This past February, MEMCO and WCBN organized a Black History Month Symposium featuring a panel of three prolific Detroit-based producers, DJs, and activists. During the conversation, each panelist used their own experience to contextualize the emergence of Detroit techno, the music’s DIY ethos, and the ways in which the music inspires their work today. Introductory comments by MEMCO co-president Jordan Stanton ('19-'20).

“Mad” Mike Banks
Mike Banks is a Detroit-based DJ, producer, and founding member of the Underground Resistance (UR). He currently lives in Detroit, Michigan and is a former studio musician, having played with Parliament/Funkadelic among others. He worked in the second half of the 1980s with the collective Members of the House, releasing several 12" singles. In the late '80s he and Jeff Mills formed UR as an uncompromising, independent outlet for music imbued with a critical edge and an often futurist outlook. Together with Mills, Banks built UR into an internationally recognized and respected name. He is also the owner of Submerge Distribution, an independent record label which distributes Detroit-based techno worldwide.

Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale
Stacey “Hotwaxx” is a DJ and producer who has been deeply embedded in Detroit’s dance scene since 1989. She was a mainstay on the radio stations in the mid to late 80s, including WLBS, WHYT, WDRQ and WJLB, and won the Motor City Mix contest 10k prize. Stacey has been featured on numerous Internet radio shows and is currently featured on www.deepspaceradio.com. She currently teaches and designs DJ & production classes with Spin Inc, Girls Rock Detroit (GRD) camp, Give A Beat, Seraphine Collective, and Detroit Students of the Arts (DSA). Hotwaxx also formed a live music group, Nyumba Muziki, which has performed at the Charles H Wright Museum of African American History, and for the Detroit 300 Conservancy.

Ron Johnson (DJ Jungle 313)
Ron is a native Detroit DJ and educator who recognized a vital need to fill the creative gaps left by the public-school system’s abandonment of an arts curricula. He is committed to empowering disadvantaged youth and at-risk communities with music that inspires. He is the executive director of Spin Inc, a 501(c)(3) organization providing DJ and Music production education for young adults in Detroit. He is also a core organizer of the annual Detroit Electronic Music Camp (DEMC) that takes place during Movement.

Michigan Electronic Music Collective

MEMCO is a group of DJs, producers, and event-goers that provides a platform for electronic music in the Ann Arbor area. Every month, MEMCO hosts “Impulse” parties at an Ann Arbor venue that feature student DJs and professional guests. Along with proceeds often being used for fundraising efforts for local organizations, Impulse parties provide a safe, inclusive space for attendees and performers to enjoy a range of electronic music.

MEMCO also runs ongoing DJ and music production workshops, empowering members to use club-standard equipment and industry-standard software. In these ways, MEMCO maintains its tradition of teaching and learning, building a warm community of DJs, producers, dancers, and friends in the Ann Arbor area.
