This song is my ode to black women. It’s my ode to my mother. To my sister. To my aunties. To my late most wonderful grandmother who’s birthday we would have been celebrating today. Well, this may or may not have been her birthday, essentially she needed a passport to come here so my great grandfather not entirely remembering when she was born chose his favourite day of the year. March 6th. Ghana Independence Day. This day 61 years ago my people celebrated the end of colonial rule in the former Gold Coast. A rich history preludes colonial rule and a story I read a while back of a woman fighting tooth and nail to preserve this shook me and changed my perspective on the world. That of Nana Yaa Asantewaa, this song tells her story of leading the fight in The War of the Golden Stool. She was only beaten because of her kindness in offering safety to the British women and children. Her defeat, however, will never dampen her fight, her vigour, her vision. A fight she should have never had to fight (had the yt man stayed in his lane) but nonetheless she rose to the challenge whilst the men were not ready to defend the sacred Golden Stool from the greedy hands of Queen Victoria. I performed this song in 2016 at the Victoria and Albert Museum with @galdemzine and @ayy_g on the decks and joked that had Nana Yaa not fought that war that the Golden Stool would have probably been placed on display in that museum, the fact of the matter is it probably would have. This War may have meant the the Ashanti Kingdom was annexed to the British Empire (pricks!) but it meant the Golden Stool was preserved. I see the power of Nana Yaa Asantewaa in all my Ghanaian sisters. In all the black women and femmes around me. Forever fighting wars they shouldn’t have to but always rising to the challenge nonetheless less and facing all that life gives them with grace and unparalleled power. These are the women that raised me. The women that continue to teach me. The women that I know will always love me. This one is for you.
