I love post punk, I love shoegaze, I love dreamy, atmospheric shit. So when my brother introduced me to Drab Majesty, I was head over heels for the album Modern Mirror. So much that I HAD to sample A Dialogue.

What does -phagia mean? The combining form -phagia is used like a suffix meaning “eating” or “devouring” the thing specified by the first part of the word. It is used in some scientific and other technical terms, especially in biology.

I wrote this because I heard a twitter mutual in the Twitter Spaces say they had Fae/Faer pronouns while I was listening to Cost Contra freestyles. Suddenly the bar "Fuckin' on a Fae/Faer on a couch from Wayfair" popped into my brain and I wrote this.

Suburban Malaise

s/o to Atlas for the original song. I did this version in like 3 hours. I also wrote my own verse.  I basically covered it because it resonated with how I've been feeling. I've been unemployed for 6 months, I've been suffering health issues and one of my friends passed away this week. So, I'm not doing too well.

Keeping in mind with the spiritual references that Judee tends to use in a lot of her music, and something she said about this song in particular that I sampled, I decide to make reference to The Book of Matthew 18:21-22 

The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant:

When I finished it, I was mostly thinking of when Judee said "one day when I was depressed, you know when you’re real depressed and you see everything comes to nothing, well, I thought, maybe I ought to take a different approach, and write a song that, instead of directed at people, would somehow musically induce God into giving us all a break, cause I was getting a little fed up by this point. So I put some combinations of notes in there that I worked on a long time hoping it would work… since that time I’ve decided that I shouldn’t get any more breaks, cause I already squandered them in weird places."

Which made me wonder if perhaps she imagined sinning and asking for forgiveness 490 times and figured she was on sin 491 and believed that was it for her.

Judee Sill struggled with addiction through much of her life and died of a drug overdose in 1979. Rest In Peace, Judee... I hope you've been enjoying peace and freedom from pain knowing that your work has not been forgotten.

I promised myself, and a friend of mine, I'd finally make a beat that sampled some Jazz. Prior to this, I had never sampled/chopped up Jazz music.  With a bunch of samples to choose from, I wanted to go for a less obvious choice despite all instincts directing me to sample Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts' Cowboy Bebop jazz numbers. 

Instead, I went for a sample from a band that went for a more nocturnal vibe. Particularly an album that someone I know had introduced me to in passing a long time ago. I remember he said "this album will make you wanna crawl in a hole and die."

Instead, I found myself lulled to sleep by it's dark, haunting, tones. I found it to be appealing because it stood out of the realm of what Jazz normally sounded like. Sure, it got dark, but it wasn't THAT dark. In an instant, I found myself daydreaming about a night in a city I've never been in, envisioning a noir film that hadn't been made yet...

I'd say this is the first time I've ever truly made a love song. Just so happens it's the first song I've ever made with a partner and the first time I've ever collaborated with my girlfriend @bmo_dreams. Bonding over the fact that we both make music; her being a chiptune artist and me being a hip-hop & electronic/industrial artist. I asked her about possibly making some loops for me. She sent me an old tune she made and let me chop it up and I quickly went to work.

At first it was a challenge. I had NEVER worked with her style of music before... but I kept trying, giving it space and time when I needed to clear my head. At one point, I found some old breakbeats my friend in Sapporo, Japan gave me about 20 years ago and used it. Just so happened that this was the thing I needed to get the gears turning. I found myself quickly writing lyrics before I even finished the instrumental and recording vocals shortly after. The whole thing resulted in a sound that joyfully reminds me of Ruby Haunt's "Sanctuary", Pizzicato Five's "Baby Love Child", George Clanton's "Make It Forever" and "Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods.  An Indie-Pop, chiptune, alternative song that feels hopeful and tender.

I love when otherwise jovial/sunny/upbeat artists make sad songs. There's something humanizing about seeing this other side to a person. It makes you appreciate their brighter aspects even more over time. This song has been on my mind since the early 2000s when I saw it on Vimeo. Filmed by Jake Lodwick, it was a video of Reggie Watts recording loops with a Line 6 loop machine pedal. I imagine this was improvisational like his other performances. However, this one struck a chord with me so hard that I felt the need to record a version of my own. 

One day, things were hitting me with a certain sadness that had me recalling those days of watching the original video. It was enough that in spite of less than ideal recording conditions, I put together this version you hear now. I spent some time with transcribing the lyrics as best as I could. Laid down drums, bass and then recorded vocals with the intention of leaning HARD into the scuffed quality of them. Using noise reduction, EQ, compression and reverb... I let the ugliness take a different shape despite it not being my usual standard for recording. 

With my mouth close to the mic, I intended to be as desperate as I felt when I heard the original.

I started to date a rat girl. At some point I started developing a stronger affinity for cheese. I'm bathing myself much more frequently and even my BEATS have become rat coded.

While I don't seem to be changing into a rat girl myself. Still remaining a human as I type this journal entry... I feel a deeper longing for my girlfriend... a devotion to her... and a devotion to the cheese. 

Rat Bite Fever (Devotion To The Cheese)

I heard about Claud on accident a few years back. I remember hearing the single for "Guard Down" and thinking "Hey, that's pretty good. I should sample this."

My first idea was to do an NY Drill remix of it, thinking that because they were from New York, it would be kinda funny. Problem was, I never had the motivation and never got around to it. Later on I end up finding out that Claud... is not from New York. They're from Highland Park, IL. 


Realising I had no meme-like idea to pin this to, I just decided to do it in the style that I've enjoyed making. With the intention of possibly writing to it... giving it the intentional theme of Claud's voice being like my nervous system telling me "Don't Let Your Guard Down". The idea being the feeling of anxiousness with new love created by past relationships... and eventually learning to be vulnerable with my new love as it ends with "Let Your Guard Down".

Either way, this was fun to make, and I'm basically considering it done so I don't overthink it into mush. 

If Claud happens upon this: Hey. Thanks for being a musician. I thought the song was dope and I hope you enjoyed my little sample flip piece right here.

If you're wondering about the title: I wanted to reference "Guard Down" in a way that amused me... also I play a lot of fighting games, so I felt like an arrow for "crouch guarding" using your Super Monster era colour scheme would be a nice touch.

Cursed Verse

I went to the museum and heard a really cool recording of Tuareg traditional folk music dedicated to the camels that the Tuareg people would perform. As a matter of instinct as a beatmaker, I had to sample it. So I recorded that sample, took it home, and eventually made this beat.

I would personally love it if I could get Q-Tip, Open Mike Eagle, and Phonte on this beat. Particularly Q-Tip because this feels the most like a Tribe Called Quest, honestly.

Instinctive Travels

It's halloween. I don't really care much for the holiday, but I felt compelled to make a beat after talking to my GF @bmo_dreams about us watching Hellsing sometime. Felt good flipping this sample for the Oldtakus and Oldtakus at heart.

Energy Vampire

Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze Arc was SO GOOD and the soundtrack was amazing. I got to see it with @bmo_dreams a while ago and we were both so enamored with the soundtrack. At some point I got the itch to sample it.

I don't sample Fear & Hunger in this one, but Fear & Hunger inspired it. I thought about the queasy, sick, feeling of being in those dungeons. How awful it would have been to find the girl there. Like, that's OBVIOUSLY no place for a child... 

It also made me think of a moment where you actually use the bed in the save rooms. Like how the bed is supposed to be a peaceful place... but that peace is an illusion in the dungeons.

We Have Abydos At Home (Demo)

I have to admit, I'm the kind of weirdo that is pretty into "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream". Which feels extremely fitting thanks to the uprising of AI taking everything and making it garbage and untrustworthy. The short story, the game, the comic... Easily one of Harlan Elleson's most interesting short stories. 

I made this little piece with a few names in mind. "Weaponized Incompetence", "Brain Maggot" and a few other names that fell by the wayside... but "Mouth Wide Shut" as a reference to both IHNM&IMS and "Eyes Wide Shut" just made the most sense.

Mouth Wide Shut

I've been making beats for a pretty long time. However, 2025 has been the year I've taken everything I've learned and pushed myself to learn even more than that. 

Recently, I've been suffering a bit of a creative block. So, I went back to check on some old project files and happened upon a beat I made in 2022. When I intially made it, I was making loops by hand, cutting and arranging segments as if I were using ACID Pro back in the early 2000s. This led to a lot of imperfections and struggles. I was also arranging drums in FL Studio without truly knowing how to use the sequencer properly. Leading to misshapen, broken, patterns that I would struggle to hide. 

I also didn't know as much about mixing compared to what I know now. 

Armed with new knowledge, I reworked the samples a little, fixed the drum sequences and used my new knowledge and understanding to get the overall mix to sound more appealing. 

As far as the track itself:

最近、創作意欲が少し湧かなくなってしまったので、昔のプロジェクトファイルを見直していたところ、2022年に作ったビートを見つけました。最初は、まるで2000年代初頭のACID Proを使っているかのように、手作業でループを作り、セグメントをカットしてアレンジしていました。そのため、多くの不完全な部分や苦労がありました。また、シーケンサーの使い方をきちんと理解していないまま、FL Studioでドラムをアレンジしていました。そのため、歪んでしまったり、途切れたりしたパターンができてしまい、それを隠すのに苦労していました。

また、ミキシングについても、今ほど知識がありませんでした。

新しい知識を得て、サンプルを少し手直しし、ドラムシーケンスを修正し、新しい知識と理解を活かして、ミックス全体をより魅力的なものに仕上げました。

曲自体についてですが：

ポストパンク、シューゲイザー、そしてドリーミーで雰囲気のある音楽が大好きです。だから兄がDrab Majestyを紹介してくれた時、アルバム『Modern Mirror』に夢中になりました。あまりの面白さに「A Dialogue」をサンプリングしたくなるほどで​​した。
