cohesive Humble Dubbers remains, giving the listener a satisfying overview on the state of nu-dub. The compilation also fits mightily within Melting Records' catalog, as lounge and downtempo elements are sprinkled throughout for a distinctive take on the sound. In all, Humble Dubbers vibrates and fascinates, from its rumbling low ended basslines to the crisp sizzle of flying hi-hats. Selectah, bring the rewind!

Robert Charlebois’ musical world is an incredible source of treasures, in several genres, throughout the course of a career that has reached the half-century mark. Any good vinyl hunter on the planet knows the value and importance of Charlebois. His name is circulating among record collectors, and his music jumps from generation to generation, country to country, in the most natural way. Let us state the obvious: the raw energy found in his music has not been altered in the slightest by the passage of time.

Music lovers under 40 have discovered Charlebois by going through their parents’ vinyl collections. Used LPs, scratched and dusty, holding true gems that begged to come out and play. Back then, Charlebois was bringing a new sound to Quebec, an evolution, but he also introduced a look, an influential style.

Until now, Robert Charlebois’ oeuvre had never been the subject of a rereading/remixing project. This year, his 50th anniversary in show business, provided a good opportunity to invite a new generation of musicians to dig deeper into the grooves Charlebois has laid down. Though the techniques and instruments used to write and treat music have changed, the goal remains the same: to surprise, to develop new ideas, to push back the limits of form and content, to broaden the sound spectrum.

The idea of a remix album came from Montreal-based musician/producer/artistic director/DJ Poirier. The project eventually got set in motion, and Poirier took its helm as artistic director and executive producer. He also applied his magic to a handful of tracks. The concept was to sample Charlebois’ songs directly, without access to their individual tracks – to draw from the raw material and go straight to the heart of the matter. The results: fat dirty funk, round beats, and psychedelic flights seen under a new light. The sunnier side of Charlebois’ music is also represented along the way through nods to Latin, reggae, and calypso music.
